Here, another vote for Hi-Point or a used S&W, Browning, or Ruger .22 if you're not going to conceal it, or a used Taurus revolver or SW9VE if you are.

Wouldn't carry any of the old commie pistols myself, but fine for the range, and you can still find the occasional nice Makarov or Tokarev for under $200, and could buy a pair of Nagant pistols and a box of .32 H&R Magnum with that.

I would buy an ugly looking but sweet-shooting Winchester 94. Heck, I even saw a not-too bad pre-64 model go for just that amount the other day in 32 Winchester Special. Heck, you could even pay to have it refinished and make money on it. One of the few "great" guns for which $300 can still get you a fine example.

I think you must have got two lemons in a row, A friend has one almost 2 years now and around 3000 rounds without one single problem, bought it new.
