I have a Ruger Gunsite Scout in need of some decent glass. I would like something durable and with some decent magnification. What do you gents suggest?

You don't want anything with too high magnification in that type of scope... the field of view suffers greatly. 2.5x is perfect. I'd go with a Burris or Leupold in that power. Both are very good quality. Definitely nothing more than 4x.

I put a Burris on my GSR, great glass! I tried a Bushnell TR25 on it and it works nicely however the rifle shoots so well I decided it need some magnification. I liked the Burris over the Leupold mostly because the Burris seemed more compact.

Thanks for the suggestions. I had a 2x20 Simmons handgun scope on it that I had lying around, but it wasn't really working for me. And in bright sunlight I had trouble focusing on the crosshairs. I would like something pretty compact and up to 4x, but no higher.

scout rifle scope

I had a 2.5 leo Leopold on a tc that I really loved made a nice hunting pistol On my want to be mosin scout I have an inexpensive 2.5 scope to keep the whole set up as cheep as possible for a truck gun

I ran an adjustable eye relief 2x leupold m8 pistol scope for a while. I tworked pretty well, but I wish the eye relief would have adjusted a little shorter. The burris scout scope at 2.5x was better, but personally I'd just run a traditional 2-7x scope on that gun. scope's about the same price, you get more magnification, and you can still run both eyes open at 2x.

I have the Leopold FX-II Scout scope on my GSR, and while it is certainly a good scope, I'm having second thoughts about the low magnification. At my age (senior citizen status), my eyes are not what they used to be (and were never great), and with 2.5x I'm not comfortable shooting much beyond 150 yards. I have the Bushnell Banner 1.75x-4x Shotgun scope in a scout configuration on a couple of other rifles, and am thinking about getting one for the GSR. At 4x, I'm much more comfortable shooting longer range, and I really like the Circle-X reticle with the Bushnell scope. I know that is an unusual choice, but it has worked for me (the other two rifles are a Marlin 1894C in .357, and a .223 EBR). The GSR has a bit more recoil, but no worse, I should think, than a 12 ga shotgun, so I would expect the Bushnell to be able to handle it.

Well I put a cheap 2-7 on mine as a proof test of the whole scout concept before buying a Leupold. I am just chiming in to say, yes, higher than 4x magnification pretty much sucks in a scout scope. Now where did I put that dough I set aside for the Leupold???

I use a Leupold 2.5X28mm Scout. Leupold calls this an "intermediate eye
relief" or IER. For me the LER scopes work better on pistols.

as said, the m8 IER leupold scopes work well for this. I've got two scout-ish rifles and they both wear one (each). They show up used on ebay a lot, and Leupold still honors the warranty but I've not needed it. I paid 150 for mine, if I remember correctly. Now, using paypal or not will be your own personal struggle according to another thread on here, but they're good and they're out there, so good luck.

+1 for leatherwood works well, light weight durable. I mounted mine in see through scope mounts so can use my irons.

Leupold VXR Scout 1.5-5 w/Fire-Dot reticle. It works really well, and after trying the smaller 2.5 I will never go back.
It is not in the regular Leupold catalog, but can be found at SWFA in Texas. The part # at the time I bought it was LEU0154X33. Price then was $599. Add a pair of Leupold QRW 30mm rings (part # LEU49861), and you will be all set. The quick release rings will allow use of the excellent stock ghost-ring sights.
Also check out the Galco Safari Ching Sling; well worth it, and can be adjusted to fit other rifles.

OP,
But where are the pix? Where's the review??
We all want to see and hear about it!

Sorry. I bought the rifle just before moving to Alaska. I will be doing some small game hunting, but no big game til next year.
Only shot about sixty rounds through it. Function has been perfect and fifty yard groups have been all holes touching. But 100 yard groups suffered because I don't think I had quite enough magnification. My glasses aren't so great right now either. I know it will do better, just need to shoot it more.
I would have liked it better if they had kept the stock magazine and added a charger guide instead of going win detachable magazines though.

I was interested in that one as well. I posted questions about it on scout rifle.org. Several people owned it. None seemed overly excited about it. The biggest complaint was just that... it's a long and large scope. Pictures of it mounted on a rifle show it to be much larger than something like an IER fixed power Leupold.

There's a picture of one mounted on a GSR in that second thread.

My GSR is still unscoped because I haven't really settled on a choice either...
