What handgun if you were homeless?

Depends on how you define "concealable". You can hide a mighty big pistol under a trench coat or in a duffle bag. Quite frankly, I'd opt for a 20 X 20 Pedersoli Howdah Hunter. It would be as good as a sawed-off shotgun (essentially, it is!!!) without the legal problems a title 3 weapon has. A .600 round ball (perhaps with the addition of 3 .310 balls, to make a buck-and-ball load) would probably stop even the most drugged-out goblin in his tracks (assuming he didn't crap his pants and run at the sight of those short double barrels), and a shot load could take down pigeons (squab, anyone?) or squirrels for dinner.

If I had to pick a modern gun, it would be a toss-up between my Taurus 606CH .357 magnum, my Glock 19 9mm, or one of my 5-1/2" barrel .44-40 SAA clones. Why the "cowboy guns", you ask? Because (1), the .44-40 is still a viable defense cartridge, even 136 years after its introduction; (2) the SAA had a reputation for being able to "make it function" even with half of its parts missing or broken, and (3) I am more practiced with it than any of my other handguns, due to active participation in Cowboy Action Shooting (I handload and cast my own bullets, so ammo cost is negligible for practice).

a stick so I could fend people off and defend my cardboard box....

honestly probably a ruger, any double action in 357 will do.

Kinda silly question BUT if I had to I guess my NAA .22 --- very easy to hide , stainless, and VERY EASY TO HIDE !!!

Edit --- Food and shelter would not be as big a problem as self-defense --- the streets of any big city are scary if you are homeless and not a "thug/banger" ---- also a larger kitchen type knife as they don't cost much { $1 } and you can afford to lose them.

Your argument presumes the homeless person (recall my description of the "technically homeless" seasonal loggers in rural Maine) is desperately poor -- many are not -- and hungry -- which few or none are. "Feeding the homeless" is a particular favorite piece of liberal nonsense. The homeless don't need food. Would they propose relief to house the hungry?

The reason that the "technically homeless" are such isn't because they have no income or assets; it's because they are mobile, or drift from temporary job site to temporary job site, working under the table for cash, and have no credit for a house or even a decent apartment -- which they would then have to maintain at their expense while away for months at a time. It's easier for them to live out of cars, or even in abandoned cars, or squat in tent camps or even to work as caretakers, or to squat, in camps/seasonal homes. These homeless folks have guns, as well as other significant assets.

I encounter them in the woods from time to time, and in other places, and have even represented some -- not all as court-appointed counsel. I find them interesting, and their existence, their survival and their comparative success compels reconsideration of several general assumptions about homeless people -- as well as a couple of other things. One even showed me the way to something I had been looking for in the woods.

From your chance encounters in the Maine woods, a very extensive sampling of so-called "technically homeless" you make the specious and pretty absurd conclusion that homeless people really aren't, and hungry folks really aren't, because they're all simply between logging jobs and doing quite well, thank you.

Now, these are differentiated from the those poor folks in NYC who are just too crazy to see the benefit of making their way to your precious Maine woods, such a short way too, so that they can become "technically homeless" and live high on the hog, no longer in need of anything. Those are not homeless so long as they remain crazy.

And there we have the full accounting of all of those supposedly homeless people in every state in the nation - they aren't spread far and wide after all. They're all in the Maine woods or in New York City.

Did I understand you right, DOD? May I suggest that you go back to find that one character who was the "One even showed me the way to something I had been looking for in the woods" and hire him full time? No doubt he could help you find a horse's backside with both of your hands. :)

If I was in a city and had no home, and no job, I would want a stick. And a guitar, so I could go busking to make some money.

If I had a gun, I would hope that it was small enough to conceal and stainless steel. A 642 or 317 would be perfect, but not cheap, therefore would be tempting sell them. Beretta Bobcat would work, too. If I had a gun and no guitar, I would be more than tempted to trade for the guitar and a knife -- because, as I said, if I can find a good busking spot ... I don't have to violate any sensible laws to get money, even if I can't find a job for whatever reason.

A cheap knife, like a Victorinox paring knife, and maybe an SAK.

Survival stuff.

Gryffydd, I'd cast over an open fire in an old pot and use a big spoon for a ladle, same as they did "in the old days" (I have an excavated large spoon bowl that still has some once-melted lead in it, that was recovered with some field-cast Minie balls from Confederate lines at Port Hudson, LA, BTW) if it came to that, but my point was that I have practiced more with those particular guns due to lower ammunition costs, so I would be comfortable relying on them.

MSRP about $200

By the way, no hobo is going to attempt buying extra magazines. :)

If I were among the "typical" homeless, I'd sell whatever gun I had and buy some more Thunderbird, a great low-end, fortified wine.

It has a nice bouquet, 100% effective in the right quantities, and doesn't taste so bad coming back up.
That is, if I were "homeless" and had already secured my nightly abode under a nice, dry bridge.

Then even though I wouldn't want any help getting out of my wine and drug enduced predicament brought on by some emotional problems I found too difficult to handle sober, it would still be great if I was hauled off to jail and put into a rehab program where I could get my life back on track.

Hehehehehe...I laughed until I almost barfed. This character talks about being homeless and pulls out 5 thousand dollars worth of Euro pistols in a thousand dollar case...Hehehehehe. I would probably be carrying my old Charter 5 shot .38 Spl. and a Leinad double barrel 41o with some 3"mag .410 shlls and a few long Colts in 45.That would give me good firepower in each hand and I could take a bird or rabbit with the .410.I would not worry about a CCW card if I was homeless. Around here the cops avoid the homeless like the plague.

Humm
well most of the homeless I have met, would have traded whatever they had long ago for booze or whatever their poison is.

i love dumb post but this one is really dumb in the first post why on earth bring the 22lr conversion also i wasnt going to respond but i just got a new sig from a movie so ill see if it works

i was homeless for a year an a half at the time i did have a weapon. But if that happened
to me now i would sell all but one one of my fs 1911s.

If all I could have is one to carry on the streets of a large city.

Then I guess it would have to be this one!

Polymer/Titanium: for weight and easy of maintenance.

Ammo: .410 for up close firepower and lack of trace ability (no rifling on shot, no having to pickup brass).

Revolver: Inheritally dependable!

Revolver

Specifically one of my Airlite models..342 Airlite Ti (no lock) would probably be the last one I'd sell...
