What's Your Favorite 1911 & Why?

I am suprised there isnt any mention of STI yet. I know some that swear by their $3000 1911 that works no better than my $329 38 super RIA with my add ons and trigger job. ha ha ha

I wonder why is it whenever a "1911" thread appears someone talks about how great Glocks are. It is a wonder folks like myself do not enjoy such discussions.
As far as Government Models go my favorite is Colt. They are hand built with quality materials.

Hunter:

You are correct.

For my part, I like the Colt Series 70 Reproduction. I have the stainless and the blued versions. :D Edit to add the "why" The Series 70 fits my hand like a latex glove. None of my others pistols are this comfortable. Others are very close, but they fall short.

I do know the reason, but I hate to change my pistols permanently. Some factors I cannot change out. Specifically, I like the arched main spring house, the standard grip safety, and the curve of the front strap under the trigger guard. My pistols that have bumped or beavertail grips safeties, flat main spring housing or high-cut front straps are not as comfortable to me.

The Series 70 reproduction comes with everything that I like.

Same reason some body asks about a lee load master and gets replies to buy a dillon

I am a somewhat new member here still but I am not new to internet firearm discussion boards. In my opinion when someone is looking for a specific answer to a question it is impolite to try to hijack the thread and turn it into a flame war.
Q "What are good options on a Government Model?"
A "There is no such thing buy a Glock."
I don't know about anyone else but I see that as rude and not at all helping. If I see a Glock option thread I do not go there to recommend a Colt Government Model. What good would that really do.
I remember someone once said "This is the internet so if you cannot say something nice say something anyway."

I agree Hunter. I just ignore those posts and only look at the "real" helpful answers. Those people just want attention and an excuse to post a pic of their non-1911 gun.

All my 1911's are Colts! :)
I do want to add a Custom 1911 to my 1911 family one of these days and I am seriously looking at an Ed Brown or Bill Wilson pistol. Presently I am enjoying my new toy, a 70 Series Colt Combat Commander that I purchased NIB back in 1975 and gave to my Uncle as a Christmas present that year. I moved out of state and did not see the pistol again until recently when he passed away. He had wrapped this pistol in an oil soaked sock and hid it in a closet, where it stayed for 30+ years. Along with the Colt was the box of shells I gave him back in 1975, less 35 rounds. (No, the box of shells was not in the oil soaked sock with the Colt) ;)

WOW! :D

I've got a few favorites................

But my favoritest is this one........

No, this one...........

Dang! I forgot about this one...........

No, wait a minute............

Dadgummit...............

:scrutiny:

I guess it all depends on why I have them. Some are carry guns. Others are target guns. Some are historical. Some are custom. Some I put my own sweat and blood into..........

Now that is a beautiful sight!!! Some people have fantasies of taking a bath in gold, others in rubies...mine...a room full of 1911s, floor to ceiling, and just me all alone. Oh...sorry. That was really embarrassing.

Just curious. . . . .

Since I seem to be the only person to even remotely mention Glock (because the ONLY photo that I have of my Gold Cup is with my G21) it seems that the above post is directed toward me.

I originally posted:
Lastly, here is a (not-so-great) photo of my beloved (old) Colt Gold Cup NM, along with my Glock G21.
I bought this Gold Cup in 1985. It's had tens of thousands of rounds through it, and it will STILL shoot the X-ring out of the target at 25 yds and 50 yds IF I do my part.
This is one pistol that will NEVER be sold.

Other than that, I must have missed somebody touting Glocks.

One of the first people on the first page said he tried a 1911 and it just didn't seem to strike him right so he went to a Glock and he said that's the pistol he'd probably live and die with. But, hopefully not because of.. hehehe I tried out a Glock once but decided I didn't like it because it felt really top heavy to me.

No, the "No Glocks" posts were toward him, not you. You were talking about your Glock AND your 1911, not just your Glock at the cost of all 1911's in general.

After poking around (I'm loving the pictures by the way!) I've seen the really really nice pistols like Ed Brown, Kimber, and Les Baer are generally between $1500 and $3000! Yikes! :what: But then again, wouldn't they fall into the general classification of "Precious Metals"? :)

I've noticed for the most part the most popular are the Colts. I was looking at the 1991 series and the special combat government series. My question is how much is a Colt pistol anyways? My local Gander Mountain is closed for the day and all I can find online is these stupid Airsoft pistols.

Edit: screwed up a sentance

Oh yeah, and I forgot to add that I like the short trigger of the Series 70 Reproduction.

Jaenak, the prices can vary but i strongly suggest you avoid gander mountain in regards to Colt's. Not sure about yours, but the one closest to me said that they could get me a 1991 for 1000.00, which is around 250 more than you can find it for online, or at a local dealer. Only today did I shoot my first Colt(s) (Doc's actually) and in this novice's opinion, they are definitely worth the price.

