What kind of powder for 8x57

Does anyone pull surplus rounds apart and replace the original powder with modern for a consistent shooting round? Or are the surplus generally close enough to not notice a difference?

I tried this with 154 gr. bullets and didn't have much success. I only tried them with IMR 4350 and having only about 200 I didn't really try an accuracy load. I just plinked with them in a milsurp after my heavy barreled custom Turk refused to shoot them well.

I do intend to retry this with some 198 gr. bullets after hunting season.

I shoot a custom vz-24 with a military barrel cut down to 26".i installed a Voere single set trigger, use fireformed norma brass,a 220 gr sierra boattail and 54 grains of Ramshot Hunter and a CCI 250 magnum primer. I built another gun like this for a hunting buddy of mine.We both get 2" groups at 500 yards,NO LIE! plus a straight 10 power super sniper scope.

IMR 4350 is the best all around powder in my 8x57. I use 45 grs with a 220 gr sierra GK and 45 grains with a 200 gr MK. Dead accurate with both. This is in a mixed parts german k98.

I had good results with accuracy and velocity with IMR4320 and the Sierra 175gr bullet. Kath, my wife used it for elk in Wyoming when we lived there. Didn't quite make the ideal antelope rifle, so I gave her my pre 64 Win M-70 FW. Before she took it and part of my scalp for good measure. Now our daughter Chris, who lives in Flagstaff, Arizona, uses it for everything and is very happy with it.

Some notes on my first outing with my reloads - I used Varget and H4895 with 150gr Hornady soft points. I did 10 of each load, 45.5g/50g Varget and 44g/51g H4895 along with a light load of 32g H4895 for my wife to try out. I found the Varget to seem to shoot 'smoother' (less of a sudden recoil motion I guess) but it was less accurate. The 51g load of H4895 proved to be not only the hardest hitting recoil but also the most accurate. All of the loads were printing within a 1.5" group at about 100yds.

I was using S&B and Privi brass (all once fired factory loads) and found the S&B to be a little long (had to trim down), harder to prime and harder to resize. The PPU brass worked without issues and was excellent. Both shot the same after reloading. All in all a great time.

I started pulling apart my Yugo surplus rounds since the primers are too hard for my rifle to reliably fire. They are 200gr BTFMJ over 42gr of powder. I reloaded them into some S&B cases with CCI primers since I'm saving the PPU cases for my good ammo. Easy quick way to make some cheap range plinking ammo.
