ive always thought desert eagle L5's were cool but ive heard more negative stuff about desert eagle then positive stuff

i would say .44 magnum desert eagle L5 but the only handgun ive found thats .44 caliber was desert eagle's and i dont want to buy a revolver

Coonan .357-

I believe there are good years and no so good as the company has changed hands a few times over the years, couldnt tell ya which ones to look for.

Desert Eagle is the same way, though, as production shifted to Israel and then back again quality varied. My only experience with one was a recent production (US made) .50 and it looked and shot great!

my dad had a 44 and 2 50ae's and a baby eagle in 45, all worked fine, never gave any problems i can remember.

im just going by the general attitude ive heard on alot of gun forums.just seems like its always that desert eagle's are mostly range weapons and there large and uncomfortable to hold.the L5 seems smaller though, which is why i specified it

how would the coonan .357 compare to a glock G31

give one a try see how you like it. the eagles are fun on the range, dad did shoot a few deer with them. i was young when he had them, my hand are medium size but with thick finger and palms. never really had any trouble shooting them. the 44 or 50 i can't remember. would just hit my dad with brass when shooting it left handed good thing he can shoot right or left like me.

something in 357 sig or even 10mm was what I was thinking as well. Have you handled a desert eagle? for me, the ergos were atrocious. An eaa witness in 10mm, or a plastic fantastic in 357sig would get you in the same ballpark performance as a desert eagle in 357 mag.

The coonan will be more expensive and not work as well as a glock 31. Ergos, sights etc are going to be personal preference.

ive only heard there large and uncomfortable.ive looked at 10mm auto glock's but in terms of .357 what about something like a sig sauer p226?
The P226 is a bit large for me, but not uncomfortablely so. Certainly much more practically sized than a DE......

Sounds like you might need to go to a gunshow and handle a few different guns to see what suits your hand.:)

There’s roughly two worlds of difference between a P226 and a Desert Eagle, +/- one world.

What are you looking for? What are you trying to do with the gun? What is the purpose? If it’s just to buy a “cool gun,” then you will find a lot of wildly divergent answers with no one better than another.

For any other purpose, it’s unlikely that DE and P226 are in any kind of conversation together. It’s like someone asking whether they should get a backhoe or a Mercedes C-class sedan. They aren’t really comparable or substitutable goods.

If what you want is something that will do the same kinds of things a .357 magnum will do but in an auto loader, a 10mm is the easiest answer. The .357 Sig can almost duplicate ONE .357 Mag load - the 125 grain light for caliber JHP. It cannot do any of the other stuff a .357 mag can do. A 10mm can do dang near ALL the stuff a .357 magnum can do, plus a touch further on the heavy bullet end. And it can do it in semi-auto formats that don’t require crazy magazine dimensions- it’s basically the same length as a 45 ACP.

Something in 10mm.... a Glock, CZ, 1911, or whatever. It will be much cheaper and easier to find than a DE, but will still go off with a big bang. You'll be able to find parts and magazines. Ammo isn't that hard to come by.

basically,im looking for something like this for home/small apartment defense.only in a handgun and not a revolver
It's very unlikely anybody on the forum would recommend a .44 Magnum as a "home/small apartment" defensive firearm.

hmm,i was kinda thinkin about gettin a 9mm glock.but i might just get a p226 legion and do this
You can do it with a Glock too, and it's a whole bunch cheaper than a SIG P226 Legion.

Let me clarify, that's buying a .40 S&W Glock and adding a .357 SIG barrel, though my guess is most would just recommend simply buying a 9mm pistol.

hmm,how would i do it with a glock

either way,ive looked at sig sauer also but mainly ive just been interested in desert eagle l5's or glocks but it sort of sounds like glocks would be a better option

so .357 sig or 10mm auto would be more of an option then? although,i never knew about the thing with getting a new barrel so i might just go with that

Most folks think of 10mm as a hunting round.

Both 10mm and .357 SIG (especially .357 SIG) are not common rounds, and both are probably more than you need for inside the home use. The more common rounds, such as 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP are generally better choices. It's really hard to not choose a 9mm pistol these days as the options are the greatest, ammo is both cheap and readily available, and 9mm is easier to shoot.

I have done the same with a Glock 31. IMHO for a Glock you must be careful to choose a .357 Sig and then add a .40 S&W bbl. Things you should look for in a Glock vs. Sig are:

- the action E.G DA/SA vs Safe Action,
- the Hammer vs striker,
- the height of the bore axis,
- the support of the cartrige in the chamber.

These are very different pistols and both are reliable and well-made. I had (and still have) many, many Glocks before I switched to Sig. I switched when I realized the grip angle was detrimental to my accuracy.

yeah, alot of the "10mm auto"thing was because i asked on another forum about revolvers because ive always been interested in revolvers but i dont like the concept of having to load a 6 shooter(yes,i know they have speed loaders,id just perfer something like a glock instead)and people told me about 10mm auto.which seems to have similar ballastics to a revolver

either way,if it has more "stopping power"then a 9mm but still good enough for something like home/small apartment defense.thats all im really looking for

The 10mm is the best fit given the desires stated IMO. But it really shines when a person reloads and hand loads their own ammo.

There is a great selection of bullet weights to be used, as well as load data ranging from mild to wild.

Factory ammo is often watered down and expensive. Not always, but often.

If you are farly new to a pistol, I would suggest you get a fairly heavy 9mm at first. This will lower recoil and likely do everything you need. Here is my current EDC. It started as a .p229 in 357 Sig, spent a few years as a .40 S&W and now wears a 9mm Legion RX Slide. I call her 'Halfbreed'. She lives in a Level 2 OWB holster I hacked. I use her cousin m11a1 9mm for IWB because it is internally phosphate coated to resist moisture. The 9mm 147 gr. HST +p Tactical load details follow

Here's my p226 mk25 (internally phosphate coated - water resistant).

20 (p226) or 15 (p229) of this ammo is nothing to sneeze at.
