Yesterday I acquired a NIB S&W 642-1 lockless. Now I find that my HKS 36W nor my Safariland speedloaders will fit it. What brand and model loader will fit this gun? BTW, what happened to the 642 club thread?

Don't yell at me too much.

One BIG reason why your swpeedloader doesn't fit, is the left side grip has not been machined low enough to allow total clearance.

The S/L may get to the cylinder, but getting it back out, catches on the grip panel.

So, as a fast fix, either TUFFSTRIPS or Bianchi speed strips will work just fine.

How do I know this? I own a Taurus 850CIA (642-ish), and the factory grip is not cut down on one corner, catching any S/L I use. So, I use speed strips.

NOT MAXFIRE Loaders, please. You have a nice, new snubby. You don't want to stress the crane assembly.

Smith and Wesson's latest choice of grip does not lend itself well to much of any speedloader. They have changed over the years on the j frames. Speedloaders will work, if you force it.

I switched to a Houge Bantam grip and I am quite satisfied. It is about the same dimensions as the factory "fishscale" grip, so conceilability is unchanged. Texture is grippier in the hand, but does not hang up on clothes as much as one would think. And my HKS speedloaders work exactly as they are supossed to!

Thanks, mboe794. You are right. I removed the grips and the loaders worked like a charm. I "happened " to have a set of Uncle Mike's boot grips that were taken from my cute little M37 and they went on the 642. Now the loaders work.
S&W should have done their homework.
