I am looking for a powder that can be used in 40 with a 165gr bullet and in the 45 acp with a 230 gr bullet. i would like a clean powder and one that uses a low powder charge

I know it is more or less what can be found, but maybe i can get lucky, and what is the best online place to get powder??

WW-231, Bullseye, Titegroup, Unique, HS-6, HP-38, 700-X, Clays, --- there, that ought to get you started!

rc

Unique is good, but dirty, even the new formula. Universal performs very well and is much cleaner, can't go wrong with it.

Since you are asking for an Accurate Arms powder for loading both the .45 Auto and 40 S&W I agree AA#5 is probably the best choice. BTW, AA#5 was developed specifically for use in the .45 Auto.

I'm taking a break from Unique and I have found AA#5 to be a good substitute. For 45acp. and .38spl #5 meters excellent and burns clean at upper end loadings for the above mentioned cartridges, I don't reload for the .40 S&W.

Vihtavuori N320 is about right.

Lots of 'run and gun' folks including the CZ team say this uses less powder, measures great, and is the cleanest powder they ever used. It may cost a few cents more/rd.

I'm in the process of switching to Vit now. For 9mm 124gr I was using 4.3grs of Win 231. Vit is 4.0grs. The heavier bullets might need N330...need to check Vit's recommendations.

N320 is extremely hard to beat in .45. I haven't tried it in .40. AA #2 will do almost everything N320 will, and is cheaper. I have used AA #2 in .40 & .45 with good results. AA #2 is a bit fast for the .40, so tread lightly. As already suggested, AA #5 is a very good choice to cover both those applications. I really like Universal Clays in .40, and it does well in .45 also.

Since you are asking for an Accurate Arms powder

im sorry i ment accurate like on target not the company.

the 2 powders i have right now is 700x and 231 i was going to take a trip to the sportingoods store and see if they have what im looking for.

the list of powders i have to take with me are:
Clays, titegroup, hp-38, bullseye, #5, #2, wst, wsf, n230 zip and pb
is there any others i should add to the list or delete?

i got all these powders from my 2 manuals i found that all these powders work with 165gr .40 and 230gr .45 acp and used low charges but i have no clue which ones are clean buring and neither of my manuals touch on it

the 2 powders i have right now is 700x and 231
I shot nothing else for many years. W-231 in .45, and 700X in .38 Spl & .44 Spl. Then I started buying different calibers, and then I started really experimenting with all the new powders that were unavailble 25 years ago.

i was in luck i went to the sporting goods store with my list of powders and they had 1 14oz can of clays and 2 1lb cans of n320 so i bought all 3 maybe i should go get a lottery ticket maybe ill get lucky again

Kraylon, where in Colorado are you finding two cans of N320 on the shelf???

I should have thought of this situation before extolling the virtues of the VihtaVuori powders on other threads...

Therefore, my new advise is for you to not buy any VihtaVuori powders because:

1) They're just too expensive and your wife, girlfriend, or "significant other" will get mad at you,

2) Part of the fun of reloading is constantly wondering if your powder measure dropped the entire amount of powder it was supposed to,

3) Cleaning your guns is one of the truly pleasurable parts of gun ownership,

4) And finally, when you buy VihtaVuori powders it leaves less for those of us who don't know any better...

i reload the wifes ammo too she likes shooting her sig p229 and sometimes if im lucky she will pay for some of the reloading supplies

i noticed it flows great in my lyman dps 3 :)

3) Cleaning your guns is one of the truly pleasurable parts of gun ownership,

this is the part i don't like about shooting i try to avoid it at all cost :cuss:

i bought it all up so you who don't know better can buy the stuff i don't want :neener:

ill find out how well it shots friday

Wow. I should have put in a smiley. N320 is good powder, no doubt about it, but it is the high priced spread and hard to find even in good times.

I am just as happy with HP38 (W231) for such applications.

(Actually, Hodgdon says it's one word- Tightgroup.)

Actually, Hodgdon says you should not spell it as though it were English - Titegroup.
