What gun for an offshore boat?

The M1A gets my vote. A shotgun is a good backup but not for a main weapon. Along with a handgun for every member of the crew. Remember: drug dealers can afford the best.
Don't forget the AP ammo and tracers for the M1A.

No, Jaws was killed by an exploding O2 bottle. The Garand bullet caused the explosion, but the bottle was what went boom. Jaws 2 died from electrocution while Jaws 3 died from a grenade of some sort.

The Garand was employed against Jaws early on, but the bullet didn't kill it, and the rifle was short-stroking so Quint didn't get many rounds off. Quint, of course, was eaten by the shark, and Brody shoved the O2 tank into its mouth to keep from being eaten himself. Only during the Orca's sinking did Brody manage the shot, which was his last one of many, that detonated the tank and send the bloody corpse to the bottom of the sea.

Offshore Firepower

I like the Mossberg Mariner in 12 gauge. Has many uses!

I also like a trusty Marlin very well....and it would be formidable for your task at hand. .44 mag 10 shot....handy quick and a lot of wallup. (pic below)

I think if I suspected this kind of trouble I would not just have or choose one firearm. I would have a formidable carry piece, plus the above tucked away.

If I really expected trouble I woud probably have an AR type rifle in 5.56 or 7.62 stainless or not. I would just clean it after the outing. Mini 14 - 30 does not sound to bad. And maybe even take along my DPMS 308! hehe

Lots of choices for this application! The right one is the one you take with you regardless. And make sure each person has a life vest and weapon!

Quint, of course, was eaten by the shark, and Brody shoved the O2 tank into its mouth to keep from being eaten himself.

And, despite biting down on something made of steel, which would cause any other fish on earth to spit it out, luckily, Jaws decided to just hold the tank in his mouth, visible for Brody to shoot.

You need to keep in mind what tactics "pirates" might use. They are not going to start blazing away at 500 yards. They'll look like other fisherman and if they contact you by rdaio it will be under some other premise (swap beer, need a tool to make a repair, etc). 99.999999% of the time someone who approaches you on the high seas is not a bad guy.

A voice of reason. You can't just go shooting at every boat 500 metres away and they aren't going to tell you they are pirates, or start opening fire from a distance and risk wiping out what they are trying to capture. A 12 gauge shotgun is probably best, maybe an easily kept semi auto rifle, but all the talk of taking out pirates at 500 yards as soon as you see the jolly roger is silly talk and going to get you thrown in jail when you shoot up some pensioners on their vacation.

My Mini 30 has been a really good gun, although I'm a gun novice. I've had several mis-fires out of 300 rounds using only Wolf.

Would other Ruger M30 fans use a well-tested plastic Promag, or actually prefer a Mini 14 with hollow-points?

I think where he is there is more of a chance running into drug runners than pirates.

That's why I put pirates in parentheses. I was in the business of putting drug runners out of business for about 27 years. Drug runners don't really want to attract attention to themselves. Attacking a lone fisherman or even a bunch of guys on a boat doesn't do anything for them. They want to run their drugs. If they want to steal your boat that would make them pirates in my book.

As I said in my earlier post if someone wants to do you harm they'll more than likely approach your boat under some innocent pretext. A shotgun would be primary and other guns secondary.

You may want to check with your local W&F to see if there are any restrictions on what firearms and ammunition you can keep in a vessel. Its not uncommon for there to be regulations in place , especially during migratory fowl seasons.

edited for grammar.

I'm saying go with the patrol boat style turret mounted M60. Hell, maybe even a Mk19 for kicks and giggles.

Tricky question. Was on nat geo not to long ago most of the pirates were wielding the rifle of the free world ala AK-47. So if your engaging these pirates at distance I would take a more accurate rifle. Now before I get flamed: http://youtube.com/watch?v=G6BpI3xD6h0

Your next problem is going to be corrosion. If its a big problem I would probably have 3 guns min on the boat. 1 Long engagement rifle, 1 mid range engagement shotgun or compact rifle (probably a shotgun), and finally a pistol Glock .40 cal

any AK variant, and coat everything you can with duracoat for rust prevention.

Everything you can't paint, treat with a bake-in rust preventative, and then keep it slathered in CLP.
