I have been recently wanting an AR 15 for some unknown reason. I have a Bulgarian AK 47 and a Tactical Mini 14, that shoots <2MOA. If I trade/sell off either I would be able to afford an AR 15. Here is the question is it worth it to trade/ sell off either of these fine firearms for an AR15.

Personally I would ditch the Mini 14....nothing against them, but they fill about the same niche as AR. Not that having 2 similar guns is a bad thing, but I like diversity. Keep the AK, ammo is still (relatively) cheap compared to other centerfire for blasting away, and just something cool about them.

Or keep the Mini and sell the AK. That way you'd consolidate calibers. That's what I'd do. But nothing against the AK. I know I'd rather have 2 of the same gun and one kind of ammo. If one were to go out, you'd still be shooting.

Have you ever fired an AR? Shoot 'em both side by side. You may like the mini better.

I am more fond of the Mini myself, but if you want an AR, and decide to sell one, the Mini would be the one to ditch because the roles overlap.

:)

Go shoot an AR. I like them. I used to be in the army (no combat) and a have a little prior experience with one. I have shot civ versions and liked them.

But if you like the mini, have plenty of reliable mags, and you like the mini keep it. Or spend the money on lots of ruger mags for it. OR spend the money on ammo.
Don't let anyone tell you that the gun you like isn't worth the money.
I bought one gun before without any shooting anything like it before. I was very dissappointed. That's the only gun I don't regret selling off.
Is your mini a new 580 series?

If you have a Mini that shoots that well, I'd keep it. And keep the AK, too.

You aren't loosing anything by not going with an AR.

Take the advice of others and actually shoot the AR. If you like it, your decision may be easier. If you don't like it, which I personally do NOT like the AR platform, your decision is even easier yet.

The mini has so much going for it compared to the AR. Hold them both and shoot them both, and see which you like.

I'm late to the party, but I would keep both and save up for the AR. I have an AR and I want a mini!

I have decided to hold on to my Mini 14 and save my pennies for an AR 15 at a later date.

I think thats the right way to go! Nothing like sellers regret!

Just as an aside, you could buy an AR-15 stripped lower reciever and build up your own AR-15 just the way you want it. The actual registered part is the stripped lower reciever, so by building it yourself, you'd save the 11% federal excise tax on the rest of the parts. I'd buy the upper reciever assembled and head spaced (and shipped straight to your house) and just build the lower receiver if I were doing it. I have built three lowers from stripped lower recievers and I'm not what you would call mechanically inclined. You can find detailed instructions on the internet, AR-15.com has them I believe. Build it the way you want it as funds allow. Or, you could buy a complete lower reciever and then order the upper when funds are available.

Thank you D Boone and bpl. That is the route I think I am headed. buy the stripped lower and than put the upper of my choice on it. I just ordered a new stock and a flash hider for my mini so that I can make it look the way I want.

i learned a hard lesson a few years ago. never sell a firearm that you like & that shoots well. it took me a few years to fix that blunder but i finaly did last year. i think you made the right choice.
