What kind of gun oil do you use?

I used to use WD40 followed by a good wipe down and then 3-in-1. You have to get most of the WD40 out or you can have a buildup problem over time. I now use BreakFree CLP and can tell the difference. CLP in the aerosol can foams up and gets into every little corner. It's much easier to coat the entire inside of the barrel with it too. Very rarely I have to use some Hoppe's to get copper out of the barrel or to clean a very old, abused gun. After cleaning with CLP I just wipe off the excess and don't have to reapply. Even my guns that are picky about how you lubricate them respond very well to this treatment. I use the grease that came with my Geissele trigger (AeroShell Grease 6 made by Shell) on the sear and associated springs - makes the trigger buttery smooth, lasts forever and is a noticeable improvement over any other lube I've tried. Eezox for long term storage. I still have the WD40 for when I'm out in the rain or drop a gun in a puddle, lake, plumbing fixture... (Yes, it happened, don't ask :).

For some reason I also remember Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether. (MTBE)
 
Every time I see one of these threads I am amazed at the lubes people use with no basis in fact.

This is just my opinion as an engineer after many years of shooting:

There is nothing I have tested that prevents corrosion on a working firearm as well as Eezox. Equally important it is chemically compatible with most synthetic oils (they don't curdle).

I am currently using Weapon Shield as my primary lube. Synthetic group V motor oils (ester based) also work well - they stay put. However, motor oils are not very good at corrosion protection. Being lighter than water they tend to float off in the presence of liquid water (condensation).

My solution is to use Eezox as the base oil and then Weapon Shield as the lube.

At the risk of ruffling some feathers, Hoppe's, Remoil, 3 in 1, WD40 and several others are not very good lubes or protectants. The fact that they work only points to the fact that most firearms are not very demanding when it comes to lube requirements.
 
I'm looking for a non petroleum based oil for my guns. I shoot Black Powder as well as Smokeless and petroleum based oils react badly with BP. And I only want one brand of gun oil around the house.
 
Where do you get sperm whale oil?

Actually I do at times as I still have some I puchased from Brownells way back when in the 60's?.

CLP all summer long, in the fall i use Mobil 1 syn , and when it get really chilly and i am out shooting 40 below or better i like syn automatic transmission fluid on my AR's
 
Anyone ever try Benchmade's "blue lube" for their gun? Made for knives ( well, made by a company that makes knives ) but I can't think of why I wouldn't be good on guns too.

Fully synthetic Mobil 1 5W30 for giving my AR BCA a bath, 20W50 for all other lubrication needs.
 
I use Slip2000 Gun Cleaner/Degreaser for cleaning, Rem Oil for a protective coat, and Slip200 Extreme Weapon Lube 30 Weight for most of my guns.
