For $135 less, MSRP, than that Classic 17, you can buy a current 4" 617 that will hold 10 rounds - and whose SS requires less protection from the elements, etc. You can spend the difference on some nice Ahrends grips, a HiViz SW617 sight, Wolff springs, and have some ammo funds left over. Want something just over 2/3 the weight? Try the J-frame 5" 63. The larger Hogues and Wolff springs will run you ~$38 more. Both go bang when you pull the trigger... or, fire them SA.
I've had a 4" SP-101, admittedly in .32, Ruger MKII, Ruger Single Six, and even an H&R. Believe me... the 4" 617 available new now is a fine revolver and far surpasses the othe others in utility and accuracy. The current 5" 63 is second on that list. Either would make a great 'kit' component. Still, for really bad times, I think a 64 and a bucket of .38s, hopefully 148gr full wadcutters and LHPSWCs, would make me feel more safe.
