What Would You Carry?

Thanks for the advice. I am not a new shooter. I will check out the 9mm tomorrow since I am in the market for one. I like to try different manufacturers. Any idea what one should run price wise?
Sig is remanufacturing some guns and returning them to the retail market at a discounted price. I think I've seen them around $650. They come with a full warranty, etc.

If I were to become a cop and I was to furnish my own firearm out of my own funds AND I could carry whatever I wanted I would go with one of two different philosophies (and I'd really probably alternate between the two if I would be allowed):

1) Unlike "civilian" CCW and home defense usage where you only draw when you will likely need to actually fire, a LEO actually uses a gun sometimes for its deterrent factor and draws much more liberally. So, deterrent factor is important. With that in mind I still think the revolver should be considered a viable law enforcement firearm. There aren't very many deterrents better than 6 (well, the BG would only see 4 of them, but he'd probably be visualizing the rest) Speer Gold Dots actually staring back at him. I'd be OK with a .38spl or .357mag for that, but to maximize deterrent value (LEOs do carry openly so conceability doesn't matter) I'd probably go with a .41mag, .44spl or .45LC. To back it up I'd probably use a Kahr P9 or PM9 for those times when you just need the faster mag change.

2) An auto is pretty much the standard LEO sidearm today due to faster reloads and higher capacity, a LEO is more likely to need the higher capacity than non-LEOs are. A LEO gun needs to be durable and built like a tank (it may see abuse, it will be exposed to the elements, and it still needs to work). To cut the weight a tad (you'll be wearing it all day) I think I'd prefer a slightly lighter gun. I think I'd prefer a .45ACP with at least 8 rounds or a .40S&W with at least 11 in the mag. Also, if I'm buying it myself cost must be considered (a LEO, especially a new one, isn't making that much money). I'd consider (pretty much in order) the Ruger KP345, the Taurus 24/7 (either 15+1 rounds of .40 or 12+1 rounds of .45 in a lightweight and relatively compact package is quite nice), a used alloy S&W 3rd gen auto in .40 or .45 (probably the DAO and definately without the rails), the new Taurus PT1911 (an affordable aluminum alloy 1911 will be nice, assuming their 1911 proves reliable), my Taurus PT140 Milennium Pro (I really love and trust this gun, and I already own it), a used Glock in .45ACP, or a more expensive SIG or HK. If the department was paying for it I'd consider the same thing but the SIG would probably move up the list and the 24/7 down a little and I'd drop my Taurus PT140 from consideration (it is a smallish gun, and if they're buying why go with something I already have). If I went with the auto it would be backed up by either my Taurus 85CH, or should I get used to the gun my S&W 442.

I'd probably stick with the tried-and-true G17. Partially because you can't break 'em, and mostly because everyone else has one so parts, mags, ammo, &c. are cheap as chips and easy to find. Plus they're ligher than a steel framed gun, have plenty of capacity, and so forth.

Nine times out of ten when I see an LEO he has a Glock variant, usually a 17 or a 21. I figure there's got to be a reason for that.

Edit: G17, not 18. But an 18 would be nice, too.

If I were to become a newly-minted LEO next week?

Hmmm...

Most of the ones I know and respect carry SIGs and 1911's, although some are faithful to Gaston. Can't say I know a single one anymore who carrys a Smith auto, though. He's drinking Austrian Kool-Aid now.

My choice- stick with what I'm most comfortable with now, since I daily CCW a SIG P229 in 357sig. I do love my P220, though. Guess it depends on which one is closer when I would reach for the duty belt.

Now, I don't mean to slight the 1911, not in the least. I grew up shooting a 1911. I have more rounds downrange in my life through one than anything else. Heck, my wife owns and carries a 1911. I'm just a little more partial to SIG at this particular time in my life. 30 years ago if you'd asked this question I'd be writing this about 1911's and BHP's.

To my mind, a SIG, like a CZ75, is just an evolved BHP in a lot of ways. :D

Rabbit.

