Mossberg 44us - made in the 40's - used to treach brm by the army
Garand - IH - made in 53 or 54, parts queen - main battle rifle for many years

What other American milsurps can I get without a tax stamp that were actually issued arms?

While I would love one, they aren't exactly easy to get a hold of. If I see one in the next few years, I will attempt to get the wife to let me get one :)

do yourself a favor and get a M1903a3.Excellent rifles, very slick action, very well balanced and very accurate depending.A decent one will go for around 450 to 500 beans and up unless you score a deal.

unfortunately American milsurp just isn't bargain priced like Yugo and Russian guns.

lionking,
another one I would like to find in good shape. The rifles must be shootable, without major work or needing a whole new stock. I am glad people aren't mentioning stuff that can't be found in good working order... a rifle that cant shoot is as good as a boat anchor to me (and I don't have a boat)

on gun forums in the for sale section you will find with patience one for sale, gunboards members often sell at more reasonable prices.

But auction sites if you are patient you will find nice ones also. For a real nice one expect to pay $700 to $800 depending. If it has a Scant or Cstock and cartouches that adds some also.

I really like it when they show good photos including bore and throat gauges or at least shows a bullet test and defines condition of bore with words. Some who sell namely dealers mark up higher and are not very informative other that saying something like "fine condition" or something.

If you wait and pass up there will be a point when you find somebody selling a good one priced to sell or just get lucky and people don't bid it up to high.

Scythefwd,

If you go to the CMP website you can find fully functional M1 Carbines from $419 to $675.

They also occasionally have M1 Springfields, M1917 Enfields, and rarely a Krag-Jorgenson or two.

Lots of different choice if you extend your collecting to shotguns (Winchester Models 97 and 12; Savage Model 77; etc) and pistols (Colt, Remington-Rand, and others 1911; Colt and Smith & Wesson Model 1917; etc).

Enjoy your collecting.

Sincerely,

Prof. A. Wickwire

I have a couple unusual U.S. military rifles;

one Remington made model of 1916 Mosin Nagant with ord bombs, as well as a Winchester 95 saddlecarbine in 30/40 Krag, with ord bombs.
Came from a friends dad who was an eskimo Scout in WWII in the Alaska Territorial Guard (ATG). He got to keep it after the war like all the men up here..... a real Militia, outfitted by the gov.....wouldnt that rock today?

Every ex military should have taken their guns home with them, don't you think? Qualifying with Uncle Sam should be enough to own them outright.

Trapdoor Springfield, cal. 45-70. Served from the 1870s through the Spanish American War. Reserve units had them even longer.

Too bad you can't ask Custer's people how they liked them.

US Milsurp

Some Johnsons were semi - some were select fire.
Last semi I saw at a gunshow about 3 months ago (seller had two of them) were tagged at $2300 each.
If you've got 1400 to 1900 bucks sitting in the kitty, you can also buy model 1917 and 1919 Browning Light Machine guns in semi-auto.
AND if you've got a bit over $3000, you can get a semi-auto BAR.
Don't forget the Model 1898-1905 Colt New Service Army is .38 SPL and the S&W M&P .38s.
Also some Beretta M9s are beginning to show up in the used market - don't know if they're surplus or "liberated" pieces.

Semi-auto and civillian-legal. Just not common or cheap. Johnson built a LMG that shared many parts, thus the confusion.

just received a bayonet for it today, made in 1902 in excellent condition to match this Krag made in 1902 also.Got a repro sling for it last week.Got ammo for it 2 weeks ago, time to try it out.:D

Krags have gone up a lot lately. If you are not too much into the authentic look you might find one sporterized or Bubbaized for 1/4 what a good condition mill surp is gonna cost ya. Recentlly the Krags from CMP were all parade, de-milled, welded rifles. They have said they don't think they will be getting anymore but you never know. It's the greatest resource. Get your paper work in and buy one of the M1 Carbines they currently have, but don't wait too long. Someday they will be all gone. I got one of the 1903 Springfields several years ago and they may never have that rifle again. You can sign up for their email newsletter.
