R38S12 are the numbers on my boxes.

the ...14... is the swc, not the h.p.

Winchester 158's

There is a military surplus in Granbury Texas that sells Winchester # X38SPD 158 grs. for $13.00 per box. $23.00 seems high to me.

From a 4" or more barrel the Winnies are OK. From a 2" or 3", the Remmies are worth the price because they're more likely to expand.

The BuffBore isn't "comparable", it is significantly hotter than the Remmie. The Remmie is the mildest 158+P lead hollowpoint that still expands out of snubbies. The now out-of-production Cor-Bon version and the new BuffBore 158+P are hotter than the Remmie but aren't something I'd shoot in, for example, my older 17oz Charter Arms Undercover, not if I don't want to risk loosening it.

The BuffBore is also VERY expensive. If you have a larger and/or tougher 38spl gun, you might want to look at the Buffbore, but for most needs the Remmie is a fine round.

Thanks for the clarification Jim. At $16 and change for a box of 20, I don't think it's all that expensive. I remember reading an article about the owner of BB designing this load for the newer +P rated snubbies. Looks like the Remmie is more of a proven round, though. Especially in the penetration dept.
