I've handled a 20 ga. Nice light upland gun, neat action, but the action is very slow. The sliding breech does take about a pound off. The one I held (at a gun show) was about 5.5 pounds. Not terribly expensive either. Of course, the 28 would be.
Old gent at my gun club (well older than me)buys old SxSs from all over and bought from Rock Island auctions. Sweet 20 gauge, and that toggle action is definitely unique

for a lot of years another 70s, 80s ithica pump gun fan. they were 3 inch guns, one had truchoke tubes from the factory. most of got old, slow/bent up and heavier,(me not the guns)
...nowadays a made in new haven Winchester super x model 1 trap gun, and a 30 inch citori work best for me. dc

Ithaca 37,remington model 12 and model 500 Mossberg the first two I learned to shoot ducks with. they are my dads. I don't think he has either anymore. But the 500 was the first I bought myself and its like part of my arm. after 20 years its not a smooth as the two older guns. but its been through a lot and keeps on shooting.
The Remington Model 12 is a pump action .22. Winchester, perhaps?

I had an old High Standard pump gun. 20" barrel and open choke. The action was so sluck on this gun, if you pionted the muzzle straight up, (empty, no rounds) and hit pushed the release button on the trigger housing, the pump would slide down on its own. Was a great HD shotgun, was an idiot for trading it off.

Back in the very early 80's I bought a savage 775, had 2 barrels long and short, and a original stock and a homemade pistol grip. I took it home and shot it in all Configurations, and being the young buck I was ended up leaving it in the pistol grip/ short barrel setup. That (Boom Stick) rode in the back window of my truck and followed me everywhere.

What it was to be young and naive, was pulled over by many police for many different reasons and none even asked about it...as I found out many years later, a 17 inch barrel is a big no no...big fine/prison time. :what: I had lost track of the long barrel and stock thru the many moves in my younger days so I just hid it and forgot about it for a couple of decades.

I found it about 8 years ago in a large rubbermaid trash can that I stored old and long tools I rarely... if ever would use. Kinda rusted a little but not bad. Cleaned and oiled her up, took her out on the boat and proceeded to run 10 rounds of slugs into the water. Needless to say...she still shot good, but me not being the fierce young warrior any more...my teeth hurt, gums were bleeding, both elbows and the left wrist were throbbing, lost my favorite hat. I turn around and the wife is screaming at me about something but I can't hear her. She later tells me that I had the biggest smile, biggest eyes, blood running down my lip and fire came out of the barrel about a foot...she liked it, and me:)
Brought it home, hid it, and began scavenging parts from ebay to bring her back to life. Over the years I found a long barrel with a polychoke. Bent but useable, 50 bucks, a stock from a 1100 for 40 bucks, I liked the grip on the 1100 and was sure I could modify it to work(decided that if browning could make a ugly humpback...so could I) , eventually found a poly choke base that I could solder on and make my 17 inch barrel legal again, limbsaver pad for the stock (some of you might have seen that thread, still smell burnt rubber) Long story shor:cool:t... WALAA... my illegal boomstick is now legal and whole again after 40 years.

Yes, from the day I bought it it had a scope mount on it, looks like it was a factory install, I took it off right away and polished the aluminum when I got it, so I had to recreate with old scope mounts and rings what it might look like. Aside from mounting a removable strap for hunting, she's at home and not hiding anymore.

Iv'e had quite a few Mossbergs in my time but i have to admit and alot of you will laugh but my all time smoothest operating shotgun was my dads JC Higgins model 20 made by Hi Standard sold by Sears Roebuck this today is the smoothest operating of all i have encountered how bout you whats your favorite??

My favorite shotgun of all time would have to be my “Ted Williams” 12 gauge from Sears and Roebuck. It has a poly-choke on the barrel. If I could only have one gun....that’s the one I would choose. You can dial up your desired shot spread and it fires slugs accurately out to 100 yards. I simply love that gun.

Ive only owned three shotguns but my Remington 870 Wingmaster, 28-inch, modified choke, plain barrel (no vent rib) has been my companion since the early 70's. Done with it nearly all that can be done with a shotgun including holding my own in local trap shoots against shotguns costing well over twenty times the $120 I paid for it.
I don't know how many rounds I have shot with it but it looks like new & shows no sign of wearing out anytime soon.

Here is my favorite: An Old Savage Model 430 Over/Under 16 Gauge, best bird gun I've ever shot. Wish I could find another 16 OR 20 Gauge. This gun had 26" barrels with Improved Cylinder & Modified Choked. The guns today do not seem to be up to par to these old inexpensive but very well made shotguns.

I don't think I have a favorite but I do have one that I enjoy quite a bit over others, maybe because most of my 20ga are break open or I built an extended mag tube so it holds 9 shells but the LT 1100 is fun.

A prewar Browning superposed trap gun. 1938, just out before the war. Perfect balance, great wood, and a Browning blueing. Busted 1000's of clays, lots of Pheasants, ducks and geese ( pre lead ban), squirrels, and a couple of unlucky quail.

I, like a lot of you here, have a bunch of shotguns I LOVE. That being said, if I had to pick a FAVORITE, I think hands down it would be my Ithaca Model 66 in 20ga. It's the only shotgun I have that absolutely hits everything I try to shoot. I attribute this to the way it fits me. For whatever reason, none of my other shotguns can match that ability. It also cost me nothing, as it was given to my brother-in-law by an ex-girlfriend's father, and he, not being a "gun guy", gave it to me.
