Is there a certain platform or platforms that you've had experience with that you liked?
Anything easier to suppress than others?
Was sighting an issue?
Good feel of balance?
Reliability issues?

I'd love to hear any experiences you have and why you recommend that particular handgun.
Please feel free to answer any or all questions, or throw out ideas I didn't think of.

Thank you!

I have used the little Walther, easy because it is already threaded. Ruger mark 3 barrel I threaded and remounted the front sight (a lot more work) and I liked the Walther a little better even though I don't like the tiny grip (but the kids do), teenagers like the TEK-22, what do they know...

I bought and extra barrel for my AA glock .22 rimfire slide, made an adapter for it up to 1/2-28 and quit searching, just right for me and very light, almost feels fake.

For rifles I have a few 10-22's, an SBR and a 16". The 77-22 is very quite, with CB longs it feeds fine and makes more noise when you dry fire it than when actually firing. If they have a choice kids pick the Cmmg upper on an AR.

If anything I think a suppressor makes them run better But they get dirty faster.

My Walther P22 was/is an awesome host, it fed all types of junk ammo reliably. Brought replacement front sight posts, and comes threaded from factory, just needed adapter.
I haven't warmed up to the Sig Mosquito as a host.

My Ruger 22/45 with a PacLite upper is awesome too. Very light, very balanced, and very accurate, but I think more of that is the upper itself. It also feeds all ammo fine. The Ruger feels better in my hands than the P22.

And I've also put my suppressor on my buddy's Ruger 22/45 Lite model with factory threaded barrel and it works very well as well.
One overall advantage of those Rugers is that they have a rail for easy mounting of a red dot/optic.

Rifles, I have a 22 LR AR-15 upper built around a Ciener conversion kit. It suppresses well. I have 2 integrally suppressed 10/22s. One just look like a bull barrel, the other one is more overt. I need to thread my bolt 22s. That should be fun.

JMorris, I like the idea of Glock 22 conversion as a host. Now, I have to go look at my kit.

My original host is a Ruger 22/45 with a threaded barrel. My version has no iron sights and a top rail, so sighting was not an issue. It has a fairly short barrel so the can does not make it awkwardly long. My suppressor is fairly lightweight. It had been reliable but the last time I took it out I began having some issues. The gun gets dirtier when run with the suppressor and I think my less than texbook cleaning regimen caught up with me. The Ruger is a bit of a pain to disassemble so I guess this all factors into its "rating" as a suppressor host.

My second host is a GSG-1911-22. It comes with a threaded barrel but I had to purchase an adaptor to be able to attach the suppressor. The sights clear my suppressor just fine (my can is an Innovative Arms Apex). Suppressors vary in size so this may not be true for all brands. The GSG has a reputation as a quiet host. It is quieter than my Ruger. The GSG is a full sized 1911 so it looks long with the can mounted but the balance is fine. So far the gun as been as reliable suppressed as unsuppressed. Since it's relatively easy to field strip (two steps more than a standard 1911) it will be easier to keep it clean. I paid less for the GSG, if that means anything.

Walther P22 and Ruger 10/22 are easy to suppress and fun too. The Beretta 21A, properly threaded, can be a fun little zipper. The Tec-22 looks like it will work, but the one I've played with was a complete and utter POS, even by POS standards. I'd like to try the Ruger 22/45 sometime soon.

ruger 22/45 lite with a threaded barrel and a sparrow suppressor. gets dirty fast.

I recently did a barrel change on my 10/22 takedown with an SBX barrel. The barrel is 12" but has a shroud to keep it from being an SBR. The sparrow goes inside the shroud sticking out only about half an inch.

The 10/22 with subs is totally silent. Even with supers it is ridiculously quiet.

It is on on the 22/45 but awesome on the 10/22

I did something similar for my 10/22. Thinking I cut and threaded the barrel at around 10 inches then made a shroud out of 1018 tubing and with some machining and welding made it permanent so its just over 16".

High Standard Victor.
The Victor was built for S.V. .22s, so all stay subsonic.
Simple to turn down the slab sided barrel in a lathe.

