I bought a Glock 17 yesterday. The guy at the gun shop didn't really say anything about the different generations. He did show me a few 17s with different grips and told me to pick what grips I liked the best. I picked the gun that has little nobs on the sides. All the ones he showed me had finger groves. I am writing this from my phone when I get home tonight I can post a picture if that would help.

definitely a gen3, but its their rtf (rough texture frame). the new gen 4 has a similar texture to the gen3 rtf on the frame, but the rtf has the fish scale/half moon slide serrations while the gen 4 has straight vertical ones. Also, the gen4 has gen4 stamped on the slide after the 17. hope this helps and what a nice gun... considering buying a 19 myself!

Glock will refer to this as a Generation 3.5. It has been discontinued for a couple of reasons. However it's nothing tragic, I personally prefer this frame texture over the new Gen 4.
The RTF was designed as a test case for law enforcement. It came back to be too rough for daily carry against clothing and wore through it quickly. However, this is nothing that can't be overcome with a bit of sanding to knock off the sharp corners. If you look closely the "little knoby thingy's" are pyramid shaped with multiple sides. Taking down the points will really aid in comfort if you would like to do this.
The new Gen 4's do have several new features, the dual recoil spring, especially the .40 is an outstanding feature. The reversable mag release is now discontinued due to a large outcry from Law Enforcement and Military individuals... not to mention it's a HORRIBLE idea.
Enjoy your Gen 3.5!!! It's good gun by way of Glocks. Shoot the hell out of it and have a good time.

It's a 3rd generation Glock 17RTF2 with crecent slide serration.

The crecent slide serration has been discontinued on the RTF2 Glocks.

1st generation Glock has the non-RTF frame texture.
2nd generation Glock has the RTF1 frame texture.
3rd generation Glock has the RTF1 frame texture.
3rd generation Glock can be had with the RTF2 frame texture.
4th generation Glock has the RTF3 frame texture.

The RTF2 Glocks were created in response to LE request for a more aggressive frame texture for use in humid/wet enviroments.

SF, MB & RTF2 are all variations of the 3rd generation Glock frame.

Yes, that's what I call the cheese grater version.
After I got it home I got to thinking it may be alittle rough on the hands. I put 100 rounds through it this morning along with 300 rounds through my BuckMark. My hands feel fine. When shooting the Glock it feels like it is super glued to my hands. I love my new gun.