I'm not a leo, but from time to time i do carry firearms during tdy's for my civilian agency. We are issued Glock 19's and 17's in the field and they have served us (and me) well. My daily carry up until about a month ago has been a G19. I've recently started carrying a loaded operator 1911 and love it. The weight is a problem though, and I'll be looking at a lighter model and having some word done to it. To answer your question, and having to limit myself to one handgun:

handgun - Glock 19 (over the 1911 only because of familiarity with its function and magazine capacity)

rifle - LMT 16" carbine

shotgun - Remington 870.

buddy of mine has a sig 229 in 9mm and i really like that weapon. might be picking up a cpo'd version soon.

First look at the "authorized" list of the agency in question. If no other guidance then first choice would be SIG 220 DAK .45. Second choice is G21. Third: SIG226 DAK .40.

My preferred platform and caliber are 1911 and .45 ACP. If I were to choose a duty carry, I would stick with that but would probably consider a double-stack for increased capacity.

First, I'm not LEO, however, I have trained/coached quite a few at how to shoot.
With that said, the sheriff's dept. that is local to me used to allow the deputies to carry whatever they qualified with. One guy that was not very tall or didn't weigh that much, used to carry a 6" S&W mdl 29.
Ha! Barney Fife would have been proud of him.
The policy then changed to either .38 or .357 revolvers so that IF a gunfight ensued and one officer ran out of ammo, another officer could give ammo to the one that ran out. (A friend that was on the dept. told me, "Yeah right. Gomer is gonna run out of ammo, and ask me for some and get us both killed. Fat chance.")
They also were required to purchase their own firearms. No longer. . . .

With that said, IF I could carry whatever I wanted, I would choose:
1. My Colt Gold Cup, NM in .45 acp. -or-
2. My Colt Combat Commander in .45 acp -or-
3. My Glock G-21 in .45 acp -or-
4. I'd buy a Glock G-23 in .40 S&W -or- G-22 in .40 S&W -or-
5. Lastly, I'd carry my Beretta 92FS in 9mm Para.

'Pends on location.

If in Alaska, or someplace out in the boonies, with potentially large animal threats, probably a 4" Model 29 S&W.

Otherwise, probably a Glock 23 or 1911.

I would have Yost build one like Zak Smith's, but with a Titanium Grip safety
(I stole this from his web site)

If I had a choice, I'd carry a 1911A1 with the "curved" backstrap. Been shooting 'em for over 20 years, and they just feel like an extension of my finger...

No real heavy duty gunsmithing, other than good magazines, and a decent trigger, a little polishing and minor throating. I want reliablity, not glitz.

What my brother carried when he had his choice as a police officer - a 1911 in 45 ACP.

Springmom is right though - ibuprophen or aspirin would be used more on a daily basis - right behind an alert mind and a quick tongue.

If i suddenlt became a LEO and had ANY choice at all in firearms...

Fn 57. 20 rnd mag, accurate as heck, armor piercing (that comes real in handy, as LA shows....). Yes, i know it uses a 5.7mm round. I would still carry it.

If not that then a CZ 75 sounds good for some reason...

Glock, J-frame, Surefire, ASP, OC spray and a good cutting tool with an 870 in the car. Basically the same stuff that most cops carry. The only real difference would be the particular brands chosen or issued.

Some interesting choices thus far, especially the Steyr and the CZ. This
certainly is two weapons that I did not see much of in my days as a LEO.
I'm not surprised at the 1911's, Glocks, SIG's, and H&K's as all these are
wonderful firearms and great choices I might add. I am surprised at the
the very low count of Springfield's XD's; as I see this as a up and coming,
very promising pistol for both law enforcement and military use. As many
of you know, the XD-45 ACP took the best from SIG, Glock, H&K, and
the 1911 and combined those features into one "fantastic plastic" type
of pistol.

The Springfield XD-45 ACP and my NIB Les Baer Thunder Ranch 1911
.45 ACP would be alternate choices to my very reliable West German
SIG-SAUER .45 caliber P220A. Many thanks for the reply's so far; keep
'em coming.

(bottom of the 2nd)

in my pocket, a 642 with 135 gr +p.

in my owb holster, K9 with either 124 gr or 147 gr...
depending on my mood & what's less expensive.

i'd also carry a load of certainty about
how well i could put that much metal into
a biological system from 5 yds (15') to 15 yds (45') with a handgun.

in a closet 33 steps away, I'd also "carry" a 12 ga. loaded with 00.
