What makes a 22 LR rifle or pistol fun?

I got bored with my 10/22's few years ago but with recent high cost and shortage of center fire bought a Ruger 22/45 . All I can do is punch paper at the indoor range all my old folks with farms are gone.

I'm just curious why all of sudden this is something that I never really cared about in the past but now I see it as an interesting thing.

I think when we start shooting, we want to 'grow up' to bigger and 'better' things. After many years of shooting I'm (for the most part) as happy to shoot rimfire as centerfire and there are whole forums dedicated to just that. The ammo is cheaper, it's less recoil, and 90% of the shooting experience is the same. The rimfire guns we have today are great (even the old stuff was good), and they come in a wide variety so you get to choose your adventure.

I guess that is true more or less. Like I said when I was a kid I had a lot of fun plinking with a 22 off of my parents deck. I remember with two 25 round mags a 500 or 550 round pack would last me a week or two at most. Then when I was old enough to buy anything I could legally afford I bought a Russian SKS. At the time it was cool looking had a bigger round, made a bigger boom, and had some recoil to it. 20 years ago when I bought it I was 18 and the ammo was dirt cheap. I remember buying 1000 round pack for $100. I still have about 650 of those 1000.

I thought that rifle was super cool back then. Last time I went to range I actually took it with me. First time in a long time I shot about 10 rounds through it and put it away. Now I look at that rifle and wonder why people love them so much? It's a crude rifle that just feels so rough. I managed to put 10 rounds on paper with open sights at 100 yards. I think one round actually hit the 3 inch target on a piece of printer paper.

I shot much more rim fire accurately and had more fun doing it between my roughrider pistol teven my AR with the 22 LR conversion kit. I found the conversion kit in my long barrel AR with a wylde chamber sucks for accuracy but still comparable to the SKS using irons. I guess the kicker is the 22 costs a bit less even using 20 year old $.10 per round 7.62X39. Then when I come I don't have to sort the brass, prep it and reload it.
