What if you had to travel from let's say St. Louis to California, and the year was 1840. BUT! You have your choice of ANY modern day weapon from then to now to choose from. You get to carry a rifle and a pistol only.

Keep in mind you will be using these arms for self defense and survival. So, off you go on your trusty steed, toting which 2 weapons to help you get to California?

Hangun: Glock 20 10mm. As much as I love my 1911, I'd take the Glock for its durability.

Rifle: tough call. Probably an FAL in .308 or an AK-47. Both offer decent power and accuracy and both are very durable.

Also all the ammo that that steed could pack.

I'll play.
I assume the "angel in charge" of ammo, mags, and spare parts will ride along....so...I'll take a M1A and a S&W mod 19. I'd feel O.K. with that.

I guess I better jump in here seeing how it's my thread.

For rifle I'd take my AK-47 ( for shootin varmits.. human and animal types!)

For pistol I'd take my Springfield 1911 (for shootin varmits.. human and animal types!) :D

AK-47 for rifle and Glock 21. Both are reliable and can take abuse.

Can I also take Kevlar Body Armor???? :)

I'd want my shotgun (mossy 590) with it's 9 shot capacity. The marinecote finish will be better as I get closer to the ocean. :) I could use slugs or buckshot for hunting. Dragon's Breath for burning down the house of the man who shot my Pa. Flares when I want to light someone's fire. Wide choices in ammo for a single gun.

Back to the original question: One rifle and one handgun? That's tough. For the rifle I only know it'd be a semi-auto, not bolt. For the handgun, I think the Barretta 92 would be a dandy choice. :)

edit to add: BigDeeeeee, your name is spelt wrong in your sig. ;) :D

A Glock for reliability, and either an M16 (preferably with the optional grenade launcher??) for firepower, or HK MP5 for reliability and manouverability

Damned if it isn't wrong on my birth certificate too.:D

I like the shotgun idea too, much more versatile under those curcumstances.:)

M-14 type rifle w/fiberglass stock and scope. Want to be able to do 600 yard shots and keep them away from me. Also want a bullet big enough for game. Don't want to shoot a buffalo with a 223 and when I get to bear country, I want something that I have a more confidence in (caliber wise). A 10 mm Glock M20 with a folding stock. Good size bullets, good capacity magazine. Also want a dog for a companion and as an early warning system.

Remember that most arms of the time were percussion muzzle loaders. Everyone knew you were "empty" after that first shot. Breechloaders didn't really reach the frontier until about 1870 and when they did, it was a surprise.

BTW, I'd rather befriend the Indians and learn their ways and fight them. Only trouble is that they'll probably try to lift my scalp first.:uhoh:

here ya go

DSA arms 16" FAL, and a Glock 18.

as many mags and as much ammo as I can have for each. I would feel fine taking any north american animal with the FAL, and any human would be in trouble. As for the glock, if I had a bear up close, then that full auto at contact range would be alright with me, and it would scare any two-legged varmints pretty bad

Rifle; Either a Barrett M82A1 50 BMG, or a M203 or a Marlin Leveraction in 45-70

Pistol: Springfield Omega 6" ported in 10mm

Could you consider a man portable Gatling gun in .223 a rifle????

Edge Weapon: Battle axe, and Katana............

I think either the mini-gun from predator, Barret 50 cal, or M16

Glock 40 cal or sti racegun in super

1840 aye?Still plenty of bears ,mountian lions,ect about, i would opt for a 44 mag revolver(taurus m44),and a shot gun(mossy 835).

I would take my Walther P-99 with all 10 16 round mags. I would take one of those sweet H&K rifles that we cost around 12 grand. I would also sneak my Glock 29 in there if the writer of this thread didn't see it. My P-99 is my favorite, but that 29 packs a nice punch. I'd also try to slip my PPK/S in my pocket too. (Can you tell I'm kinda attached to my handguns?)

i'd have to go with an sks for my rifle. stripper clips would be easy to carry and the bayonet would be good for spearing snakes without wasting ammo. for my pistol i'd take a good double-stack .45 and as much ammo and mags for both as i could carry. a decent ballistic vest would be helpful too.

I think Matt1911 hit it right, a 44 Mag. so you wouldn't have to worry about losing brass whichwould be in short supply, remember that caliber had yet to be created, so a reloading setup of some type would be needed to assure a constant supply. Speed loaders would take care of rapid reloads should the need arise. For a long gun I think I would lean either towards the Remington 870 with 8 shot capacity, (for the same case retention capability, and the ability to use varied loadings depending on the target.
Ex. Bird shot for small game and buckshot or slugs for large 2 and 4 legged game. If I decided to opt for a rifle, I think I would stick with what has worked well for over a hundred years. Make mine a Winchester 97 in 30-30.

I thought long and hard about this and being an Auto man it pained me to pick as I did.
