Im looking to make a a taticoooooll rifle that can still be used for real hd/shtf use. The budjet is about 1500-2000. Looking for a rifle, rails, optics, bu irons, & sling plus mags and a vest.

Before everyone starts screaming AR, I have an AK and a nice stash of ammo that Im comftorable with and the AKs ammo is pretty cheep.

So here is what Im looking for
1. the ability to mount a rail
2. ammo and mags be readly avaliable (ammo price is important, i dont want toe be acused of starvimg my childern )
3. be reliable

Also, if an AR happens to jump out at me, what twist rate is good for what gr. bullet weight.

If you want 7.62X39 than the XCR or a VEPR seem to speak out but if you already have an AK than what is the point? If you want something if 5.56 than I would wait for the SCAR light or ACR. Or you could save a little more for a STG 556 or FS 2000. All of them take standard AR mags except the STG.

If you don't want to spend the mulla on any of those than the Kel-Tec SU-16 is a viable option and you could get everything for around a grand or so. If I were in your shoes than I would wait for the ACR.

As far as your question
Also, if an AR happens to jump out at me, what twist rate is good for what gr. bullet weight.
Generally, old 5.56 barrels wre 1:12 twists (I think) designed for the 55g FMJ the military was shooting back in Nam. Now the standard SS109 62g projectile requires at least a 1:9 twist to stabilize correctly. If you want to shoot the really heavy stuff, 70+g would need a 1:7 twist.

A Sagia conversion would be nice with Kalinka (sp?) optics on a side rail. SKS builds are fun and can be loaded with stripper clips and detachable mags with the draw back of being heavy. I did mine just to not have an AK and be different. Tapco mags seem to be the only detachable ones that work reliably other than a few older ones that I had to grind on the followers to make feed 100%. Figure $250-400 for a decent rifle, $100 for the stock (ATI folding, Tapco T6, or Choate Drag.), $60 for three mags, $40 for Murray's spring firing pin, $ Iforgot for a Kivaari trigger job, $60-100 for a good drill and tap mount, $10 recoil buffer, and stock up on 7.62x39. Just save the original parts as non-Bubba'd SKSs are going up in value. I wouldn't have done mine up like I did if I didn't have another one in pristine condition as well as I saved all of the original parts.

Garand is a great choice!

((SinaguaShooter OK, I'm going to go waaaaaaay out on the limbs here and come up with a long-shot.

M1 Garand. OK OK stop laughing. No, really, stop laughing.

Here's the idea:
The .30-'06 Greek surplus is still plentiful and cheap. And it comes with built-in reusable clips ready to go! And it has great combat effectiveness as a SHTF round. Very few arguments against the .30-'06.

Now the tacticool part: you have 2 starting "platforms" that I know of offhand. First of all, the SAGE stock, which is extremely tacticool. You can hang all kinds of kit off of this collapsable Garand stock. The other starting option would be a synthetic stock for the Garand. Much cheaper, and still very black and very evil.
Now you need the part from Fulton Armory which replace the upper hand guard and allows you to forward mount your optics.

I wish I had the money to put one of these togeher myself. The SAGE stock website has some incredible pictures of this set-up. I'll try to get the link so you can see these.))

The Garand is a terrific idea. It's in my mind much better than an AR or Such clones.

It is, in my mind the perfect cartridge at the perfect price, and it is combat proven. if a GI can't break it, and a GI can kill the enemy with it, then that takes care of all my SHTF needs.

Best of luck and be sure to show us some pics when you make your choice.

since you have a 7.62x39 rifle, this may be a good choice.

Yugo SKS ;)

or maybe a Saiga with a 20'' barrel

get a 1/7 that way you can shoot all kind of bullets from 55gr and up

What to buy?

The .30-'06 Greek surplus is still plentiful and cheap.

That's a fact! It beats out the .308 right now for price. Don't know how long that will last though.

At least stick with .308. Ditch the AR-15 idea, cause you want a round that is effective with ONE shot. .223 is okay, but get lots of ammo for it and don't expect too much from the round. Yes, the AR is a cool gun everyone.

DSA FAL, PTR 91, or M1A. PTR is the best deal around for a brand new rifle and leaves $$$$ for $3.00 HK mags. You could find some FAL mags for OK deals also. Personally for the money, I think the PTR 91F is the best thing going. BUT the FAL is sweet too; just costs more.

OR get a long range rifle (Rem. 700 or Savage 110) in .300 Win Mag if you have cash left over.

Can somebody pinpoint me a website that sells tacticool accessories for the Garand ???

I think im going to make one.. looks toooo coool !!!

I didnt mention, I already have an SKS and its not really what Im looking for.

H20 Man, what is the rail package and butstock on the black AK, that is one of the "packages" that went though me head.

If you already have an AK that is reliable, you like, are comfortable with and shoot well, why not just get some synthetic railed forends, synthetic stock (collapsible or not depending on your preference), ergo grip, fwd pistol grip (if you like them), some more mags if needed, some quality HD ammo for it, and a good scope of your choice (Aimpoint, Eotech, etc). For $1500-2000 you could get everything you want, in good, quality stuff, and have a buttload of money left over for practice ammo, or whatever else you want it for.

I had my WASR all tacticooled out with stuff from Command Arms/TDI, and had a nice Bushnell red/green dot scope (which I love so much it's on my M4 now) and it was light, handy, comfortable, accurate and looked good. All the furniture, grips, scope, Surefire, etc only ran a few hundred bucks total.

*sigh*...

I really am old...

(somewhere Mr. Garand is rolling over in his grave...trade walnut for plastic?)

:(

I would suggest an AR-10, or better yet an LAR-8 (takes FAL mags, made by rock river arms). you already have a very capable close range assault rifle (AK), but the .308 round will allow you to have a lot of semi-auto firepower, as well as an excellent long range rifle, with fairly quick follow up shots.

the AR, modified direct impingment system is ,despite some rumors, reliable enough for the best equiped army in the world. it is also the most accurate semi-auto operating system in the world today. look at competition shooters, they have all but abandoned piston systems. it also has very good recoil impulses, with minimal muzzle rise as a result.

there ya go. a rail so you can slap on a bipod for long range stuff, or a flashlight for cqb. perfect for scope mounting. I would suggest a short 16-18" barrel, non-chome lined barrel for better accuracy.

Well.. I have already a good old classic Garand. I see no problem mounting a new one with a Hi tech stock full of Picatiny rails..

even more when I know that the transformation is completely reversible.

Im disapointed bcause I cannot find any shop that sells that model precisely.

Contact Josh or Andrew at Clyde Armory. They should be able to supply what you need. I don't know about import laws on this item though.

Tell them Kevin sent you - good luck.
