Deer season is almost over so I am getting the .22 ready for squirrels .

I tried 8 different brands of ammo . The best I could get at 50 yds. was .603 with Wolf , .691 Aguila , .751 Winchester Super X , and .770 CCI Mini Mags .

It wasn't the best day for target shooting, the wind was blowing kind of hard that day . I was just wondering what kind of groups y'all are getting out of your stock barrel 10-22's .

I have a Weaver 3x9 rimfire scope on mine and lightened the trigger pull to about 6 lbs.

.75" or so from a stock 10-22 is good. I also have a TC .22 Classic benchmark, not in the same league as a stock 10-22. It will shoot sub .5" groups at 50 yds easily and I have shot squirrels at 80+.

Not a 10-22, but with CCI Standard Vel my Marlin 60 in 5 groups of 5 averaged .7036", with 3 smaller than that (.5-.6) and the largest at 0.9". This is with a fixed 4X scope. I tested that ammo along with minimag round and hollow point, and winchester bulk, all of which were much worse. I won't even test any more High velocity rounds in that rifle.

Even though I can only shotgun hunt in New Jersey, and only just got a bolt action rifle (at Christmas) that hasn't been taken out in PA yet (Can't use the semi automatic Marlin 60 in PA!), I asked around and was told that group sizes like that are more than plenty good enough for squirrel hunting if that's what you want to do with this rifle which your post implies!

As a slight aside, glad to see that you can hunt with a 10-22 semi-auto in Virginia which I think you are also implying, means when I move there soon I will have numerous rifles available to choose from whether it feels like a peep sight Marlin 60 day or a scoped 22 bolt action kind of day : )

Standard Ruger 10/22 barrels are made for plinking. The target model has an excellent barrel, so I have been told, but the standard barrel has this huge chamber. I could insert a 22 LR and rock it in the chamber by pressing on the rim.

My standard Ruger barrel would group 1" to 1.25" at 50 yards. Once I replaced it with a Volquartsen, with match ammunition it will shoot close to 3/8" at 50 yards.

You were getting those groups with the wind blowing kinda hard? I would say you are ready for squirrel season.

Mine is good for .7"-1.25" (10 shot groups) at 50 yards with a 4X scope. CCI Blazer and Remington Golden Bullets.

Yeah, I am pretty sure there is no weapon limitation when hunting squirrels. You can hunt squirrels with any legal gun in Virginia, which is all of them which are legal nationally....well the Striker is illegal in Virgina but that might be illegal nationally as well.

There are a number of folks that can set back and rechamber a 10-22 barrel for better accuracy......

The 10-22 is a fun rifle to do DIY mods on.

For a lot of really good 10-22 or any rimfire go visit Rim Fire Central. I use the same handle over there.

Just thought I would mention it.

It's great to see a bunch of believable posts instead of wild claims of groups down in the tenths.....Mine never has shot better than about an inch at 50.

1" at 50 for mine as well. This is with ammo it likes - 1.5-2" for ammo it doesn't like. Plenty good for squirrels.

Those were the 4 best 3 shot groups . The other 4 were .881 Remington Game Load , .985 Eley Target , 1.442 Winchester Wild Cat , and the surprising one 2.486 Federal Match .

I was shooting off a Bulls Bag .

I missed a few last year . I though the zero was off a bit . After shooting I found out it was me . I made no adjustments too the scope .

We have 2 -10/22 that will shoot under 3/8" at 50yards with some better ammo. My kidd barreled rifle a bit better on a good day. Problem is there far from stock ! 1lb and 2lb trigger pulls, kidd and clark customs barrels and 4-16 and 6-24 scopes. Also a way cheaper savage mkII BV that can shoot as well too. But like a different affordable ammo.

My standard 10/22 with cci or federal match would stay around 0.8-1.0".
My 10/22T with factory hammer forged hb will stay around 0.5-0.7" with the same ammo.
IMO the 10/22T is bested by any standard 10/22 with decent aftermarket barrel and a trigger job.
It's pretty though.

10 shot groups

Looks like mine is shooting pretty normal . I was just wondering if y'all were shooting 1 hole groups at 50 yds. with your stock barrel 10/22's .

Thanks for all the honest replies .

20 rounds at 50 yards, using Eley Match, but it's not stock.

The same gun, same day, 10 rounds with CCI Minimag solids while checking to see how it does for hunting.

For comparison this is how it shot Eley before I did the mods on it, it's also 20 rounds but where the target tore while shooting you can't see all the holes.

Green Mountain 18" fluted barrel, Fajen adjustable stock, it wears a Weaver Grand Slam 6.5-20 scope now instead of the 8-32 shown in the pic, the targets shown were with the stock trigger but I have replaced that with a Volquartson now.

Target model 10/22 with a pretty decent trigger off of bags using Federal Automatch @ 50 yards... This was one of my best groups of that day, typically I'm a little worse than that... LOL

You shot that with Federal Auto Match? Here's my latest testing of Auto Match. Federal had me ship them the two boxes for their own testing and refunded me my purchase price plus$$. SK+ was shot as a control group to make sure the guns, 10/22T and CZ452 Varmint, weren't off. All 4 groups were 10 shots each.

CCI Mini-Mag, bone stock 1971 Ruger 10/22.

I may have shot better, but this is the best one I have recorded.

This one was actually better with a lot more lead. Again CCI Mini-Mag's, bone stock 1971 Ruger 10/22.

If you think groups in the tenths aren't possible even with a stock Ruger then you would be wrong. Some Rugers shoot very, very well right out of the box. Most are in the 3/4 inch range but there are some that can do better. And other rifles have no problem doing far better. I shot a sub .4" group at 90 yards with a stock Marlin 60SS. I certainly can't do that all the time or even often but it does happen. I can shoot quarter inch groups often with my my CZ 453 and my Savage MkIIBTV. The Savage is slightly modified (pillar bedded). I've shot 4 out of 5 with that Savage under .1". It just takes the right rifle, the right ammo for the rifle, and lots of practice.

I'm not saying these things to brag. Lots of people shoot better than I do. I'm just saying it for information purposes.

Here's a sample of a 5 shot, 50 yard group I shot with my CZ. It measured .108". I can't shoot this well every time but it's very common to shoot quarter inch groups. This one is under 1/8th inch.

That's been my experience also, although my Benchmark is an R55.
You can't expect tight groups at 50 yards from a stock 10/22.

There is a guy at the club with a 10/22 Target which I would like to try. I picked it up and it was every bit as pretty as my R55, if it can group the same as an R55 that would be something!

Just bought mine a few months ago. Glad to know it's not just me that can't get it under 1/2" at fifty. My bolt guns shoot groups less than half that.
