What's the heaviest caliber that a brick wall will stop?

Up here the standard code for residential (again varying by wall particulars) is every other cell and the top run. That leaves handy hollow cells for punching through pipes and wiring.

Filling every cell is an awful lot of grout. Might as well just pour the thing.

I can break a brick with my trowell. As mentioned brick and block come in various sizes. If I was building a house to protect me from gun fire. I would do the veneer. jumbo brick for the outer, and 12" block that is gouted every course, with rebar for support. as single units neither is very strong.

I guess you could always consider some steel sheathing.
