I have been shooting a Norinco SKS for a couple of days with old wolf ammo and some old silver bear.. getting 4 moa sandbagged.

I can usually get 1.5 with bolt guns and AR's when sandbagged..
Is 4" at 100yds normal for an SKS? The search feature showed comparisons with a mini-14 or AK accuracy wise.

That doesn't sound bad to me. I've never shot my SKS's for accuracy but that is probably about right. It's never going to match up to the level of a bolt gun or an AR just beacuse of the way it'd designed.

4" sounds about right with irons and mil-surp ammo. It's also right inline with what an AK can do.

It is definitely possible to get slightly tighter groups, but 4" at 100 isn't anything to be embarrassed of with that rifle..

A shootin' buddy of mine has a couple Rusky SKS's, and with irons from a sandbag rest, we generally get half-dollar-sized groups from 50 yards out ( not counting that one flyer,LOL). His are the first ( and only) SKS's I've gotten to play with, and I've always been impressed with them ( though I don't dig the triggers too much.)

That's about right, some SKS's will get pretty good accuracy (2" @ 100yds) but remember these are combat weapons and 4" @ 100yds is good enough to shoot at the capitalist pigs. Also bear in mind the acceptable accuracy requirement for M4/M16 rifles is 3MOA. That in mind you can probably tighten up those groups by using newer/different ammo.

thanks gentlemen.. I really want to keep this rifle because of the caliber and it's kinda cool in a commie sort of way

I expected better groups after putting a cheap compact scope on. I took this in on trade with an after-market receiver cover rail. The cover is very tight but the scope is cheap junk.
With open irons I was doing a little worse, but my old eyes suck real bad :D

pops sks is a norinco. with surplus ammo off a rest at a hundred it does about 4".

with winchester fmj it shoots solidly inside 2" every time off a rest at a hundred yards, always struck me the ammo difference in that rifle. best i've ever done was about an inch and a quarter on a five shot group. one of the ones i'm most proud of. light recoiling pretty accurate rifle, pops sks is, trying to find a way to scope it for him relatively economically and accurately, he's still got a steady hand but his eyes are shot.

4 inch is a dead capitalist pig in the battlefield at 100 yds. Yes, that is pretty good group. If you have heavy barreled Yugo M 59 66 SKS, that be around 2 inch group at 100 yds sandbagged . I was using Yugo FMj surplus ammo .

Agree that it sounds about right. I typically got 4-5" groups consistently with my SKS, shooting off a bi-pod. A little larger spread when shooting off hand, but I could always hit a paper plate from the 100 yard line.

Better ammo, a good trigger job (Kivaari) and tech sights will shrink your groups noticeably. My Norinco had a chrome lined bore, which was excellent for wear and tear, but from what I read, not so great for accuracy. How does your bore look? If you have a sewer pipe, no trigger job in the world is going to help.

Sounds about right. The SKS's I've seen us usually do minute-of-softball at 100yds
minute of softball, good one ..

usaf vet asked what the bore is like, it's smooth and shiny.
I did notice the receiver slides forward and back when you push hard enough, gotta fix that. It came with an aftermarket plastic monte carlo style stock. Nice but the fit needs improving. (original stock is gone)

My SKS is an early Norinco(the ones made on Russian machinery). It has a great bore and an older Weaver steel tube 4x scope. It will do 1 1/2" with handloads and twice that with surplus. Silver Bear soft points also shoot pretty well at 2". I've taken a couple of deer with these.

mine is somewhere around 3.5 inches with brown bear ammo/wolf ammo. I did get 1.75 inches one time with federal ammo. I have not tried again as it is a hunting type rifle, not a target rifle. I have absolute trust in it out to about 175 yards, beyond that I need a solid rest, good ammo, and a fair amount of luck to guarantee a tight group. (got to love the old yugo sks. ugly as sin, but accurate, and reliable)

Yep 3" - 4" is about what I get, bench rested at 100 yards with both of my Russian SKS's. I use Wolf or other cheap Russian ammo. That is part of the issue. I believe a good SKS is capable of better accuracy with good ammo. They have a longer barrel than an AK, and the receiver doesn't flex either.

NOrinco SKSs are showing up again in the latest surplus rifle imports , that is a good thing. They looked beat up but for the price is hard to beat.

My scoped Norinco will do around 3" with the Russian steel cased, and under 2" with Remington or Federal. I have played around with some handloads and gotten close to 1.5". They are plenty accurate for their intended purpose, but are limited with cheap ammo and lousy triggers.

That sounds about right for an SKS without a trigger job. A good Kivaari trigger job will cut down your group size most likely. Some shoot quite well without a trigger fix but most get a lot of benefit from having the trigger set to where it should have been set at the factory. My Norinco did about 4" before the trigger job. Now it will do 2-3 inches at the same distance.
