What the Heck is Wrong with People?

Shot a lot of magnum rifles and such without problems or even thinking about my ears.
So has a gentleman named John Taffin.

Yeah, THAT John Taffin. He acknowledges that he's half deaf (probably more like three-quarters by now, I spoke with him once and that had to be five years ago) due to not wearing ear protection while shooting. When was your last hearing test?

It really just boils down to a simple fact. The general American public is pathetically stupid.

American Idol's popularity, and Oprah's wealthy career are proof of this fact.

Never associate with the general public, unless you absolutely have to.

i think of it as bad parenting and part of natural selection, if your too dumb to not wear hearing protection, and want to lose some hearing in diffrent DB ranges then thats on you. But a parent should always provide for there children, esspecially the younger ones.

Stuff like this is why I have memberships at two private shooting ranges.
+1

At my club, eye and ear protection are NOT optional. We have a few extra pairs of shooting glasses and a box of disposable foam ear plugs, mostly for visitors.

I used to shoot on the Fort Knox public range and had a problem there once with civilians shooting with people downrange.

One of the Cleveland area "supervised" commercial ranges is a nightmare. I've had guns pointed (unintentionally) at me and seen people wrestling over loaded shotguns there. They've had more than one person rent a gun in order to commit suicide. I NEVER shoot there anymore. If I want to shoot at 7 yards, I drive all the way to Lorain to do it.

Me confused. Are there no ROs at the ranges you guys go to? You show up at any of the ranges i go to without eyes and ears, and you will not be able to shoot period. Club rules are eyes and ears on at all times when at the range, and they enforce that. Show up with kids wearing no eyes and ears and then start shooting would probably get you kicked off club grounds if not told what an idiot you are and poor parent.

I always have some extra plugs in my "bag-o-dirty-tricks", and I double-up with stnadrd muffs, too.

When I go to the local car-race track, I have a pocketfull of them, and usually give away a bunch then, too.

All these are good reasons I use a semi private range! I stappoed using a public range about three years ago when I found one thru a freind where we do three gun comp at the range, but am happy now that it is filled with real gun people. Not idiots who "have a gun" if you knwo what I mean. Even though, my public range I use to go to was OK in that they had ROs who knew and enforced safety regs because it was a city range. Unfortunately a few of the ros thought they knew everything about guns and were scary stupid.

I would not call these people stupid but they do lack common sense. Many of those people around. I have only seen it a few times at the local range. Usually it older gentlemen (60+) who are accustomed to not wearing any hearing protection. The damage has already been done so it makes little sense to them to wear hearing protection. The others its probably a learned trait from their fathers who probably never wore hearing protection. Luckily I have yet to see any kids at the range who did not wear hearing protection. If I did I would hand them some extra ear plugs.

tkarter, post #10

There's a real wealth of material on THR that makes it clear that unprotected shooting can lead to cumulative hearing loss.

You have a right to smoke, drink, go bungee jumping, or shoot unprotected.

Just as long as you know that these all have risks, and as long as you don't try to sell that kind of conduct to others, or complain later that someone should have protected you from your own choices, then what you do in your life is very much your own business.

I'd hate to see someone watching you get the idea that what you're doing is a good, or even okay, practice.

Just as a friendly suggestion: whenever you are shooting where others can see you, it would set a good example to them for you to use standard protections.

Go in peace.

you know people really can be stupid, this is why i like a semi-private range where you must show you have protection if not they will give you protection. really people should be encouraged to take a safety course for thier weapons, whether they retain anything is a different matter.

I know a guy

who totally turned his son into an anti.
The then 10 year old wanted to learn to shoot to go hunting
with his dad, the dad took him to the range and without even warning him
had him shoot a 7mm Remington Magnum!:banghead::fire:
The scope bashed the kid in the face and the blast rocked him.
He started crying and "dad" smacked him for that too:barf:

The now 30 something is a very liberal anti .
His dad still thinks things like that are somehow funny.

OT for a sec for an observation - Actually, I find Americans to be very intelligent; but from where I'm watching, your greatest strength can also be your greatest weakness - your freedom is itself a double-edged sword.

Example: You're taught from birth that the sky's the limit - you can do anything. Very inspiring if done correctly - but it also means that people's egos get stroked for producing/achieving absolutely squat, resulting in some folk who think that they're wonderful at everything (because they've been told so) but they've never had to really try because they'll get praised regardless whether they succeed or not. This leads to selfish people - self-obsessed arrogance in some as in "I can do anything I want - don't tell me what to do...blah, blah..."

The majority of Americans do pull their weight, do achieve, do win - and are the most pleasant, friendly, generous, welcoming folk on the planet I've ever had the pleasure to be with. The rest arguably don't deserve to be American.

Pardon the observation - just the way I see it.

I'm sorry, but that guy is not fit to be a father. Period.

And yes, in my experience, people are stupid. And I have no problem with ranges requiring eye/ear protection. Keeps some idiot from suing the range if they go deaf or blind as a result.

Honesty around here gets you called stupid pretty fast.

The majority of the folks in the neighborhood I grew up in never wore or used hearing protection. Other than standing well back from behind the shooter with mouth wide open.

I worked in a factory 20 years that had a 100 DB noise level all the time too. 4 years of that hearing protection became available and mandated. I wore it appreaciated it.

Yes do wear hearing protection.

I have always enjoyed shooting and have a ton of it under my belt all safely.

Not using hearing protection doesn't make you point a firearm in an unsafe direction.

I like my music loud too.

I'm for the "Kick em off the range for HANDLING FIREARMS while people are downrange" rule.

+1 At the range where I shoot, you have to have the gun unloaded, the action open and be behind the firing line (no sitting at the bench tinkering with stuff) unless you are downrange putting up targets.

Some people at my club wear hearing protection whenever there is shooting, but I only use them when shooting. But this is trap I'm talking about. Rifles? yeah I always wear plugs around rifles and generally pistols too.

I've got a friend who doesn't own any guns, but isn't anti-gun. He is however from New York (supports Rudy "Il Duce" Giuliani) and has some odd and uninformed ideas about guns. He thought it would be good to let his kid shoot a 12ga. shotgun without any training to speak of so that he'd be scared by the noise and recoil. Fortunately, he never got around to it.

Sorry?

Did I miss something?

I noted that shooting unprotected is a bad idea.

I noted that it is nonetheless your right.

I suggested it would be nice to set a good example.

I don't have any reason to think you're stupid.

When I qualified at the range in the USAF, we had no hearing protection. I just kind of thought that enduring loud, punishing noises was part of the whole war experience.

I'm pretty sure that none of the guys who went before me used hearing protection either (except, possibly, guys in tanks and flight deck staff).

Once I discovered that good quality noise protection is cheap -- and sold pretty much everywhere that guns and ammo are -- I made it part of my regimen.

Just in case it's not clear: if you're a shooter, it is my default position that you're smarter than the population average.

It is possible to override that default position, but you really have to work at it.
