Massad Ayoub. calls that a gun retention knife.
Fancy words for you picked the wrong old man to screw with.

Found a good quote...

A criminal seeking a target of opportunity will historically back off from his assault when he realizes he has picked the wrong victim. If he doesn’t back off, well, Darwin’s Law of Natural Selection will take its course once again.
I’ve come to call it, “Cause of death: sudden and acute failure of the victim selection process.

Dig out splinters, trim fingernails, cut string, wear out pockets, improvised screwdriver, hammer, etc.

To have something to sharpen when boys are over to see the daughter. Cleaning the gun is such a cliche....

I've used a knife everyday of my life since I was 5. Although I do carry one for self defense I also always have one for everyday chores. Also a knife from my pocket always works better than the cheesy resturaunt steak knives on a bad steak. I don't think my 357 would be a good choice for that job. If you do your own cooking I bet you used a knife today. Did you use your gun today? Somethings are just useful to have.

I just got a mental picture of Julia Child demonstrating a Glock as a food preparation tool. I must need some rest.

Ok, I think the OP is meaning as far as the whole CCW package goes. i.e., proper belt and holster combo, proper firearm, proper flashlight, etc. All the mentioned things are part of the CCW package and he wants to know how the knife fits in. Not what use a knife has alone. That's pretty damn obvious I would think.

I carry a high quality Benchmade knife that has been everything from a makeshift screwdriver, mallet, cutting device and boredom cure. I carried it with me prior to CCW and will continue to for most days of my life. I even carry it with me in 'those' places where guns are a no go.

Be careful who you lend it to. THey want to pull staples and cut wire.
I don't lend people my good knives. I have an SOG paratool with replaceable blades and if someone asks to borrow a knife that's what I hand them.

#2--opening those 'sealed for freshness' snack packages. annnnd #1--opening the child-proof asprin containers
Be honest you need the aspirin b/c of the "sealed 4 freshness" packages don't you. PITA to open...good use for a knife... :D

I carry a knife for everything but SD, really. I use it 5 10 times a day for little chores, and it is a daily part of my dress.

I say I don't carry a knife for SD for a few reasons, but what I should say is that it isn't even close to being a primary reason. This is true for a few reasons, the first being that I doubt, very seriously, that I will ever be in a position where I am going to have to shank someone. Knives specifically designed for self defense aren't as handy at other tasks. If I really need too, I figure any of the three knives I rotate between will be enough.

Add to that the fact that I am a pretty big guy and plenty capable of popping someone in the teeth with a degree of authority. I've no qualms about battering someone, and that would be my first response. Stabbing someone is pretty much a last ditch, kill or be killed line of defense for me.

Watch/read some of brownie or mercop's stuff.

I carry mine for food prep, mostly and sometimes motorcycle/car repairs. And, it's not a fancy pants knife at all. Just a 10 dollar parts store stainless chinese piece. But, it's sharp and pointy.

I have seen your picture, your huge. At 5'6" 150 lbs, I would not want to take a punch from you, and coming at you with a knife would just be plain silly.
Take comfort in being big, Thats why us old little guys hang out as much as we can with guys like you.

Same as mentioned. I use mine many times in the course of my day, even if I'm behind the desk. Envelopes, packages, food prep, food consumption (which my wife hates). I do run scenarios mentally and can find defensive uses for it, but those are mostly as a method for escape, not for deterance. If I'm going for my knife, something else already went very badly.

A little 3" blade is just fine for self-defense. You can filet someone pretty well with one. It'll certainly cause a big "oweee", especially when used to "shave" an incoming attack.

The real problem with a knife as a self-defense weapon is that many people cannot get past the brutality of it. Guns are viewed as more impersonal. "AMOK!", we say, "is the art of cruelty." Gun self-defense is the same thing, but people are able to separate the two. Knives don't give the user that luxury.

Seriously, folks, if you carry a knife, you should know the basics of how to use it in a fight. A two day seminar is all you need. More would be better, but knowing the seven attacks and one or two slice/block defenses, and how to stop someone doing repeated thrusts is better than nothing.

A lot of people will carry a knife "weak side" in case they cannot get to their gun. In case the fight goes to the ground etc.

If I had to preform a tracheotomy with a .45, it wouldn't go well.

But seriously, a knife and a gun just aren't in the same ballpark.

Different situations, different needs, different tools.

It's that simple.
