What is an over/under shotgun??

Ok, so people have a tendency to take me shooting, hand me a gun, and show me the safety and the trigger. If I like it, I ask what it is. I know the difference between shotguns and rifles, and revolvers and autos. But I'll be darned if I know what any of y'all is talking about when you say o/u!

Also called a "Superposed" it is a gun where the barrels are positioned to create a single sighting plane, whereas the SxS has the barrels joined horizontally
 
It may help to also understand that the other kind of two-barrel shotgun is the side-by-side, or s/s, which has the two barrels horizontally next to each other instead of one on top of the other.
 
Superposed, when referring to a particular brand (Browning) is a trademark, but many folks do use the term in a generic sense to describe the position of one barrel on top of the other. Typically seen when talking about a Euro maker who makes both O/U and SxS
