My Sig 229 has some tiny rust spots on the rear top of the slide. Since this is a Stainless Steel on Nitron finish, what can I use to remove the rust without affecting the finish?

thanks,

" Stainless steel on Nitron finish "?? Are you sure it's stainless steel ? Anyway light rusting is best removed with fine 0000 steel wool and a good gun oil.

Yes, the Sig 229 is a Stainless with Nitron finish

Yes the 229 has a stainless steel slide with a nitron finish.

Will this wool scratch off the nitron finish?

Only prob with steel wool - it can embed miniscule steel particles - those then too can rust.

I would use a very light pressure with softest Scotchbrite material - with dish soap as lubricant. Phosphate is a good rust neutralizer/inhibitor but not sure what would happen with use here - discoloration probably. If careful polishing of area does ameliorate the problem then keep it protected after with Boeshield or CLP film - or RIG etc.

Others may have better schemes.

Ballistol might work. I've used it to remove rust with fair to excellent results on old blued guns and stainless knife blades. Apply, wait awhile, scrub with rag, repeat.

IGNORE ALL PREVIOUS ADVICE. THAT RUST HAS RENDERED YOUR GUN UNSAFE TO FIRE.

Send it to me immediately for proper disposal.

It's for the children.

I have had sucess using the green scotchbrite pads and a lot of oil. lightly go over the spot with the pad and it should take it away without too much damage to your finish. polish as required.
