What rifle do you prefer for PD?

I know its not a rifle, but it shoots a rifle round..... Keltec PLR-16 is my choice.
Its compact for close quarters, no stock to [strike]get in the way[/strike] aid in support & increase speed in follow up shots, and a short barrel.
There, fixed it for you :D .

I keep a .22 and a 30-30 in the truck, at home i have a marlin 357 in a corner and another 30-30 hanging in a closet. Several hanguns here and there, shotguns are locked up.....just don't use them much lately. Might have to switch that up soon.

Everybody’s situation is going to be different. Being Active Duty Army, we’ve lived in some highly populated areas where my AR was only for a zombie invasion; primary home defense was a shotgun and pistol…shotgun being the first choice.

We now live somewhat out in the country and more isolated. I keep the AR loaded by the bed, but still have the shotgun as the primary (Mossy 590). My wife also has a coach gun on her side of the bed and we both have pistols on the nightstands. I need to get one of my .22LR rifles set up with a light…I’m finding more need to dispatch threatening dogs, beaver (we have a 12 acre lake) and feral cats invading the homestead…

ROCK6

94 Winchester trapper .45 colt is always nearby, 870 rem is my first choice for at or in the house, and a scoped .243 for 'stuff trying to harm livestock, our situation is much different than most of the folks I talk to as we live way out of town and are not particularlly affected by neighbors or nearby structures

i ended up with a sks a while back(co-worker needed some cash) and even though i never realy wanted an sks it seem to spend an awful lot of time in my truck.its short light easy to handle and fairly accurate inside 100 yards and i think the 7.62x39 is a great round for short range with a large enough bullet to anchore your target.plus if this gun gets scratched or a little rust im not gonna cry about it.

I'm curious as to how many people other than LEO carry a rifle with them outside of their home.

If I'm on the family ranch, or maybe just going to be away from home for a few days, I typically have either the AR or AK with me. Last summer my AK "lived" in my trunk. It was my daily work vehicle, and we were experiencing floods unlike anything I'd ever seen before. The idea that I may one day go to work, and be unable to easily return home, became a reality. I decided that in such an event, i DID NOT want to be be unarmed, or even armed with a handgun alone. While never in a situation where it was even remotely needed, knowing I had a weapon and a few hundred rounds of ammo with me at all times was a comfort.

Mossberg 500 for me. I do carry a lever action 44 magnum in the trunk of my car, but that's mainly in case of spontaneous anarchy.

AR-15 with Hornady TAP FPD or Black Hills Mk 262 Mod 1 currently. I'd feel comfortable with any reliable rifle I'm proficient with, and have ammo properly selected for the task.

What prevents you from using a rifle at short ranges too?

Why would you choose a pistol over a rifle?

If you're defending yourself with any firearm then the excrement has hit the fan. Why would you advocate a pistol over a rifle to save your hide?

What leads you to write that?

This subject has been discussed at length here, so much so that the mods stickied one particularly good thread on the topic:

>>>"Overpenetration" and rifle rounds--the myth that won't die
for hard/tough materials with strong bonds among molecules, like steel or body armor, bullet size is the key, speed doesn't matter much. just like to punch a hole in steel you want to use nail, not hammer

for soft materials with weak bonds among molecules, like water or flesh, bullet speed is the key, size doesn't matter much. water hit by high speed bullet will not have enough time to yield and move away, so water behave as hard as concrete

that's why small and fast bullet like 5.56 could penetrate armor better than big and slow handgun bullet, while disintegrate faster in fresh, that's how i see it

I always reach for my Crossman or Gamo air rifles for home defense purposes.

Squirrels can be quite a nuisance and I've always had good luck scaring them away from the yard with a shot in the buttocks.

One more thing I wanted to add regarding the use of a rifle in a defensive scenario, particularly an AR inside a home, is the sound. Now I completely understand and agree with the argument that your life is more valuable than your hearing, but when there are other effective options that would cause considerably less permanent hearing damage, I think it should at least be considered. Obviously this doesn't apply if you have a suppressor.

Much like the conventional wisdom myth of rifle over-penetration the conventional wisdom of rifles being louder than shotguns is also a myth. Back in October of '11 I found a very enlightening link on scientific testing of firearm noise levels*.

Some examples include: Average .380 ACP pistol (157.7 dB) is 2.2 dB louder than an average 55 grain commercial load out of a .223 with 18" bbl. without muzzle device (155.5 dB). Commercial 12 gauge loads out of an 18" bbl. shotgun average 161.5 dB. Obviously a 16" bbl, and a muzzle device are going to increase the sound pressure of a .223.

The point, though, is that any centerfire cartridge firearm's sound pressure is well above the 140 dB threshold for instant hearing damage: Even the lowly .25 ACP averages 155.0 dB!

*Sound pressure data testing information sourced from http://www.freehearingtest.com/hia_gunfirenoise.shtml. Extensive tables at same link.

For home or personal defence:

  • 1st choice - Semiauto pistol in 9mm or 40S&W or 45ACP (Glock 21)
  • 2nd choice - Semiauto or pump shotgun in 12ga (Mossberg 590)
  • 3rd choice - Semiauto rifle in 5.56×45mm or 7.62×39mm (S&W M&P 15)

The castle doctrine in Kentucky gives a lot of leeway for the property owner.

I've lived in Kentucky my entire life and I passed the CCW exam with a 100% score. I was unaware we have a castle doctrine in Kentucky.

Mossberg 500 next to the bed , wasr10/63 in the closet safe for more demanding situations (zombies etc...)..........

First time posting, please be kind.

Next to my bed I have a mossberg 535, no plug 000 buck 3'' magnums with a bandoleer that has 5 shots of 00 2 3/4'' buck.

My CCW/favorite is a cz-75 B .40S&W and goes with me everywhere, 24hours a day.

My wife has a Taurus 1911 in a lockbox in her drawer that she keeps in her car when she is out.

This is going to get lots people mad but I really love my Hi-point carbine .40S&W and does everything I ask of it. Its accurate and been 100% reliable for around 1000 rds Ive put through it so far. It is tucked in the corner and ready to go all the time. Those are my SD guns.

Fun/hunting/plinking guns don't count on that list for me.

Thanks

CZweasel, welcome to THR! We're an opinionated lot here, and the debates can get heated. I think that's because we all genuinely want other members & non-member readers to have the best info we can give. We're passionate because we understand the stakes of using lethal force for protection, and the importance of being safe gun owners. We may disagree, but we do our best to be civil about it.

We actually have quite a few members here who like their Hi-Point carbines. If it works for you, use it. There's nothing wrong with your 535 shotgun either. If you can handle the recoil of those 3" magnum buck loads, and still get fast follow up shots more power to you.

I hope you stay, and keep jumping into the conversations here.

ok ok ...if it has to be a rifle for hd i would prefer a pcc (pistol caliber carbine)... i have cx4 in 9mm to match the pistol, but i think a pcc in a .45 would be an awesome hd rifle...
