First off, my father in law is a really cool guy and would never where that ridiculous uniform in Sarduy's first picture--even if it meant he got to shoot that weapon.

There's also no worries about being below deck as the boat in question is a center console with no cabin.

Realistically, a pump-action 12ga shotgun makes the most sense. A higher capacity Mossberg 500/590 (perhaps with the Marine-Coat (sp) finish) would be great. I know a guy who keeps one on his boat that travels around offshore islands near the Florida-area.

If you want to start supplementing that with toys, a decent caliber rifle would come next (something in 7.62/.308) but I don't see the scenarios for long-range engagement happening in most cases.

1. Distance. Good optics to see them first. If you see pirates get them before they GET to you or IN RANGE of you. They will have an assortment of probably full auto weapons and will quickly overpower you if allowed to board. So I think you need a .308, .338, or even a .50. Something semi-auto to put a lot of big lead in their direction.

2. You also need some heavy firepower for close up if/when they do board. An AK or AR should fill the role nicely.

3. Clean them daily.

Despite your preparations, I believe most intelligent pirates operate at night so you will likely not even get a chance to shoot them from a distance.

This is an interesting question. With a smallish boat and no cabin, you father in law has no place to hide from sight. Also storing a small armory is probably out of the question as well where you would have a choice of weapons based on circumstance.

Hence, long distance shooting is probably out of the question since the bad guys will likely have that option covered as well. I assume they want the boat and any valuables, not necessarily to kill outright.

Surprise is his alley and in which case I lean toward a pump shotgun and a handgun. Bigger boat= more guns. The guns are going get rusty more than likely, so I would just try to delay the process with regular cleaning. They will serve their purpose.

Another thing that he could do... get a faster engine. They can't raid a boat that they can't catch. Of course, he should still buy a weapon.

I ran gunboats (RAC's) in the USMC, and can tell you that even with a 240G or an M2, it's tough to hit accurately off of a rocking boat, or even one running "on step".

I'd recommend something that shoots a rifle round with some power, that may penetrate the bad guy's boat and/or fuel tanks. that means a 308 or 30-06, probably at least. 7.62x39 is a maybe.

I'd also pick something you can disassemble completely and drop in oil at the end of the day. let it soak for an hour, then go at it with a stiff brush to knock off any surface rust that may have accumulated.

I'd lock a pelican case to the running boards, using carbiners if possible. a plastic coated chain or steel cable might be a good second choice, stainless if possible.

my choice would be an M1 Garand, based on cost, ammo availability and performance (even AP rounds), ease of disassembly, availability of parts, and reliability of the weapon. no sense in having the world's best weapon turn into a single shot b/c the magazine turned into a hunk of rust.

after swimming with an M16A2, I can tell you salt water is tough on mags and any spot you can't reach with a cleaning brush and CLP

You have gotten a lot of good advice on weapons, so I will just comment on finishes. There is nothing better than Birdsong Black-T. I have a couple of guns that have been done by him and it is great stuff. Will not rust, and has a natural lubricity to it. If you don't believe my testimony to the product, ask the Navy Seals, it's what they use.

4 Months in the Bahamas, we brought Mini-30 with 200 rds ammo in a can,
Mossberg 500, 25rds 00 buck, 25 rds slug, Firestar .40 with 200rds, the mini had a scope, it wouldn't have been MOA or anything, but may have been able to rattle some rounds around in their Flybridge.

You cant go wrong with one of the chrome plated Yugo AK's and some decent oil/dry stowage.

Depending on the size and type of boat i would next think to a PKM clone with possable simple/removable pole mount at the bow or stern.

You guys have it all wrong, there is only one gun to consider for offshore use

Yeah, but it didn't work by itself. It was a binary weapon, serving only as the source for ignition. The other half of the weapon, an oxygen tank, is more difficult to deploy. It was shown that 30-06 itself was ineffective, leading to the destruction of the boat.

I'm not really sure what rifle I would reccomend, but I strongly disagree with using a shotgun as a primary weapon. Maybe a backup. If they are close enough for a shotgun to be effictive you are already screwed. The open water is the perfect place for long range weapons. Even if you are not making hits you are making it clear you will not be an easy target and they may decide to find easier pickings.

Doctor, heal thyself. It was a movie about a vindictive shark which chases a fishing boat. Nothing in it should be taken very seriously. My observation was tongue-in-cheek, there, tongue-in-cheek, as I imagine was the poster's use of the photograph.

Unless you really think I was trying to point out how one might deploy an O2 tank against a wicked giant great white shark.

lol you can't take a joke? lol....

Good G3 clone, it can be dripping oil and will still work fine. More importantly .308 or larger with a couple mags of armor piercing ammo. If you punch holes in their engines it'll be tough to catch you.
