I live in CA. What do you guys reccomend for an assault rifle? I realize that in CA, we are limited. So far, the socom seems kewl and is on the CA approved list.

Thanks

We go through this time to time but IMHO the M1A in any of it's iterations is not only a great CA legal firearm but a great firearm PERIOD.

The SOCOM is mighty cool.

Chris

None of these are "assault weapons", of course...

The SOCOM is mighty expensive and fires a big game round. But it'd be hard to argue that it's anything but a great firearm.

The Kel-Tec SU-16CA is worth a good look.

The Mini-14 stainless/xytel is a nice little carbine, too, though IMHO the price is too high, and the benchrest guys will laugh at its accuracy.

Getting good magazines over 5 rounds can be a problem, but not as much of a problem as people think. You'll have to throw out a few, though, to get a bag of good ones. However, the Kel-tec takes standard AR magazines, which are mil-spec and tend to be more consistent, and cheaper, too. And it holds three of them, one in the magwell and two in the butt.

If I were to like in the California, I would probably have either a Remington 870P and stoke it with Tactical Reduced Recoil sligs or buck shot, or the Mini14 (is a 10 round mag for a 14 legal in Kali?). Just my opinion though.:D

M1A with a wood stock. In California you're better off not getting pulled over with a black rifle in you're trunk regardless of it's legality. The M1A or a Ruger mini-14 in wood looks like a grandpa's hunting rifle. You'd have to pour too much money into a mini-14 to make it a functional assult rifle.

I have an SU-16 and it's fun but it's mostly plastic and I'd hardly call it an "assult rifle".

Maybe check out .44 magnum or .30-30 lever actions as well a good shotgun if you're in the city.

Well, I wouldn't call it an assault rifle; but if I was in California and wanted a semi-auto rifle, some M1A variant would be my first choice - probably the 18" version.

OK..My bad with the "assault" verbiage, but here in Zooport CA, anything that shoots over 10 bullets might as well be an assault rifle.

I am new to the Rifle/shotgun world. I currently own a BAER TRS & a P226R. However, I desire a long arm. The 870P is looking like it might be my next purchase. However, I am worried that it will become harder to get semi auto rifles in CA as the laws change. As most of you know, San Fransisco is trying to make everyone bend over and grab their ankles. Hence, I have this feeling of being rushed to get a solid semi auto rifle while I can. Maybe I am being paranoid, but anything is possible here in NewPorsh CA.

Thanks for the comments. Keep them coming!

Do a search function - this thread gets through every two weeks or so.

Your basic choices for military-style rifles (in ascending order of cost):

SKS
Saiga (needs to be confirmed legal)
SU16
Garand
Mini 14/30
M1 Carbine
Some AR variants
M1A

plus some new funky variations on other rifles, like the Enterprise's stripper-clip fed FAL.

All will basically do what you want, and are reliable, although this topic always brings out people bashing various rifles. There are also hunting rifles like the BAR or remington 7400, if 4 rounds is sufficient.

Yeah but its illegal for you to shoot anything over 10 rnds. I don't get why you keep saying "assault rifle". You should be asking for a center fire carbine length rifle which is CA legal. :banghead:

If you got the cash, get this bad boy:

*Note* Don't forget that your not authorized to put that forward grip on yours, being in cali. :banghead: :(

The best "assault rifle" we can get in CA is the M1A and its variants.
After that, I'd go with a SU-16CA or SKS.. Then a Mini-14 .. then a fixed-mag AR-15

That's certainly an option too. I know they make 10 rd aftermarket mags for the 7400 but I'm not sure of their quality or reliablity. They make a 30-06 carbine that I could see that being a lot of fun to shoot at a lot less money than a M1A will run you. For that same money you could get a M1 Garand though.

A lever action .357 Marlin, Winchester 94 or a model 92 clone. (Seems like they may hold more than 10 rounds, too).;)

Since I live in a free state I hadn't checked em out, but what about the pump action AK's? These worth a darn? They legal in CA?

Why would you want to assault California? I have some fine friends from there.

Ohhh, I get yer meaning!

Roscoe listed the Saiga but the last time I looked on the CA DOJ website it was not allowed.

I live in NY (almost as bad as CA) ... but my sugesstion is the Dragunov (AKA Romak-3, SSG-97).

That stock dosen't qualify as a pistol grip because it is attached to the rest of the stock. It only comes with 10 round mags. Its basically an AK that fires 7.62x54R (same caliber as the AK just more of a cartridge). You can grab mill surplus 7.62x54R a lot cheaper then the 7.62x39 the AK fires. This gun is about $100 to $150 more than an AK but my guess is that this *should* work for CA.

My real advice ... get a second home outside of CA :p

am thinking that "assault rifle" is a poor phrase choice. a little naive perhaps?

a Marlin 30-30 with a Williams ghost ring and a 9 round butt cuff is plenty gun for most folks I know. think about it. you light off a few rounds in rapid succession and I know I would damn sure be able to find you. not a good idea unless the dinks are coming over the berm...and they aren't...but if they are, well, a couple of extra mags isn't going to do you much good anyway.

so yeah, you know, get a cowboy gun. maybe a cap and ball remmie 1858 to go with. might as well be stylish afterall.

the M1A? come on. you are in california. you ain't gonna get to keep it and you know you ain't gonna fire on the constable when he comes to take it so why spend the money?.

in the meantime...

me i have a mini, just 'cause, and it works fine. not a lot of money, no maintenance, cheap ammo, unbreakable. guess you could call it an assault rifle if you take into consideration the abuse i heap upon it. 62 grain Wolf hp, steel cases...goes bang every single time no matter what. it does its duty.

or you could get the keltec nitemare POS...also available...even cheaper.

assault rifle? just be careful you don't wave it at me young 'un.

Thumbhole stocks are considered an "evil" feature here in California, so no Dragunovs.

Best choice is M1A unless you want to go with an off-list AR lower. Since you are limited to 10-round magazines, why not have 10 rounds of .308 Win? ;)
