somewhere.
I am looking for my first "long range" rifle. The 22 is getting a bit tiresome. Time to reach out and touch something.

I went to Cabela's last night and found a used 710 in .270 Win. for 300 bucks. Any opinions on the rifle?

Want the truth?? I worked in a gun shop. We got a shipment in, looked them over, and sent them back.

IMO, get a good used Savage, Rem 700, CZ, Ruger etc. in something like .223. Add a good scope and don't look back.

KCV;

The 'word' on the 710's has been bad. So very close to 100% bad as to not make any difference. There may be a lone voice of dissent to my opinion somewhere, but that's all it'll be - lone.

From the ones I've seen actually being shot firsthand, they shoot well. The downside is that they are the Bic lighter 0f the rifle world. For less money you should be able to get a Stevens 200 and save a bit more for better glass, and you'll be far ahead than if you bought a model 710.

Terrible rough bolt, LOTS of plastic. Poorly made but will throw a accurate bullet. But you know what they say "Its not the arrow, its the indian."

Heard anything about the 770 (the successor to the 710)?

Right now, I'm looking at the 700 SPS DM as well.

My dad has Garand fever right now, so the rifle will most likely have to also be in .30- 06. That is, unless my dad gets one straight from SA in .308, in which case I'll be getting a .308. And he will be getting dirty looks at the range, I get the feeling (whoa, yoda talk).

Forget the 710... I've found what I want

Went to Dicks and found one of Remington's new- for- 2007 Varmit rifles (SPS varmit) in 223. Great balance. It also includes a scope (I know, not a great one, but an affordable one). Hope to get some money soon so I can buy it. Price is $600.

if it uses the nylon parts around the bolt/carrier assy., then run away. you can get a brand new Savage, stevens, or howa, for the same money or within 100 bucks, depending on where you get it.

I actually shot a 710 today. It fired everything it was fed, and made repeated hits out to 550yds. That being said the stock isn't very firm, nor is it very robust feeling overall. The nylon around the bolt way didn't make the bolt difficult to operate, nor did the bolt feel all that bad. I guess it's more about the overall and overwhelming tactile sense of cheapness it exudes. Really and truly a Mosin Nagant is a superior gun. Package deals aren't really my cup of tea but I have to admit that the five shots a year sort of hunter would be served well enough. The far more difficult attribute of "value" is relative here. I own a Savage 10FP that's been pi$$ing me off with it's inability to eject reliably. My rifle is very accurate, with a good solid feel to it, but I can't get a follow up shot to save my life with it!

710

well the 710 isnt the best made rifle you can find. I got mine on an impulse buy before I knew about this site and I was a few years younger. I had money burning a hole in my pocket and wanted a rifle. I saw .30-06 which was what I wanted and remington. I thought remington was a good reputable name and didnt think I could go wrong. Its true the bolt isnt smooth at all and makes it hard for follow up shots. If you like to customize rifles there really isnt much you can do to it, supposedly cant add an aftermarket trigger or new barrel. accuracy is good enough for deer. Most people say these are bubba rifles where you shoot one box of ammo a year and only during deer season. The deer wont mind what kind of rifle it is and this one will certainly drop deer, but for the money you can find cheaper better made bolt action rifles i.e. savage/stevens,mauser, mosin nagant

the biggest prob with the nylon parts , isn't the smoothness, it's that those parts can break apart on you. this was a big prob for Remmy, they did away with those parts in 2004 , i believe, but only made the rifle for 2 more years.

Hey,
I am about to buy a rem. 700 sps. and I also glanced at the 710. The 710 is junk. It feels too cheap. Got several good recomendations on the 700 sps and it isn't much more expensive.

I love Remington bolt guns, but I don't think I've ever heard a positive comment on the 710. That price is high. For a new gun at a bargain price, it's hard to beat the Savage 110. Even if the Savage were higher priced (don't think it is), it'd be worth the extra cash over the 710. Bare in mind, I'm only going on what I'm told. I've never even picked up the 710, but 100 percent negative comments, I don't think I want to pick one up.

I wouldn't buy a mil surp for hunting, been there, done that. The Nagant is a PITA to mount a scope on, a Mannlicher style action. If you want a mil surp collection, fine, but if you want a hunting rifle, a 700 Remington or Savage 110 are good choices and both can be had affordable.

My two cents worth is the same as everyone else. I looked at a 710 one time, never bothered for a second look. For the guy who shoots three round sighting in each year, then a couple shots at a deer, it will probably work fine. If you shoot more than that, you will likely be happier with something else.

Last year I bought a model 700 Remington .223 brand new on sale for $299. 1moa out of the box. That's hard to beat.

It's a complete piece of junk. At the gun store I work at, we got some in, and the bolts wouldn't even close, straight from the factory! They're a complete POS, and a sink-hole for money, because you won't get anything decent out of it. A mosin nagant 1891/30 is a better long-range weapon (not that I'm saying buy one fo those instead, just for an idea)--and those are about $80. Please, avoid the 710, it is one of the worst rifles I've ever seen roll through my store. I never get people to look at it, unless they're dead set on buying it and won't be swayed--I can't sell one and have a clean conscience the rest of the day.

Avoid them, you'll be happy you did.

I bought a 710 recently at walmart on clearance for $250 and with Remington's rebate offers going on right now i got it for $220. Hows that for a steal. By the way I know it's not a grade A rifle, but a 30 06 with a scope for about the price of an average .22 rifle and i couldn't pass it up.

it is okay for a beginner's rifle, but you will want something better, later on, plus, you should not spend 300 for that used, since you can still find them new, at the big box stores, for the same price, even with a scope on them.
something better, new would be a Stevens, it is a savage without the accutrigger, it will be more accurate, and it will also proly be cheaper.

710

Nothing good. I just got a Stevens 200 in .308 and I love it. 1" groups and very upgradable. Savage 110 action, and great value. The Stevens is in a class above the other two mentioned. Pull up Stevens 200 and read about it. :D
