What's with the .50Cal muzzles on 12ga's

It won't.

They just make them louder!

Shotguns run such low muzzle pressure a brake can have little effect.

Folks went through the Cutts Compensator faze back in the 50's & 60's and none of them can hear a damn thing now.

OK, I'm glad to know I wasn't totally wrong in my assumption. The only way I know of to properly control shotgun kick is proper stance and a decent pad on the butt. My FIL and wife asked me what they were for and all I could tell them was it was for people who don't know any better.

My only reasoning in the fact of adding one on is the simple fact that 12ga is close to .50 so they match pretty close in size. There the similarities end. I'll stick with my 12ga that I can mount my AR15 bayonet on to be Tacticool...:)

If I ever weld a bayonet lug onto it....

I have that 702 plinkster .22, sans muzzlebreak. Awesome little gun, and i cant imagine the person who decided to add a beastly muzzle break to it actually had any good reason to do so.

And yes, they're for the 5-11 wearing crowd.

Hey, I wear those khakis for work!!! They are actually pretty practical, they are made of the same material as the Columbia and North Face khakis I used to wear, but they cost half as much. Khaki 5.11 taclite pants + collared underarmor shirt = ultimate outfit, durable and comfy enough for helping friends move, but still dressy enough for church. Jeans are for fools.

Anyway, back to OP. Yeah, this is mostly for the tacticool crowd. Although as Ksmith pointed out they actually have a use, although noone ever uses them for that.

Right, like was said before, the breacher muzzle break serves a purpose and it works pretty good. I played with one once on a day training a few years back but I just couldn't conceive any reason for those big arrow shaped Barret style muzzle breaks on the end of a 12g shotgun. I just couldn't see how you could build that much speed and pressure to make the compensator work properly.
