Welcome to THR bufallo

Nice looking iron Palehorseman. What kind of groups have you managed to get from that smoothbore Fusil?

Haven't fired it yet, but my first muzzleloader arrived in the mail today. Last week I saw that Midway had a left handed .50 Lyman Great Plains flint lock on clearance for $447. When I looked at it two days later, it was down to $425. After I completed my income tax :) it was down to $402. SOLD! I've been considering that buy for years.

I like T/C muzzleloaders. I have a Thompson Center Hawken 50 caliber percussion rifle and a more modern Omega. I've killed a lot of deer with them.

["Nice looking iron Palehorseman. What kind of groups have you managed to get from that smoothbore Fusil?"]

Best I can do is minute of beer can at 25 yds and pie plate at 50.

But it is mostly used with shot for bunnies, tree rats and the Eurasian collared dove which can be hunted year round here in AZ

I shoot a flintlock smoothbore. It is known as the Pennsylvania smoothrifle from Jim Chambers. It is a fabulous gun and an excellent shooter with the large siler lock and the 46 inch Longhammock barrel.
You can see the gun at: http://www.flintlocks.com/RK-07.htm

My wife shoots a flintlock blunderbuss with a massive 75 caliber bore .....

Ohio Rusty ><>

Ohio Rusty, Fine looking rifle, what cal is. Love smooth bores and shot guns. One CVA SXS 12 gauge and a flint lock/percussion 12 gauge single. Made by a local black powder gun maker. Would love to have a 20gauge fowler. It was just the picture of your rifle. What did it cost and how long did you have to wait for it. Cabala's had a sale with free shipping. So I bought a 1851 short barrel Sheriff in 44 cal. God I have to stay of the forum. You guys tempt me to much.
Wow, your wife shoots 75cal blunderbuss, that is cool. Show us a picture of her shooting it.

Full stock Hawken percussion that I built (Bill Large bbl and breech, Ron Long lock), 0.495 ball over 120 grains of 3F. Thats for deer or shooting matches.

For Elk, a Steve Zihn built 60, flintlock, 44" bbl with Chambers lock, over 140 grains 2F (primed with same).

I must be the only guy here with a remington 700ML. It's a .54 cal. And I shoot round balls. They are way more accurate than any conicals or saboted bullets that I've shot out of it so far. Usually I use 100-120 grains of Pyrodex or 2 of the 60 grain pellets.

I like it.

My favorite rifle that I own is a .54 half stock Hawken that a friend of mine made.
The stock came off a tree that was hit by lightning. 60 grains FF .15 patch .530 round ball for target work and a double load for big game.
My Small game rifle is a .38 caliber percussion long rifle made in 1950 by Royland Southgate. 40 grains FFF .10 patch .375 round ball is the only load I use in this rifle as it likes it the best. Andy

dragoon pistol and just finished a doglock blunderbuss

Pair of Colts - a '49 pocket and a '51 navy. I cast my own .380 ball for the navy with a Lee electric lead melter and Lee double cavity mold. For the .31 I buy .32 ball but want to buy a Lee mold for that one too. For powder I use 777 for it's clean up properties. I use an over powder felt wad on the navy with vegetable shortening (like Crisco your side of the pond) over the ball on both. For caps on the navy I use RWS as I have Treso cones. For the pocket I use CCI#11.

I'm sure I could improve on the performance of these loads by using real black powder but it's treated as an explosive here in Blighty so requires yet another licence and more red tape. 777/Pyro is less restricted.

Hope that's useful info.

"Little Bertha", my 8 gauge smoothbore, uses a 2 ounce .810 ball atop 135 grains of FFg black and a #11 cap, the standard load for this size gun.
The Brown Bess uses a paper cartridge which holds 65 grains of FFFg (priming and main charge together) and a .690 ball.
The .54 flint long rifle built by Jim Correll gets about 75 grains of FFg and a .530 patched ball. I prime with a pinch of FFFFg.
The .50 flint long rifle built by Gerry Vermeesch gets the same powder and priming charges and a patched .490 ball.
The old percussion Euroarms Kentuckian .44 uses 55 grains of FFg, a #11 cap and patched .440 ball.
I cut .010 cotton patches at the muzzle, lubricate with spit at the range and mutton tallow/beeswax if the charge will sit in the barrel for awhile.

What Do I Shoot?

Greetings!

I picked up a mail-order Pedersoli 12ga. Double in the early 80's; I used 'newspaper' wads and #6 to #4 on the Rabbits out by Edwards AFB. It worked great, until the Cal. Condors moved in.
My first handgun was a Lyman / Remington 1858, .44; I bought it at B&B Sales, No. Hollywood Store on April 17, 1982 (a year out of HighSchool). About seven years later, I started working at B&B Sales, Westminster. They made me wait fifteen days for it; some new Law that no one really understood was to blame.
I also get a kick out of my LeMat, a Very Classy revolver that I fell in love with after I saw it on the cover of an Am. Rifleman: 1978? I haven't tried the solid ball out of the .65" Bbl. yet, but I'm looking forward to it.
There are a few others that I NEED to take out & make smoke with... One of these weekends!

Be Well!

M.T.Marfield

All I have right now is a Uberti .44 1858 Remington.
My current charge is 30 grains of Goex FFFg, Hornady .454 round ball, CCI standard No. 10 cap.

In the future, I plan to add the following as they can be afforded:

1853 Enfield Replica .58 Caliber
1860 Colt replica .44 Caliber
1851 Colt Replica with square triggerguard .36 caliber
Flintlock Committee of Safety musket .62 Caliber (I want something along the lines of a Brown Bess only with a smaller bore)
Flintlock Georgian Pistol .62 Caliber
Pedersoli Double Barrel Percussion 20 gauge shotgun with the barrels cut down to about 15"

I check Track of the Wolf and Dixie Gun works daily, but alas, I am a college student with a part time job. I may have to content myself with the Enfield and another revolver as they can be afforded and just live with that for a good long while.

Moharrow - Did you build that Dragoon pistol or is it one of the Indian replicas?

it started life as an indian replica, I had to rework the lock and replace the cheap stock with a decent piece of walnut, when I got it from a friend the stock was cracked from the trigger guard to the ball butt

its kind of a shame they don't spend a little more time on them. they could be really nice out of the box if they would use nicer wood and harden the sears and tumblers properly

What guns do you shoot?

I like all forms of shooting and BP in particular. I tend to shoot the ones that I lay hands on. Included is a project I am working on.

This blanket gun started out in Missouri where it was converted from a 12 gauge something. It kept Missouri safe but apparently ate too many of kwhi43's .32 cal balls. So it was promoted from Safe Queen in Missouri to Chief of Security in Yacolt Washington. It doesn't eat as much as the Howdah or the Walker so its job is fairly secure.

Higene

PS: Love that blunderbuss.
