I just purchased a new G26 for lawful concealed carry purposes. Other than "keep your finger off the trigger, doofus" what advice, wisdom, or anecdotes do you have for me? I'd be interested in hearing about cleaning & maintenance, ammo choices (for carry and plinking), holsters, shooting techniques, carry techniques, trivia, sights, triggers, modifications, etc etc.

And don't tell me sell it and buy a 1911/SiG/HK/anything else. ;)

Here's my thoughts,

"Congratulations! You've just bought one of the finest CCW guns ever created."

Don't change a thing except the possible addition of night sights and Concealable Control floor plates for your 10 round magazines. Forget the plugs, extended controls, etc, etc. Buy several 17 round mags as spares, a good holster and a lot of practice ammo. Carry ammo? For me it's Speer Gold Dots, but you can't go wrong with any of the better SD ammo on the market. Stay away from the whiz bang killer rounds, like Xtreme Shock, they're garbage.

Welcome to the G26 club!

I would say, carry it for a month with the chamber unloaded. If you ever find yourself sticking your finger in the trigger guard inadvertently, sell it. Next I would say, go to the range as often as you can, and if the gun shoots low and right (reverse for a lefty), you need to practise your trigger control. Practise with the gun empty and pull the trigger without disturbing the sights. Glocks are great guns, but they are not beginners guns.

I'd say Congratulations and don't buy another gun until you've taken professional training to learn to win the fight with the gun you have.

Since you've already bought it, I won't tell you about the new S&W M&P compact. ;) With that out of the way, you need few accessories or modifications for the gun itself, except those that suit your personal preference. If you're going to carry in a belt holster, fitting a magazine with a grip extension, or purchasing an extended magazine with a finger extension that also holds two more rounds, makes it easier to get a full grasp on the gun when drawing. For times when you need max concealment you can use the flat-bases that come with it. The lack of finger support actually makes little difference when shooting it, if you curl the little finger up under the floorplate.

Re: cleaning and maintenance. If you've stripped it you will notice a copper-colored substance seemingly in every nook and cranny. This is factory anti-sieze compound to assist break-in. Just shoot it until the excess blows away. When lubricating, you don't need very much because the actual frame/slide metal contact areas are very small. Just wipe on your lube with a cotton swab.

You will need a carry system (belt, holster and magazine carrier), and a good brand of jacketed hollowpoint ammunition. There are more manufacturers of both than I have time for. Be sure to test it fully with hollowpoints as well as FMJ bullets for cheap practice, as sometimes a functioning problem may turn up with HPs that was not apparent with FMJs. Your gun should not be "ammo-sensitive," but sometimes it happens.

I'd tell them it's a bad gun, and they should give it to me. Wouldn't want to see anything happen, would we?

I've heard some absurd advice in my 49 years but this is going to go down as one of my favorites. Don't tell me, let me guess, you're one of those guys that thinks a manual safety is there to prevent an untrained user from pulling the trigger accidentally. Let me assure you, that's not the purpose, and never has been, of manual safeties. Anyone that uses a manual safety for that purpose is looking to win a Darwin award or at least have a doctor sew the hole in his foot up.

How about this instead. "If you find yourself sticking your finger in the trigger guard of ANY gun WITHOUT having the immediate intention of firing it, put the gun down and don't pick it back up until you get some good training.".

To the original poster. Carry your Glock in a quality holster, with a round in the chamber, and don't put your finger inside the trigger guard until you're ready to shoot. That applies to ALL handguns, not just Glocks. NEVER depend on a manual safety, or any safety, to keep you from accidentally pulling the trigger. No mechanical device can replace good training and technique. If you're untrained, get training. It's not that expensive and it's the most important thing you can do to become a smart gun owner and CCW'er.

Well, I love my G17, looking to add a 26 myself as the 17 is a bit large, so this is all good stuff. Except the trigger gard/sell it tripe, have to go with 3rdpig on that one.

Congratulations on selecting a fine CCW weapon.

I carry a 26 every day as well.

I carry mine is a Galco Ultra Deep Concealment IWB tuckable holster:

(everything below the red line is concealed under your pants.)

It's a great rig. About $80 I think. Worth every dime.

I use Winchester White Box value pack (100 rounds per box) through it for plinking. Gold Dot 124 grain JHP for carry.

Treat it with love (but not too much...It IS a Glock.)

Happy Glocking! :D

I would say get the New York trigger for a heavier trigger pull, stock is way to lite and dangerous IMO

If you decide to improve the trigger with a 3.5 lb connector, be sure you get the genuine Glock part, not aftermarket. (YMMV, but IMHO the NY trigger does nothing but make a mediocre trigger worse.)

The Comp-Tac CTAC is a good IWB holster for the G26. I got that after trying an Alessi IWB . . . :barf:

Congrats! Practice, to get used to the trigger, is all I can say. I shoot glocks pretty good, after alot of trigger time. I have a G19 on order, and a Milt Sparks IWB holster on order. Cant wait:D

Congrats on the 26. The trigger it came with is pefectly fine.I wouldn't put anything on a gun thought out for NYC!!! Don't change squat except the pinky extension on the floor plate. I've also used the dish soap in the sink cleaning method for the frame and it worked great.

Remember to duck when it reminds you the mag is empty. My 26 likes to send the last one in the mag right back at my forehead. My 27 has never done this, just the 26.

I won't tell you to do this, because my 26 is a range weapon only, but it usually goes well over 1,000 rds before cleaning, and only then because I feel guilty.

Well, I may not be able to add much other than +1 on most of the above. As far as cleaning, I can't remember the last time I cleaned mine and it is flawless. Not advising not cleaning but shoot it and enjoy it. I shoot a 26, 27 and 34. None have ever hiccuped.

Enjoy it. I would suggest picking up a few Glock 17/19 magazines. This way if you do need to use the gun you have a backup magazine with a decent amount of ammo.

Get a good holster as well.

And most of all enjoy it.

I get the general impression that you are all happy with my purchase and that I should shoot the darn thing.

I plan on trying the NY trigger before I buy it. I like the feel of the trigger while dry firing with snap caps (haven't been able to go to the range since I bought it), but it is pretty light.

I'll run some handloads through it with a premium bullet (Gold Dot, XTP, etc) and see what me and the gun like. I have Golden Sabers loaded in the nightstand gun. I chose those over Hornady TAP because they had less 'snap' and I grouped better with them.

The fiance said, "It's hideous. It's ugly. It's out of proportion. Why'd you buy that?" After she found out the price, I was called an idiot, amongst other things. She thinks our stainless-over-black 24/7 is much more attractive. :D

Does Glock make "extended" magazines for the G26 the way the XD Subcompact has extended mags? I know G17 and G19 mags will fit (and I want a 30-rd mag just because), but are there any that will not make the gun look weird?

I'll need an ankle holster for work (due to dress code), but I'm shopping for a "real" holster for casual dress. Something IWB, probably, but who knows. I'll scour ebay. Anyone have some used ones laying around? ;) Maybe a G26 holster and pic thread will pop up.

Pearse makes a good mag extension. If your wife thinks its ugly, just show her the XD sub compact, talk about top heavy:D
