What would you get for $200?

EXCEPT FOR A 44 MAGNUM and SOME 357 magnum; no other traditional self defense hand gun can touch it.
That's not quite true. The .357 SIG and the 10mm, and some probably-dangerous-to-fire 9mm exceed it's energy. You also have to take in to account the 7.62x25 only launches an 80 grain or so bullet.

A used S&W Model 10 or Military & Police. A few years ago I got a very finish worn M&P for less than $200. It required a minor timing fix that probably ran me $25. It was safe to shoot without it.

$200 is a little tight but....

Your best bet is going to be in the used market. A good used revolver in 38 or 357 might still be the best deal going. Don't shy away from names like Taurus, Charter arms or even Rossi, at least guns that have been produced in the last ten years or so. In the Semi auto category I would have to say that your choices are much more limited. Kel-Tec is the one exception. You can get into a new Kel-tec 380 for right around $250 and their P-11 for $300. If you can find one used at the right price, jump on it.

Just yesterday, I saw two (2) P11's for just over $200. The used Buckmarks were three bills, as were the used 22/45s.

Save up $200 more dollars and buy my Springfield XD Subcompact 40S&W with Meprolight Trudot night sites and XML tac light.

Shes a little used; however its better then most options at the price.

I'd go with the Tokarev, they are within the price range. They are the next thing to indestructable and are quite accurate and reliable. I had one Chinese Model 213 in 9mm Luger that I bought in 1992 for $89. I ran over 55,000 rounds through that pistol without a single hiccup. I've bought a bunch of $35 9mm barrels and converted the 7.62x25 to fire both 9mm Luger and 9x23 Winchester. You can't beat the quality for the price.

Depending on what he intends to do at the range a 22 would be hard to beat. If centerfire the P64 would be a great option (I really enjoy both of mine) and the ammo is available and inexpensive. Something a little larger would be the TTC's that are priced right at $200 and ammo for them is very cheap and the gun is larger frame.

Think about a Charter Arms. Good guns, and better
than the price indicates.
Also, the Rossi is ok, for a snubbie.

Then there are the Cobra 38spl and 9mm derringers.

Prices on Bersa and other more popular guns will vary from place to place.
I've seen used Bersa's as high as $350, and new ones as low as $299.

If there is a range close, talk with them, you never know
what they might have lurking in a drawer.

Good luck with your search

Last S&W I bought at a pawn shop I paid $175 for. Model 10 with 5 inch barrel. Finish is a bit worn.

Seek and you will find. I do believe options exist.

I'd probably get a Heritage Rough Rider. Mine has been pretty great for the low price.

depends on your need.... a single shot shotgun fits a need, a semi-auto .22 fits a need... the FEG (walther clone....sorta) fits another need... and all well within your 200 dollar limit.

I would avoid the high-points.... just my opinion.

I bought a almost mint ruger p 85 mII FOR 225.00$ or a little rough rider 22 can get you started , i havent had any problems with mine.

I would try hard to find a model 10- SOG has them from time to time, with shipping and transfer it was around 217.00 but the CZ52 is hard to beat, especially a year ago when you could get the gun and a case of ammo (880) for about 200.00.

Good guns I've seen and owned recently in that price range - 9x18 Russian IJ-70 Makarov (I stole it at $125), Ruger 22/45 in the blued variety, and a Ruger SP-101 that I wound up getting for about $239. I'd buy any of them.
But the suggestion to save the money is a good one too.

I'd also consider a good .22 rifle of some persuasion if you don't have one. Or maybe a good pump action shotgun or a lever action 30-30 (Marlin).

Lessee. Guns that I've bought recently for around $200.

Romanian Tokarev, Polish Tokarev, Chinese Tokarev, CZ-52, Super Single Six Stainless, Taurus .32 Long, Ruger Mk. I Target, 2 Ruby .38 Spls, Ruger P-89, various SMLEs, 2 M/N 91/30s, Hi-Point carbine, Rem 870, and a few others that don't spring to mind.

It can be done, if you're patient, careful, and lucky.
-And yes, I am about to spring for a third security cabiner.

I bought an FEG 7.65 (.32ACP) for $89 last year--- was used, but shot pretty good, if not a little hard on the webbing..That, or a HP C9-- $159 for the pistol , $10-$12 for the extra mag, $5 for a airsoft holster at Wally World, and some ammo...
