Make mine a bit more modern - even if it was canned over eight years ago!
Well, the 296 is a bit of a bounce with those 200gr Gold Dot .44 Specials... maybe a better choice is my more recently made 4" 64-8:
Yeah, a SS version of a 10 (I have only a 2" 10!) just cannot be beat. Great plinker - easy to clean - hits perfect, windage-wise, with everything - just guesstimate the elevation for the range. Super plinker - or, as it normally is, loaded with +P 158gr LHPSWCs for HD duties. Yeah, it would be my choice. The 296 has the odd duck pegged.
Every fixed-sight Kframe I've every handled or fired has been just fantastic. Of course, I like my Detective Special a lot, too. Like shooting the Kframe, though. Love that trigger. Thinking of trading off the DS for another S&W.
At the moment, it would be my 4" Smith model 65-1. Second would be my 10-5 nickel tapered barrel. But if I had that 58 that huntershooter posted, that would for sure be my favorite.
Currently my Model 10 with 6" barrel. But I'm hoping to sell/trade it fairly soon for something with a non tapered barrel and a top ridge that will allow me to have it be cut down to 4.2 to 4.25 so it's legal for me to own up here and yet makes it short enough to use more effectively in the revolver classes of my IDPA and IPSC shooting matches. But it's gotta be a K frame so I can share my speed loaders with my 19.
Nothing tops the 1968 model 10 I inherited from my grandfather. This was the first weapon I ever shot as a kid.
A close second is my Thunder Ranch model 22 what an awesome shooter. This has now replace my model 65 as my home defense pistol. I wrote a range review here http://www.dayattherange.com/?p=1194
Nice site and review.
I've been leery of the new era Smiths, but I sure would like to have a retro fixed sight gun in .44 special as a companion to my 624, something along the lines of your model 22.
