Years ago (I was 18) my two buddies and me went fishing/camping in a remote spot on the river. A friend had camped at the same spot two weeks before and when he went out, in his boat, to check his lines, someone stolid his lantern and other things at his camp.

Early morning, we decided that one of us would stay with the stuff ant I was elected. I got in the tent and kept quiet. After the sound of the boat motor died out, a guy walks up to the camp and starts looking around. I let him get up to the fire and was going to let him pick up something before showing myself.

He didn’t look back, or around as if looking at his buddies, so I figured that he was alone. Just as he bent over to pick up something, I had a change of plan (because I figured that if he did mess with our stuff, I would have to deal with him) and unzipped the tent and steeped out with a .38 in hand. The guy just about passed out!

I don’t remember what I said to the guy but I played it cool as I casually scanned him and the area I made like I was trying to secure the pistol in my waste band. I just let on like I didn’t suspect a thing. I did keep a safe distance and never took my eye off of him. We made small talk for a minuet and he made a hasty exit.

What can I say, I was a kid and didn’t have the self-confidence to confront the guy. Sometimes I lie awake at night and wish I had that morning to relive. Not that I would have shot him or anything like that, I would have let him pick up something and not been in a tent (where I couldn't see all that was going on) and I would have been confrontational, so to speak. The thing is, I can't figure out what else I could have done. We were miles from the nearest black top road; phone etc holding him would have been problematic but making an enemy and letting him go would be dangerous as well. What would you have done?

The only thing I would have done differently would have been to keep the weapon down by my side, in hand, ready to use. I would not have minced words, as the only reason for this guy approaching your camp would have been for help or for theft. Still, all things considered, you're the one with the .38! I think you did fine.

When I was 18 I would have been capable of just about the same. I would have kept the pistol hidden behind a leg or something instead of directly brandishing it, though.