I just buy Colts I screwed up and got a New Kimber Eclipse. But Im giving it to my wife for xmas. I just can't warm up to it . It doesn't feel right in my hand like my Colts do. So she can have it. Least it will get shot, that way . Other wise will be a safe Queen. RIA feels better.

Thanks, Jaenak.

The Gold Cup NM in the photo was 'supposed' to be 'NEW' when I bought it, in 1985. I paid $500.00 cash for it.

I got home with it (after our required 7 day MINIMUM waiting period) and cleaned it and when I opened the factory manual, to fill out and send in the warranty papers. . . this pistol was USED!!!!!! (Warranty papers were already filled out and mailed, and the owner's name was in the book!)

Well. . . the barrel bushing was a tight fit (accurizer bushing) and the link was making a really tight fit (no vertical movement of the barrel in relation to the locking lugs), and virtually no rattle between slide and frame.
Plus, the trigger was like a thin piece of glass breaking. (Future test with scale would show 3-1/2 lb trigger!)

So. . . I decided to keep the pistol.

I did go back to the gunshop that I bought it from. (Note: I had done a LOT of business with this shop and knew the owner; his son; and most of the guys that worked there.)

I was curious as to why the owner's son told me that the pistol was NEW.
So, I talked with a couple of the guys working in the shop until all of the other customers left, then asked the owner's son why he sold the pistol as NEW, when it was USED.

He pulled the 'book' and discovered that his Mom had taken in two Gold Cups on the same day.
One was new, the other. . . used.
She had transposed serial numbers and they put the new GC in the 'used' case, and the used pistol in the 'new' case.

The owner's son offered to get me another GC (new) with no additional monies, but, I declined. (I really liked this pistol!)

So, he offered me some money back. Before I could say 'o.k.' or 'nah', he took $125.00 out of the cash register.

I told him that it wasn't necessary, but, $125 is $125.00!

He thanked me for 'not saying anything' while other customers were in the shop.
(I wouldn't have, no matter what.)

Before I left the gunshop, the owner's son shook my hand, told me that I had a Lifetime Warranty on the pistol, and handed me 5 boxes of Federal 230 gr. Match ammo.

Well, that gunshop closed down several years ago, so, the warranty 'died' when the shop closed, but, I've never needed anything done to this pistol other than having the rear sight pin replaced.
The roll pin was replaced with a cold rolled pin that is a perfect fit.

No sir byf43 I was not referring to you sir but a post before yours. I hope I did not offend you.

No offense taken. No harm. No foul.

I thought that I had read every post, and the only mention of the "G" word, was in my post.
I didn't see the 'other' post.

I suppose I need to get new glasses. (Or new eyeballs.) :what:

XavierBreath that is a great picture and inspired me.
Here is a picture of most of mine all of which are Colts.
2006_12020002.jpg
I do have another on the way.

The first 1911 I ever shot was a Wilson Combat. I was ruined very early. After that, I shot both a Para-ord, and S&W. They both felt really nice, but not quite the same. I shot a SA Loaded, which was nice, and I could have had it for a SONG (about $600 with about 1500 rounds through it and very nicely maintained with box, tools, papers, etc...) but didn't bite. I can't afford to shoot .45ACP yet. Besides, I still fantasize about that Wilson. Some day when I finish law school and get a good paying job, and can afford it, i'll get myself a Wilson combat. But until I can afford the Wilson, I won't get anything else.

After poking around (I'm loving the pictures by the way!) I've seen the really really nice pistols like Ed Brown, Kimber, and Les Baer are generally between $1500 and $3000! Yikes!

The first four Kimbers I owned cost well under $3000 for all four. One was under $600, the rest were all at or under $750 each.

I almost bought a Wilson about a year ago for $975 on this board (I hesitated a bit and someone else jumped on it). :fire:

There are good buys out there; keep looking and don't be afraid to jump.

Hunter,

Nice photo. Are you going to write a review online for this new Colt coming in?

A buddy has a Caspian frame & slide set up perfectly (IMO) and it just fits & shoots like it was made for just me...to bad he refuses to part with it

AJD the "new" Colt coming in is not a new Colt but one I have found hard to come by. This pistol is no longer manufactured new so I doubt if a review will be requested but at the very least there will be pictures and commentary.
I do appreciate you asking though.

Ya know, now that I took a closer look at the Kimbers, I can see they are reasonable. Almost all of their guns are between $1000 & $1250 and the extra $250 to $500 would be spent (and then some) at a gun smith for any other pistol trying to do the things that Kimber does standard.

Anyone know of any websites that sell custom 1911 parts? What I mean by custom is parts the manufacturer doesn't sell for their own pistols.
