Alright guys and girls. I'm looking to get a bolt action rimfire. More than likely a Ruger 77/?. I have quite a few .22lrs and I want something a little more powerfull. My main use will be long distance plinking and hunting. I want something between the .22lr and the .223 centerfire. I would like everyones advice that wants to chime in. Choices so far are the .17HMR, or .22mag. What do you guys and gals think?

Not too long ago, I was under the impression that the .22 mag would be affected less by wind than the .17hmr. I was, however, corrected by a couple of people. Whether I or they are right, I have not been able to investigate. I will say this though. I had a CZ452 in .22mag. I was a nice rifle. By the time I finished with the trigger, it was breaking at a crisp 2lbs or so. The rifle was a nice shooter, but I never got anything better than MOA accuracy out of it. Of course, I didn't try all available ammo, but I did try a good assortment. No, MOA isn't bad at all. In fact, it's pretty good, but the enemy of good is better.

Saturday, I had the opportunity to run a couple of mags though a Savage .17HMR. I don't know what model it was. It had a nice walnut finished wood stock (I think), the Accutrigger, and a stainless heavy barrel. Don't know what length it was. It was bone stock, except for the Vortex 3-9X scope that was on it (wasn't crazy about the scope at all). Never having laid eyes on the rifle before, I shot right at around a .8" group with it at 100 yards with the 9X scope. The ammo was some flavor of Hornady. I didn't pay much attention to the box.

After having shot it, I went right inside the shop and inquired into getting one myself. I was quoted a price of right at $300. I think that may be my next 100 yard plinker/target shooter. I know that .17 HMR isn't exactly cheap, but it's cheaper than loading my 77gr loads for my .223, just for shooting at 100 yards. That round is might zippy too. It gets to the target in no time. Nothing like shooting a .22.

This is just speculation, but I suspect that I could have done better with a little more time with the rifle and a better scope. That Vortex just wasn't nearly as clear as what I'm used to.

You know I do have a Savage .22lr and I love it! I may have to look into the Savage line also. I guess I should have also noted that I have a lot of .22mag on stock for use with my Single Six. That's why I was leaning that way. But as I also hear this.17 is a hell of a round. I'm just still leary about its stopping power on small game. I'm sure it will "do in" a squirrel or rabbit, but how will it fair on a ground hog or even a coyote??

The .17 will take the head clean off a squirrell or a rabbit. My bil has several friends who run hogs with dogs and they use the 17hmr. They tell him that it makes it through the skull then explodes like a hand grenade inside their head. It's a wild little bullet, mine just about makes it through a steel spinning target, yet it comes apart when I hit pine bark. I don't see a groundhog being a problem but I'd get some of the 20grain fmj rounds for yotes. The 17 is in a class all it's own and is a must have rifle, I'd get one then use the .223 when out calling coyotes.

Been there, done that.

I had the Savage bullbarrel thumbhole stocked 17 hmr. Shot very well and very flat. Traded it for a guitar. Then traded a 452 CZ in 17 mach ll for a CZ 452 in 22 mag. All three guns shot better than I can.
I got rid of the 17's because of ammo cost, plus I only used them on targets. Now I stick with my cheap 22lr ammo and if I need to reach out a little more I can uncased the mag.

Get a Sako Quad if you can find one. Mine is crazy accurate with all three barrels I own: 22lr, 17hm2, 22mag.

It give me .5" groups at 50 yards pretty consistently with the 22lr barrel.
It gives me better than .5" groups with the 17hm2 barrel.
It give less than 1" groups at 100 yards with the 22mag barrel.

Its a great rifle. I leave the 17hm2 barrel on it because I can set the scope for 50 yards and only have to hold over .5" when aiming at 100 yards.

22MAG....I have hunted squirrel with one for, a long, long time, and if you use the FMJ stuff, even body shots on the bushy tailed vermin wont destroy much edible meat.

The 22MAG with FMJ still deposits enough energy in a squirrel to make long range, one shot drops, even if you don't headshoot them! The 17HMR will generally blow them apart, so if your into golden brown, crispy fried squirrel for dinner, the 22MAG may be the way to go!

The 17HMR is a bit easier to fly at distance if groundhogging or the such, but if you shoot the 22MAG a bit, you'll get to know the trajectory well enough to easily dispatch whistle pigs with regularity at distance! hehehe

BTW...if you could only find yourself a 5mm Remington Rimfire Magnum.....

"stopping power on small game" the .17 hmr is my go to hog gun for big hogs...I have said it before on this forum, I kill big hogs with shots to the ear and even body shots and the results are devastating to the innards. dont think of it as a small game round, wish I could take some of you nay sayers in my cow pastures and watch me take some vermin hogs with it, I have cut some open and the liver, heart, lungs are jello.....100 yard shots and I got plenty of high caliber rifles to choose from..

there is no ability to interchange... and as Jim Watson said, the 17 fireball is a centerfire cartridge.

Right on. Seems to me the .17HMR is the most plentiful and inexpensive in its caliber. Looks like anywhere from $12.99-15.99 per 50rnds. I am still undecided though. I have been looking online at the Savage 93R17BTVS - Stainless Steel/Brown Laminate. Very nice looking rifle. If its anything like my cheapo Mark II F .22lr or 110FP .223 Tactical, both pre-accutrigger, it will be quite accurate. I really like my dad's M77 in .22 Hornet though. Thats why I am still considering a 77/22(RM or RMP), or 77/17(RM). So many choices.

I have that exact Savage you are looking at, and I would buy it again without hesitation.

My dad, who had never seen the rifle or an accutrigger, put 10 rounds into the head of a gray squirrel target at 120 yards.

Best deal I have found is on a Marlin 917V at Bass Pro for $189. Walmart wants $229 for it around here. This is the wood stock, heavy blue barrel version. Comes with 2 mags, 4 round and a 7 round. I love it. Heavy barreled rifles are sweet, but that extra 1.5 pounds is noticeable when carrying it around in the woods vs. my Marlin 25 in 22LR.

Picked up a CZ453 (set trigger) in 17 HMR about 6 months ago. Its an amazing gun:

The accuracy of this gun is beyond me. I'm not a particularly good shot, but I can make shots on game out to 100 yards under field conditions. Terminal performance is great - I have taken animal up to 10lbs with the V-MAX bullet - I would think you can go a bit larger with the newer controlled expansion rounds.

The .17HM2 is the cheapest rimfire more powerful than a .22LR, and though it isn't a big step up in power, it shoots much flatter and is pretty darn accurate. It also can be used for small game without tremendous meat damage (as can the .22WMR...the .17HMR cannot). The only flaw that I see with it is future ammunition availability and current local availability. That is why I sold mine and have no plans to get another (a Savage 93R17TRR is in the works).
