What would you get?

If a 1911 is a good fit, then I would say get one (I would go with .45 ACP), at a price point you can afford, along with some ammo. If not then maybe a .22 semi-auto, like a Ruger MK.III or a Browning Buckmark.

I would buy another Sphinx SDP. I have the compact and it is a terrific pistol and want the smaller subcompact with the 3" barrel that will be out soon.

Magnum Research Baby Eagle .45 ACP... with a good amount of ammo.

Or a Ruger SR45 with a crap ton of ammo and accessories
Or a Spingfield XD Service with a decent amount of ammo and accessories
Or a Sig P226 Combat in 9mm
Or a.... OK I'll stop now

Two LC9s and a 1,000 124 grain plated bullets. In fact, that's what we just did. Now my wife is considering selling or trading her LC9 for an LC9s like mine.

I also think you should start with reloading. With the cost of ammunition, you should be able recoup you reloading investment and in the money savings buy another pistol along the way. I started with a Hornady Progressive reloader. Reloading also compliments your hobby of shooting. Plus with reloading, you can then make proper pressure loads for 10mm and other calibers.

If you want to be a bit different, get a 1911 in 10mm. Absolutely amazing round. With proper pressures (180gr at 1300fps) it slightly exceeds the .357 magnum in power which was arguably the best law enforcement caliber.

For $700-$900 there are tons of awesome guns. What I would get is probably different than what you would get since it depends on what you already have, and of course what you want to do with it.

That said, you might to check out the HK VP9. I really love mine. It's pretty "cheap" for an HK, too. I paid $599 for the gun with Meprolight night sights and two mags (you will probably pay more but not a lot more). It uses P30 mags, too. Great shooting gun! It's fun to shoot, accurate and very adjustable; it has three interchangeable grip panels with 3 different size panels for each for a total of 9 grip pieces (total of 27 possible combos).

It's about as big as you would ever CCW but it's doable. It's an awesome range gun, would be a good home defense gun and it's easy to shoot well. For the price you have money left for ammo or to apply towards reloading gear.

I would spend it on ammo given our current situation. Before Obama I would have said buy a reloading setup but even that's not a solution now.
