What was your favorite Shotgun

Lotsa mentions of those store branded guns made by High Standard. Some of those High Standard pumps are so smooth, effortless and quick to pump that they are a joy to use. Got a non store branded, High Standard 12 ga. Model K1211 here that I've had for decades. I have other shotguns dedicated for one specific purpose like a slug gun, a turkey gun, and an O/U for busting clays. Many years ago before the specific purpose shotguns came into my life the old High Standard was my "do it all" shotgun. Because it was my only shotgun other than a single shot 16 ga. and it has done everything from clays and small game up to deer. Still going strong and this coming year I plan to hit the sporting clays course with it just for the fun of such a fast, effortless, second shot on doubles with a pump gun. This one has probably been involved in more different types of hunting and shooting sports than all my other shotguns combined... IMG_1914.JPG ... IMG_1918.JPG ...

Ithacas - doggone it!:cuss:

All you sumbits'es who had the sense to keep your Eye-thack-as really make me feel the fool.

I think I've only had two Ithacas and VERY foolishly sold both.

Young guys take note.
If they come your way, look long and hard at Hi Standards and Ithacas before letting them pass on.

Todd.

I also recently picked up a JC Higgins Model 20 (1958). Very robust solid shotgun, weighing 8 lbs, fixed 30" barrel. They're known to snap the action arm at the bend, and mine upon disassembly was welded back on. Slick action that has the build quality of a Win Model 12 and Rem Model 31 and good ergonomics. This evolved into the Mossberg 500.

But with that said, I still love the Ithaca M37 Featherlight. It's like a magic wand and dream to carry in the field.

One thing I've realized is that I prefer plain round barrels to vent ribs now. Lighter to carry and with a proper cheek weld, your eye looking down the receiver just sees the bead floating on top.

My favorite shotgun to date is my current Browning Citori Upland 12ga.
I swapped the straight grip English stock for a regular sporter stock, and that changed the gun from a...meh I'll shoot it cause it's all I got, into something I actually really like the feel of.

I have an old Remington 1100 LT20 that my Dad got me for my 15th birthday back in 1983. Modified barrel, 28" vent rib. I still take it out and shoot it from time to time. Killed my first deer with it, and hundreds of barn pigeons, sparrows, starlings, squirrels, woodchucks, dove, ducks, geese, pheasants. Was what I learned to shoot skeet with when I was 21 years old. Ran my first 25, 50 and 75 with it, mod barrel and all, with only about 4000 targets under my belt at the time during my first year skeet shooting. It drove the good ole boys crazy that had been at it for years and years.

Favorite shotgun I ever owned would be my circa late '70s Remington Model 870 12 gauge with a 28" vent rib barrel and a 20" slug barrel with rifle sights. This was my do everything shotgun from hunting to home defense.

Favorite shotgun I ever shot was an Ithaca Model 37 20 gauge with a 26" plain barrel. Light as a feather with a slick pump action as all get out, this old shotgun never missed a beat!

By far, my Ithaca 37 is my favorite. I have a 28" modified barrel and a 20" rifle sight smoothbore barrel. Unfortunately, it only has 2 3/4" chamber and the choked barrel, so its not as good as my Mossberg 930 with screw-in chokes, that I use for turkeys. So the Ithaca is pretty worthless, except as a dove gun. But its still my favorite.

A single shot 12 ga newport with a 20" barrel that i had to cutdown barrel had a bulge at the end my older brother gave it to me when I was 12 wish I still had it if i ever come across one i will probably buy it

Sentimentally it's a tie: the Model 12 16 Ga my Grandfather left me. I killed mourning doves, bobwhite quail and fox squirrels with it while traipsing around the ranch as a kid is one... a Remington 1100 Trap 30" 12 Ga that I bought from a good friend who took his own life a few years ago is the second.

Usefulness, another tie: the BPS 20 Ga and the 1100 LT-20 are both great, handy shotguns that fill most of my shooting needs.

Stay safe.

My first shotgun was a Mossberg 500, second a S&W 916. Don't have those anymore but do have a 500 Mariner that I like. My favorite is a Browning Superposed.

After a dad's stroke I was looking for his Parker and could not find it, he GAVE it away I was told so it took me 3+ yrs to get it back, I finally did a 200 mile drive after work and got it back home it had not even been used and was given away another time, I was very lucky, many stories with that Parker in my life. One very odd thing it is a 32" full and full hammerless with extractors locks up tight like new but no more wear on top lever left, dad was very lacking with lube.

My sentimental favorite is my dad's Remington 870 with a 30" full choke barrel. I mention the barrel because that was the way my dad always introduced his shotgun. I will never forget a pheasant hunt when I and 3 other guys killed 15 pheasants; I killed 13 of them with the 870. After the first few birds I would give the others first shot before I would shoot. It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime hunts, for which my buddies will never forgive me and I'll never forget. That was 50 years ago and that old shotgun still kills turkeys, it is now being shot by my dad's oldest grandson.

My favorite shotgun of all time is the one I have carried with me all over the world wing shooting. The PH calls it the Killing Wand. It is a 20ga Browning Citori 525 Sporting gun, 32” ported barrels, adjustable comb, 15.25” pull. It is light, very quick and very deadly on pigeons, doves and sporting clays.

We went to the RSA pigeon shooting it was a tough week, got to Joberg on Sunday and the guns did not arrive in Free State from Paris until Thursday night. When we left, on our way out, we stopped at a truck stop mid way to take a break and get a cold drink. As I got out of the van, I saw the Assistant PH a short distance away, getting out of his van that had come the other way with a group from Norway and I heard one hunter say, “you promised to introduce us to him. “ So on my way to the restroom I walked by the group, the Asst PH said “this is the guy, that shot 1750 Rock pigeons in one day.” That is how my Citori got its nick name and I got delayed on my way to the restroom.

A shot gun can make many memories, more than most guns, in my experience. When you stand in front of your racks look and see what you see.

Pump is also my first shotgun. Was well used when it came my way, a Mossberg 600ct 20ga. Slicker than a greased booger.

Single is my most recent shotgun purchase... a chopped down “white powder wonder” made by crescent. It’s a 16ga and it is heavy enough to know your holding a gun and be smooth but light and small enough to go anywhere. It makes me want a similar modern 20ga

semiauto, easily the cheapest semiauto I have ever ran across. Walmart had a sale on Charles Daly semiauto 12ga when they changed stock design. It was great. I sold it in a fit of stupidity.
