What if military/LE calibers were banned?

If that ever comes to pass in the US it is time to resist as best as possible. That would be a sure sign of much worse come soon.

now, if I was shoosing to live in another country temporarily, knowing it had those restriction but allowed firearm ownership:
- 10mm, .45 GAP, .380 or 9x18, 9x21

- .30-06, .260, .30-30, any of the 7mm

For handguns, I'd keep shooting my 10mm and 9x23 Winchester. If 40 S&W was banned, I'd hope that 41 Action Express would make a resurgence.

For hunting, I'd go with 7x66 Vom Hofe (Super Express), 8x68S, and 35 Whelen. Those should cover most anything I'd be after.

Never happen? With the current makeup in the House and Senate, we're just one Obama away from it being reality. A ban on just military calibers is a best case scenario, by the way. </political discussion>

But as was the case with the 50BMG ban in CA, the market will respond: "Hello, Mr. Barrett, I'd like to order a .416 FUCA!".

There are other calibers that work as well, if not better than those that you listed.

If all the calibers get banned, can't they just invent new calibers?

.38 special
was that a military caliber?

Yes, it was.

I would think that a ban on current military calibers would include the 9mm and .45ACP for handguns, and .223 and .308 for rifles.

If law enforcement calibers were included that could mean the 9mm, .357SIG, .40S&W, 10mm, .45ACP, and .45GAP.

Maybe such a ban would also include the 12 gauge. That is used by both the military and the police.

I would agree that a caliber ban like they have in some countries is highly unlikely here, but I do think it is an interesting question that Strat81 posted.

This is interesting if you are talking about world military calibers or just the usa. If see people saying the 380 you are forgetting that the 380 and 32 was chambered in the colt pocket model issued to officers during WWII the 45 LC was issued in the Colt SAA and was used in the spanish american war so there goes that lets see well forget about the 38 spl too the 1899 M&P. I would choose the 454 for the big bore and a 357 sig for an auto rifle would be a 270 WSM and a good ol 10 ga heeheehaaahaaa

Thats easy, .357 in my highway patrolman and good old thuddy thuddy in my marlin. Add my 12 gauge and there's not much that trio wouldn't be able to handle.

Time to call it something else, since a ban on a certain caliber is just about as dumb and asinine.

9mm = .355 Luger :D
40S&W = 10mm Short :evil:
45ACP = .451 Standard Defense :neener:
5.56x45 = .223 Remington
7.62x51 = .308 Winchester

It seems Remington and Winchester have arbitrarily cured the forecasted problem of banning "military calibers."

If you want to talk serious technicalities... I'm certain that there is not a caliber in this world that hasn't been "used" by some type of military unit either recent or long ago.