Nice accurate pistol that I use with an Ultra Dot.
Due to it's relatively heavier weight, I have a cheap camera tripod for younger shooters to rest it on.

I also have the P-22 for small stature beginners (can't bring myself to call it a Walther)
but cannot recommend it to anyone.
I only keep it because I can't bring myself to sell it. Too honest.

I am using AAC M4-2000 on most of my 22s and 223/5.56.

22 Pistols: Ruger SR22, Ruger 22/45 walther,

22 rifles: Savege Mark II, Sig522

And all of the 556 long guns (sigs, scars, tavor, and 223 bolt guns)

One stamp does it all.

Good thread as I am looking for a dedicated suppressed 22. I have a couple of rifles and a pistol that I slap a silencer on for giggles (S&W and 10/22), but I want one that is always suppressed.
The M&P 22 is the best for cycling different ammo.

I had the m&p 22. After it started shooting full auto I had it fixed and sold it. It was a nice rifle but I am very sensitive to a failures in the firearm, zero tolerance..... especially if this gun is for my kid.

If you are looking to get a good semi-auto 22 rifle, I would recommend 10/22 or sig522

The OP is in California, so simply having a pistol or rifle with a threaded barrel is illegal for him. A suppressor for a California resident is a dream, so Im not going to waste time making a long, thought out post about which host is better.

Sorry

Using a SWR Spectre II I have a few host firearms but my favorite is the bolt action Savage MKII FVSR. Using CCI Standard velocity it is quieter than my kids Red Ryder BB gun! All you hear is the firing pin and the bullet hitting the back stop.

Also a Ruger MKIII 22/45 Lite with red dot, never used the factory sights so I cant comment there, however it is a ridiculously AWESOME handgun to shoot! Almost no perceived recoil and hardly any muzzle rise. The kids love it on the Ruger SR-22. No sight issues with that as well.

I have two suppressed handguns in that caliber-ish, a .22lr Browning Buck Mark with a 10" barrel which I've had threaded, and an FNH Five Seven pistol which, while not rimfire, is roughly a .22 cal, I bought a threaded barrel for it.

I like them both and find they shoot a tad better (accurate) suppressed although I'd be hard pressed to furnish any quantitative evidence of that since I'm just getting into them both.

Suppressed, the Buck Mark is very quiet, the FNH 57 is quieter.

Suppressor is a Kestrel-core Huntertown Arms Guardian 22.

On a down side, I tried suppressing a Ruger SR22, it was a disaster. Even though it was factory threaded I could not hit the broad side of a barn with my can on it. Just about everyone I know who shoots .22 cal suppressed loves their SR22s, I must have bought a bad one.

Psssss----- dong...... Psssss-----dong

M&P .22 Pistol full size or compact will run 500 plus rounds without being cleaned and still function. Sig 522 is a good choice as well.

Thank you very much for your contribution to this thread.
Did the thought ever occur to you that I have plans of moving in the future and want to get a head start on reading up?
Perhaps I have more than one residence?
That others may find themselves into this discussion and have the very same question? Oh wait, that's already happened!
Or maybe I just like the subject at hand and wish to learn about it?

Why must there always be one in every thread?

It's not a good idea to shoot .22 through a 5.56 can like the M4-2000. The .22 ammo will leave lead deposits that will gum up your can and will be virtually impossible to clean out. Some of that lead might come out when you shoot 5.56, but then you'll have bits of lead flying around inside the can damaging your baffles.

^^^^^^^^
On top of that when you add the weight the m4 2000 and it's QD mount the weight more than triples that of the average .22 rf can. That Ruger mk III
must be muzzle heavy for sure.

I bought 2 .22LR suppressors from Innovative Arms here in SC. The first is a screw-on suppressor that I usually shoot on a Ruger SR22. It works great and has been a really fun gun to use for teaching younger kids. The second is a integral S&W M&P15-22. This is an amazing gun. Regular bulk ammo is subsonic in this gun so it's insanely quiet. The action is basically all you hear. I love shooting steel with it at the range.
