There are thousands out there but I've never considered buying one until recently. I haven't even looked twice at a Glock for two reasons. First, consider me a traditionalist. I like steel guns. Secondly, I think Glocks are ugly. Sigs, 1911s, CZs, etc have character.

Sell me on the Glock. What makes them superior to any other handgun?

Let me count the ways

1.It goes 'Bang!' when I pull the trigger.
2.It holds a lot of rounds.
3.It's reasonably accurate (you ain't gonna use it in bullseye competition but
the pistol's more accurate than the shooter)
4.It's damn-near unbreakable.
5.It goes 'Bang!' when I pull the trigger.
6.It holds a lot of rounds.
7.It goes 'Bang!' when I pull the trigger.

Good pistol, not great. They've had their fair share of problems. I don't think they live up to the hype. I agree with the guy who said to try an XD. :)

Nothing. They're a very good handgun. There are many other very handguns. Its biggest selling points are low weight & capacity for the size in all calibers but .45 ACP. They're very reliable. Compared to competing HKs, SIGs, and most 1911s they're very competitive on price. They're also very durable, and plenty accurate. They're very easy to maintain, and require only a single punch and very little training to detail strip and service on a field armorer level. There are armorers (both officially certified and not certified but still skilled gunsmiths & armorers) everywhere in the US and most of Europe. Extra magazines & spare parts are widely available and relatively inexpensive. All of that is difficult to beat.

The only reason I don't own one is that I can't shoot them worth a darn; with their grip angle being the most likely cause. I wish they were a better fit for me, or would switch to grip angle more like what's seen on SIGs or 1911s.

Try one at a local rental range or borrow one from a friend to test fire. If you shoot it at least relatively well I'd recommend buying one. If you don't shoot it so well - well there are plenty of other great options on the market.

Tons and Tons of testing. The Glock has probably seen more testing by different agencies around the world than any gun ever. They're also light and have a reputation for dependability.

Other than that, I think they're 2 by 4s, very reliable 2 by 4s but nonetheless, not the most ergonomic pistol in the world. I prefer Sigs and Walthers.

OK, what makes the XD superior to a Glock or a more conventional steel-framed gun?

I never made any claims regarding the XD as compared to conventional steel-framed guns. Personally, I'll take a Kimber Pro CDP over either the XD or Glock.

I believe XD is better than Glock primarily because of the chamber design. The XD also has noticeably fewer negligent discharges, due to additional safety features that aren't available on the Glock, as well as a few design shortcomings on the Glock that combine to make it even less safe than the XD.

Glock dominated sales in the double action semi-auto class for years, but the XD has come on like gangbusters. My sources MIGHT be wrong, but I've read and heard from neutral sources that XD actually now sells more pistols to the public than Glock over the last few years.

The XD has become Springfield Armory's "bread and butter gun", as far as sales.

They are an economical handgun that works. Glocks deserve much of the market place they have because they built a solid handgun, and they know how to market to the public. They also know how to sell to Law enforcement agencies.

And I glad to see M&P take a little of that market place.

Its a personal choice - The Sig 1911 is excellent and the 1911 goes back to the military days. ( Enjoy shooting Sig more then I ever did the Colts of that day)

The glock is easier to carry, Has more rounds and I don't care if it get knocked around, wet, droped, etc..........As for the XD-- never fired one, never held one.
(When I was buying the .45 I had 7 in front of me. The Sig 1911 felt the best in my hand and it was a sale. Again, its a personal choice)

~BEST~

Well to begin with the one thing tha makes Glock so great is that not a week goes by before we see a new thread popping up that is trying to bash Glock!

I am a Glock owner and I like them more than any other pistols for variety of reasons.

I live in a very rugged area and I like the durability that Glock offers. Glock offers lots of variety in number of calibers it offers. It is very accurate, especially the G34. When it comes to 9mm it offers very good range of magazine capacities ranging from 10-31 which is very important for me.

I think Glock is not UGLY at all. In fact I have not met a person in person who claims it be ugly. This is just general streotypical generalization of polymore pistols that people do not seem to get over for some reason.

I have had, and most discarded or given to my drivers/gunmen, all steel pistols such such as Sig, Colt, etc. Not because I did not like them, but because I just did not want to carry all steel anymore since lesser weight of a gun is important to me as I conceal carry. Whereas they serve my non-essentail staff well since they dont mind less capacity and heavy pistols.

We are living in a chanigng times, faster then ever before. When it comes to guns you will see the around the world the trend for compactness and high capacity. For example, M14 to M16 to M4! Or 303 to SKS to G3 to G36C, and the list goes on. Similar is the case with the SMGs look at MP5 and now MP5K and Mini Uzis.

Glock is tough. Drop safe. It means business. It may not be a collectors item, but it sure does make one's collection imcomplete if it aint in it. Why? Because Glock changed the way pistols are made.

Any questions about Glock toughness check this out:http://theprepared.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=90&Itemid=40 (Taken from a TFL member)

PS: To all other gun owners I dont mean any disrespect. It is just that I am surprised that people are trying to bash on Glock every week. Whereas proud Glock owners never post a thread against any other pistol. One word: Confidence!

I don't think that we non-Glockers necessarily want to bash them, it's just that the Glock community is so quick to put everything else down. I can't count how many times I've seen responses like "get Glock" and nothing else in the many "what should I buy threads".

When I respond to these, I try to give the good and bad of the guns I own or are familiar with and I think the "get Glock" answers do little other than to show that lots of folks drink kool-aid. If y'all quit acting so superior we'd quit bashing your plastic toys...

Glocks

I never liked Glocks until I fired one. Then two, three four and five. Each one that I have fired fit my hand well and I shot well. Not Browning High Power well but adequate. I've tried the G17,G19 G21 G30 and G36. The G36 will be my next purchase - not much capacity but .45ACP and I shot it BHP well.
