Not being a 1911 expert, I have a very serious and baffling question:

What am I missing with the Ruger SR1911? What’s wrong with it?

From what I can gather:

American made
Lifetime Warranty
Super company with great service
Nice shooting reviews
Out the door prices UNDER $600?

I understand, there might be a wait because supply is not matching demand, but…

Is something terribly wrong or very non-1911ish about this thing?

It just seems like a “too good to be true” type price point, which normally means it is. I’m just not 1911 experienced enough to know why!

Lots of Ruger haters around, as with any other brand. Maybe it don't cost enough, that might be it, doesn't appeal to your ordinary high end 1911 owner because it isn't ostentatious enough? I'm sure that's the case with a few folks. If it don't cost 2500 bucks or more, it ain't a proper 1911. I can kinda understand that with 1911s. I owned a couple of cheap ones (I prefer "affordable") that required work to get running and still only functioned with ball. I just swore off 1911s and moved on to improved designs. I say "improved designs", because even a Glock is an evolution of the Browning locked breach design. Most autos are.

Aside from being hard to find right now, I haven't seen or heard anything bad about the SR1911. I have a dozen or so 1911s already, but if I was looking for a stainless 1911 in that price range it would certainly be on my short list.

We had one in our 1911 Gunsite class. It was the only one to choke in a way that couldn't be fixed t the range and had to go to the gunsmith for a few hours. Turns out it was a firing pin spring with the wrong tension or something.

We also had a presentation by Ruger (they are also based in Prescott, at least for 1911 manufacture), and the understanding I got was that there were making them in small batches and fiddling, then running another batch. Product development appeared to still be happening even though the pistol was in production.

That is just my understanding, but I would probably wait another year before buying one. Yours might be great. Or not.

Nothing wrong with mine. Santa left one under my tree. Somehow my credit card got billed, though:D

Only problem is that I don't have mine yet.:banghead: I've had it on order for a few months now. The only other problem would be yours if I told you how much we're getting them for...:neener:

Under $600.00??????? Not around here, here they are running around $700.00 or higher! I would like to get my hands on one but not at these prices. Before I spend this much for the Ruger I would get a Springfield, Kimber or another S&W as a mate to my 1911 PD.

Yes, folks are claiming to get them under $600. Might not be 'the norm', but I've seen enough chatter to think there's truth. Certainly, the $625-$650 seems pretty common.

But that avoids the question! Why!?!

Wow... I got mine free  as part of a sales promotion by Ruger. I've got a drawer full of 1911's and haven't found anything wrong with the SR1911 at all. It runs fine, doesn't hang up, and looks better than most of the guns in the shop.:neener:

I've got Springfields, Paras, Rock Islands, and a few others in both A1 and A2 configurations. My SR looks better than most and for a "stock" gun, runs smooth as butter.

When I took my CWP class, one of the shooters had a brand new Kimber (high dollar one) and it locked up about every third shot. He was furious and finally ended up shooting the CWP course with my old Smith 4006. He was just back from Iraq, and very familiar with the guns, but it was a "no go" with the Kimber... so I guess any mechanical device can fail, and often does. So far, no issues with my SR1911.

What's wrong? It is a Ruger...........taking castings and making a quality gun tends to be something that does not always seem to work

I think Ruger have proven that they can do just that. Anyway, the slide is machined from bar stock, if I remember correctly, and only the frame is cast. If all these aluminum-alloy-framed 1911s are holding up, why shouldn't an investment cast stainless frame? To say nothing of all the custom 1911 builds based on Caspian frames, made by Pine Tree Castings, a division of Sturm, Ruger.

Mine shoots three inches high and a couple inches left.

Also the finish on the black parts suck.

Other than that, 8 people, including one lady, have shot the gun and all like it. Several say they are going to buy one when they can get it.

Mine was $699 and there is a line to buy them but there's none available.

The Rugers are awesome. It can't be compared to a Kimber but for the price you can't beat it. I'm in the market right now for a solid 1911 and the Ruger is right up there with my other choices of Remington and Springer. Plus, as someone already mentioned, their service has been excellent!

I've been on the waiting list for over six months so far...

What is an "A2 configuration" 1911?

Another happy SR1911 owner here...
I can not compare it to other 1911's as this is my first....:p
But, compared to my SIG P220 EQ, it's almost equal....
(The SIG is easier to clean...... )

Lateck,

Iam waiting for the recall . Ruger it seems likes to have recall on their newer models .
After recall all will be right and I will get in line.

You'll be waiting for ever for a recall on this model......

You better get in line NOW...
Ruger has this gun just right!

That happened twice, and hasn't happened in a few years. Considering the ridiculous amount of new stuff they've come out with in the past 5 years I'd say that things have gotten much better.

They had recalls on 2 (I believe) models and they have released alot of new guns lately.

But I hope more people think like you. Keep on waiting so I will have a better chance of getting one
