What other hobbyist group is most likely to drift into the gun hobby?

Definitely video gamers and computery types, particularly if you're looking for young men. You'll find a lot of machismo and firearms interest in those areas, but often very little firearms knowledge and expertise.

I know many martial artists and surprisingly few are into firearms enough to purchase their own. Oddly, I know no martial artists who have concealed carry permits.

Bicyclist, no, the road bicyclists are most often yuppies. Mountain bikers (like myself) like being outdoors, like machines and gadgets, and so shoot comes easily to me as well as others I know. However Mountain biking was started by hippies and most hippies love the first amendment and hate the 2nd so it probably won't win you any friends to go to a bike shop looking for range buddies.
I dunno. When I started road and track racing in the early eighties there were a lot of "blue collar" bike racers, and a lot of those folks enjoyed guns. Sometime in the 90s, it seems to me, the "Lance" phenomenon took over and road cycling turned into a pretty trendy thing. A lot of health club types signed up and the whole sport took a turn. For the worse, IMO. Certainly the "new breed" is the type that thinks that Feinstein's doing a pretty fine job.

Mountain bikers? Seems like there are two distinct breeds: the hardcore "warrior" type that's into self-sufficiency, 4WD, etc, and the granola muncher type who uses the bike as part of a complete fitness program including yoga and aroma therapy. The former tend to enjoy guns. The latter...

Hey, here's a whacky one: how about pipe smokers? I'm a pipe hobbyist and I know several others who are interested in guns. Usually antiques, replicas, etc., but it seems like more than 50% of the pipe smokers I meet enjoy guns of one type or another.

Anyone familiar with gunwriter Rick Hacker? He's also the "pipe guru", writing under the name Richard Carlton Hacker, and has put out a number of pipe books and articles for pipe mags. Probably his most famous pipe book includes a pipe photo with a very nice custom flintlock as a backdrop. He's even been knighted by the Pipe Society of France.

I was into coins and currency long before I was ever really seriously into guns. I think car or motorcycle enthusiasts would like guns because they're mechanical things that they can take apart and see how they work. People who are interested in history (like myself) would get into them because guns have, of course, played a huge part in history. And, for whatever reason, knife enthusiasts tend to like guns, or gun enthusiasts tend to like knives. Which is it?

In my own case it was my interest in military history that got me into firearms. I read a lot less military history than I did when I was much younger, but the interest in guns stuck.

littledoc "...Camera and watch collectors also come to mind."

I was surprised to see another watch and camera collector.
I admire the work and toil that went into the fine mechanical instruments, especially with interacting pieces. I know this sounds odd, but sewing machines have always fascinated me too

Any intricate work, Reloading, flytying, even took a turn at making circuitry boards and stained glass.

Hence the monaker: hobbeeman

Well...

if the Gun show I have a table at is any indication, you guys are into Beanie Babies, eating beef jerky and homemade dolls.....

Just what I see......

Lots of good answers, but I didn't see the model rocket folks mentioned. The kind that use 'explosives' and send them up in the air. At least they should be our allies since the BATFE is persecuting them also.

I quilt but don't find it to be a popular hobby with other gun owners.

Or at least not until they need something sewn. :)

I shot a couple guns before getting into paintball, but before really getting into guns I was really into paintball for awhile. I also did a lot of outdoors struff.

I too am one of those EDC people ... Knife , flashlight , firearm , ... always. And always looking for a brighter smaller light , a knife that is more perfect than the last , ... and of course a better carry gun and effective rifle.

Politics. - it's a more amazing spectator sport than football ... and the season is never ending. All the gun banning crew is on the other team than I am. researching the lies of the banners pushed me solidly to the right.

Knives - the most basic tool of humanity. You can't carry a knife for utility without knowing it is a lethal weapon as well. And you realize owning one isn't going to make you fly into a rage and kill all the children in the local school. - no matter what Rosie and Katie say.

Martial arts - serious open minded martial artists quickly realize that a study of violence had better include the most effective tools : guns.

News - Did we all see Huuricane Katrina ?

I have been absolutely astounded at the number of pilots I know who have concealed carry permits. Seriously--the number approaches 50%. Make it shooters, instead of permit holders, and it's probably 75%. Gunowners, nearly 100%.

Somebody once did a study on pilots, and decided that 90% of us are "control freaks:" we like to be in charge.

Tell me that doesn't describe gunnies: we keep guns for fun, and for defense, because we like to be the masters of our own fate.

started with dart/bb gun, then to paintballing, archery, cars, motorcycles then at age 18 rifles, 21 is now handguns.

im too scared to ride a bike too, even though i took the course. seen too many bad accidents.

I come out of high power sport rocketry. Another hobby where one can make fire, smoke, and noise!

Ham radio, too.
And computers.
Oh, and military history.
Plus, I'm a former jarhead.
Bike rider.
Too many different connections. Going to bed now...

"Gear Heads"

I am a certified Auto & Diseal mechanic and a true "Gear Head" The only thing I like more than firearms are old muscle cars. I think it has to do with the fact I realy like to find out how something works. The best way to do this is to take it apart and put it back together again. Same with guns.:)

I can honeslty say that it was my interest in airsoft that brought me to eventually get into real firearms. I live in a state still affected by the AWB so arsoft was an outlet for me to nurture my interest in firearms. I own over 30 replica's and not the cheap chinese clones either. Now tht I am eighteen I've decided to pursue shooting more openl and I go to the range once a twice a month.

How about drug dealing? I know several gun enthusiasts who took an interest in guns after they took up drug-dealing as a part-time avocation.
:scrutiny:

I am also another one of the off road crowd. If you find a group of guys with jacked up trucks, and jeeps with winches, snorkels, light bars, and quads in the bed odds are more than a few of them are "gun nuts" as well. The two hobbies just seem to go together. Also I have noticed alot of people into photography seem to be into guns as well. A certian friend of mine who does photography on the side is into guns as well as quite a few of her friends in the same field. I guess buying that fancy new camera with all the gear to go along with it is the same as buying the fancy new gun with all the trimmings. I need to have her take some pro shots of my toys some day.
