As the title says, what is the best Major and Minor Mod you've added to your AR15?

Also, what is the best necessary Mod?

.

As far as I know, a good AR doesn't NEED any mods. Still, I really value my Geiselle SSA-E triggers and UBR stocks.

Best Major Mod: 2,000 rounds of lake city 5.56 on stripper.
-Best Major Mod: Lots of magazines to go with the above.

Best Minor Mod: A Sling.

Best Necessary Mod: New Extractor (see above) :p

I have several AR's and would have to say each one has a best modification because they are all set up for different purposes.

M-4 the Eotech and 3x magnifier with flip out is a super nice addition.

24" bull barrel AR the Leupold VX3 LR scope was the best addition.

Varmint AR in 6.5 Grendel the RR 2 stage trigger was the best addition.

16" barreled Ar in .50 Beowulf the Ace skeleton stock was the best addition.

The best minor mod I've done is of major importance to me. I put a Falcon Ergo Grip on all my ARs. With the skinny stock A2 grip it's way too easy to get the first joint of my finger around the trigger. The Ergo Grip helps me maintain pad of finger on trigger, and better trigger control - and I have short, fat fingers. Point is, just find a grip that fits you.

In my opinion the best "mod" you can do to an AR is the Take Down pin detent capture. the rest is all upgrades and comfort items.

best major mod: Timney 3-1/2lb trigger. honorable mention: Eotech XPS2-0, FF forend

best minor mod: spike heavy buffer. honorable mention: comp/brake

most necessary: depends on rifle use. If i have to choose one, it would be a trigger. honorable mention: optics

Major: I added a 5.56 upper. :D I guess if you're going to have an AR, you might as well have at least one in a cheap ammo chambering.

Minor: Spikes nickle boron trigger group. Nice and smooth and uses standard parts that can be quickly replaced if something breaks.

At first I thought "nothing." But then I realized...

Accu Wedge. Little rubbery drop-in thing thing we've been using for decades that helps keep upper and lower taut and buffers recoil between them as well.

MOE Grip -- my hands are above-average size and I didn't realize how much I'd been "suffering" with stock pistol grips. These USA made Magpuls are also "drop-in" (but don't let detent spring pop out when you unscrew the original), inexpensive, convenient, and even include the screw -- it adds a small onboard storage area that is perfect to stuff an emergency spare-parts kit (including that detent spring you are gonna lose even though I mentiond it).

Will both cost you $30 with shipping!?

THAT's it!

Ammo and spare mags. I stink with my carbine compared to what I've seen in competitions. I need more practice, a class and potentially a magic spell.

Necessity mod that I desperately need: sling.

Not so necessary mod that I need to pick up soon: aimpoint or other optic, but at this point practicing with irons is better for me IMO

I think an ambi safety is the most necessary and probably the least useful (frequency of use) mod I have made to several o f my AR15s. They are are setup for us for self defense at some point and the ambi safety helps make that happen much easier. So that is my best minor modification which is my necessary modification.

Red dot optics (mostly Aimpoint) is the best major modification.

Adjustable trigger set screw - it made the LPK go from typically horrible milspec to hunting grade in on adjustment session. Now it has almost no creep, and because it took out 80% of the travel, most of the grit is gone, too. It's what really does the job, look around at all the precision triggers, most have that screw.

A3 flattop - the rail mount allows an easy cholce of mounting optics gunsmith free. Mounting a red dot becomes a no brainer, less than one minute, vs the 20 minutes of scope bases, rings, scope, and rework when it needs tweaking to get right. For that amount of time, I could be pulling into the range parking lot, with another optic to test on the spot, no little screws or fuss to mount up between magazines, either. In the field, I could install another and still be hunting accurate in the same time it took to screw up the first one. Another day of hunting vacation in the field vs. a ruined trip. A BUOS is better than BUIS, at least if you did bother to get good optics to begin with.

Red dot optic - been shooting one since I bought a 1GEN Aimpoint in the '70s, which I still have. They work better than scopes for me, a less restricted view in the window, no hunting for the target, both eyes open, put the dot on target and squeeze. They work twice as fast for me, leaving more time on target for better precision. For some reason I can't get them to pose like they do in the videos. Maybe they're wild compared to the hand fed ranch deer those guys pay to hunt.

I googled this and couldn't find it. What is it?

.

Mags, Sling and Wear marks.
My AR was purchased with an Ace skeleton stock with a 16" fixed carry handle carbine upper. I would like to put a 16" Mid length flattop upper with a free float tube on it

Depends on what you consider a "mod" I guess; to me a modification is a change to, or replacement of, a standard part. I wouldn't consider an optic or other direct bolt on item to be a "modification", much less would I consider ammo or a magazine to be a "modification".

But anyway, for me as a lefty, the things I change/add to any AR15 the day I get it, unless it is one I'm specifically keeping stock for some reason:

-MIAD grip
-"Gapper" for the space behind the trigger guard
-Ambi selector
-I have added a Norgon ambi catch (ambi mag catch) to one rifle, and as soon as I've shot enough rounds with it to be happy that it works reliably, add this to my "standard mods" list.

Beyond that it will depend on what tickles my fancy and how far I may indend for it to be shot.

There are just so many little bits and pieces you can buy for an AR15. It's hard to know which are more useful than the others, as a lot of it is purely subjective. Still, here are a few suggestions based on having owned a few ARs:

1) A better trigger (I like Rock River's 2-stage, but I still prefer a stock mil-spec trigger for serious guns)
2) Magpul furniture (any of it is good stuff)
3) A light mount (there are a few different ones, if you're into lights on your rifle)
4) Daniel Defense sling loop (this is a neat little add-on that attaches a sling loop on your receiver extension just behind the castle nut)

There are a lot more than this, but these are some that I've especially liked.

This is untrue.

Spend enough time putting rounds down range and it becomes pretty clear which mods are very useful, which ones are somewhat useful and which ones are just dead weight.

Um, there's a blurry line between mod and accessory, but I took a chance on the Magpul Angled Foregrip and for my comfort, it's been a great decision.

Items left to acquire:
MOE or CTR stock
MIAD grip
Optic for way later --- Taking THR advice and living off irons for now.
