The Remington and Ithica have a long proven record. Most any would work, but for long term use I believe the 870 and 37 will keep working after the others have given up. It is too early to tell, but the Benelli may hold up just as well or better.

You choose well..........
Why, thank you. :)

one of the main reasons I kept the 870 above others was that the barrel could be shorter without major work (12" vs. the M500a at 14").

...That's pretty short.

Once I purchased my first Winchester Model 12, I kind of stopped looking at any other pumps.

I do have to admit that I have long suffered from remorse, for not purchasing a "Matched Pair of 870 Skeet Guns" (28ga & .410), when they were offered to me some years ago.

Nova

I like the composite stock and the all-black look. New Remingotn 887 might be worth a look. But for now, my dollars go to Benelli before Remington. My Nova has never had issues (except me pulling the trigger on an empty chamber and 'missing' a duck.

Nova is a better gun than an 870 express for the same $.

My HD shotgun is a semi-auto, but my back-up is a Remmy 870 MM.

Remington 870

Not only is it a great gun, but they are made not far from where I live and I am partial to supporting the hometown company. If I was left handed I would probably order the left hand version of it...

Any of the above. It's not like there are any drastic differences in the way they operate. Learn to operate all of them.

I use my 1300 for HD because it is slicker and faster handling than my 870 which is my deer and turkey gun. Neither has ever failed to function properly.

I prefer the Mossberg 500 and 590 series because of the ergonomics and the safety location, but the Remington 870 is a good gun too. Ironically, my current 12 gauge is a Winchester 1300 Defender. It's a good shotgun in its own right, but I really don't like the location/shape of the slide release at all.
