what ear protection?

Bama Drifter post #4 using Amazon Prime and got them today. These are nice and allow me to plug my tunes into them. :) Been saying for decades I was going to get electronic muffs. Cross that off the bucket list.

I have used the electronic muffs and like them, especially when instructing new shooters. They work fine with handguns and when shooting rifle I can move then around to work well with stock and prevent interference. Where I have had problems is when shooting shotgun, as I raise my gun and get my sight picture it sometimes bumps the stock as I can't tweak them like I did the rifle. What I am looking for and saw once but never again is a "band" type plugs like Hickok 45 uses but with an electronic ear bud on them instead of the foam plug. I would like to check them out.

I'm almost to the point where I use suppressors as my only protection ... but I use rubber plugs in addition if I'm shooting full power loads.
I like Silercerco and YHM ... but I've also done 2 of the Form1 DIY. I've got another DIY pending, its a Ti can for 223. Some aren't as pretty but they work almost as well (my DIY 9 is a good example) ... at a lot lower price point.

The top has my 9mm 2nd DIY can which also works well on my AR-57 ... the Ruger is wearing a YHM Mite and that day the M16 was topped with a 300BO upper and equipped with a YHM Phantom Ti 30 cal can ... all are shooting subs and I don't bother with any other protection. I've also got a Silercerco Octane 45 which can also handle the 300BO subs.

No suppressors in CA unfortunately. I worked a bit at a short range with my 22lr upper; I wouldn't trust consistently getting a good sight picture with my iron sights, but if I move the stock in toward the center of my chest and up I can acquire the red dot with reasonable ease. Not a problem with the soft recoil of a 5.56, but would be a great position with a larger caliber.

well I decided to go with the howard leights sport ear muffs. they appear to be very nice but my only gripe or concern is

1) when turned up I hear every little thing such as birds, cars, trains, probably even ants walking.

2) I can actually hear the gunshots. they aren't loud like It would be if I wasn't wearing anything but I can still hear it.

3) kind of a pain when shooting rifle but ill get used to it.

I've never use electronic muffs before so is it normal to be able to hear the gunshot? I would call it the equivalent of me standing 100yards away and someone shooting say a 30-06.

Have you never worn hearing protection before??

What hearing protection have you used that prevented you from even hearing the sound of a gun (unsuppressed, centerfire) you were firing?

There's nothing magic about electronic ear pro that makes them block sound a thousand times better than passive ear pro. If you are holding a gun that produces probably in the 140-165 dB range, you are going to hear it...ear pro or not.

compared to my regular ear muffs it was more noticeable.

when wearing my normal ear muffs the sound is very muffled. when wearing the electronic ones on a scale of 1-10 I would say the gunshot was about 5-6. with my non electronic ones I would say 4-5. with 10 being full blow shots without protection.

I'm not bashing them I was more wondering if this is normal. I should have noted that when I fire its about 4-5 like the normal muffs. when I was standing 5-10ft from my buddy and he fired his rifle the sound was a lot louder in the muffs. we compared both regular and electronic and both agreed that the regular ones offered more protection but the electronics still didn't bother my ears.

the only thing I really didn't care for was how it amplified the sound a lot. 2 guys were 100yards away shooting handgun while I was setting up and I had them on and it was like they were right next to me and it amplified their voices so much I could hear a normal conversation 100yards away. I thought it was pretty cool but got a little annoying after awhile.

What is the NRR of your regular earmuffs, what is the NRR of the electronics? Do they fit/seal to your head equally well, with your eye pro on?

Have you adjusted the volume? Over amplification of normal sounds should never be a problem because you can simply turn that down (or not turn it up to begin with).

for some reason i get a killer head ache when i wear ear plugs.

This might not benefit anyone else, but immediately after I put the ear plugs in and they have fully expanded/seated, I pinch my nose and blow moderately to prevent ear/headache. I can't even tell you why this works for me...I assume it has something to do with inner ear pressure, and perhaps equalizes inner ear pressure when the act of putting an expanding plug into an ear winds up increasing inner ear pressure?

Don't want to hear ants walking? Turn the volume down.

Hear more than with the muffs you're used to? The NRR on them isn't as high as the muff's you're used to probably.

Headache with plugs? Try different products. They're cheap and you can get variety packs to try from online suppliers. Well worth it to find out what is comfortable.

I cant get the foam ones to seal so got the green rubber ones and they give me a headache. I tried the ones that look like hearing aids and they give me a headache also. its like there is too much pressure or something.
