What is Your Favorite Colt (and why?)

I've gained some new appreciation for the Troopers and the Officers' Models after acquainting myself with a friend's collection. Makes me wish I'd picked some up at the gun shows when you could get really nice specimens at excellent prices (but I was too focused on old S&W revolvers and 1911s for a long time -- just recently diversifying my collection, who knows? -- I might actually buy a Ruger revolver one of these days).

I have had plenty of Colt revolvers in the past but none currently. My favorite of them all (this includes two Troopers Mk.V, Detective Special, Agent, Viper, and a couple of New Frontier .22s), was my first one, a Trooper Mk.III.

A beautiful blued finish, good heft and balance, a decent DA/SA trigger, and great overall fit and finish this gun was
my favorite for many years.

My favorite Colt is the First Generation Single Action Army. At one point in my life I owned six of them. Stuff happens and I sold them to finance starting my own business. If I had them back they would be worth a small fortune. Oh well, life happens.

Thats like asking me to pick my favorite Ford...

Ive got two automatics and four woodsmen we wont discuss. Two diamondback 22s, 4 and 6", a police positive special in 32 CNP, police something or other target 22, 1917 Army 45, New Service 38-40, 6" nickel Python, and a Shooting Master 38.

Lets be honest, the Shooting Master is the finest revolver Colt ever produced, and rare enough that relatively few people have seen one compared to say, the python. Mine however, looks like it served in every conflict since 1929.

I can narrow it down to two. The 38-40 New Service from 1923 is my favorite to shoot targets with but i tend to carry the beat up ol 1917 (from 1919) Army when in the woods. The 38-40 is such a soft yet big bore shooter. The 1917 Army has history, and i enjoy adding some of my own sweat and oil into the dark stained original walnut grips. And it is deadly accurate...

The pair of them:

I "had" (miss it dearly) a 4" stainless python. Really liked it so sent it off to Florida to have a roller action conversion done and got it back and installed a Bullseye spring kit in it. Then, sent if off to Jim Stroh for some metal work including a bit wider rounded combat trigger. If I recall the double action was down around 6lbs on a mechanical trigger gauge I have. For whatever reason parted with it to a friend. Sometime later we were out shooting and he let me send a few rounds down range for old times sake. After looking at the target really, really missed it.

I like it because when people dry fire it I get to see their whole eyeball, wide open.

You cannot believe how good this trigger is. Colt Officers Model 38 Target Heavy Barrel. Made in 1937. This is back when Colt couldn’t be bested. Oh, how times change.

Very true!

Mine is also from the 1930’s. It had an action job and a rear sight & trigger shoe installed by King before they closed (1940’s).

I bought it in April, 2020 near the beginning of the unrest idiocy and gun buying panic. Still paid 550 OTD even then.

It shoots very well, much better than I can. Due to its age and difficulty to repair, I keep it strictly to 2.9 gr Bullseye/148 gr WC loads.

Stay safe.

Well, I just found a Colt revolver, on the website of a local FFL, and jumped on it, with a credit card. It is not a Second-Generation SAA, which was the goal stated in my earlier reply, but in its own way, better, and certainly far less common, a snub-gun version of a Colt Official Police, with the happy addition of a factory letter, showing delivery to a prominent dealer.

This will be my real-world Fitz Special, as my hands are not large enough to benefit from a cut-away trigger guard, but are large enough to benefit from a full-sized fightin’ grip. Life is good.

Stainless Delta Elite, circa 1988. I had the folks at Fords refinish and re-engrave the delta roll mark on the slide last year. Looks brand new.
I've has a few upgrades done to it over the years. Reliable and accurate shooter. No problem with chamber support BTW.

Colt Model 357, 6". It's my favorite because it was my father's. It's the only Colt I currently own. Used to have a Gov't Model 30 years ago and sold it. Wish I still had it, but the Model 357 is silky smooth, and way more accurate than me. Don't shoot it as much as I would like because I am trying to keep it around and parts are scarce. Still, when I take it out, it reminds me of my dad. It's the first firearm I ever "shot" (well, dad was holding on to it with me), when I was 6. I know he had a mouse fart load in it, but I remember that day. He took this thing hunting all over CA and SC. It's a connection to him and I will never let this go.

My favorite Colt is the new 3" King Cobra that I just ordered.

Why? It's the only Colt I own. Technically own, that is -- they have my money already. Can't wait for it to come in. 5-10 business days, they said.

I always wanted one of the originals back in the 90's, but never ponied up to buy one.

Hopefully you'll get one as superb as mine -- the trigger on mine is, hands-down, the best trigger I've ever had on a stock production revolver.

Speaking of Colt's from the 1930s -- I absolutely love this one from 1933 (not my favorite Colt, but its cool factor is off the charts). It's possible I'm a bit of a Colt fan.

Colt made so many fine handguns it would be hard to choose just one. Possibilities could be a 60+ year old Match Target, an all original 1911 made around 1917, a 2nd generation SAA with a real early SN, a Python or a Gold Cup.

I'm not really good at these questions. I like all of my guns. I have a few Pythons and like the 4" maybe a little over the 6". I can never really say I have a "favorite".

The ugly grips were replaced with the originals.

I also have a nice little Detective Special I am fond of.

I just very much enjoy shooting this little gun.

Then I have a somewhat rough but very good shooting US Government 1911 manufactured in 1914 pre dating WWI.

The grips are now correct and I need a correct backstrap with lanyard ring. It does shoot well though.

For years I have had a long running love affair with 1911 Colt Series 70 guns.

One of the above is 38 super and I would like a 9mm Series 70.

I would really like a .45 Colt in a good revolver. Have a Ruger Redhawk but would like a good revolver.

That concludes handguns. I have several AR15 flavors of Colt to include a few Colt SP1 rifles. I trained with a M14 but when I got to Vietnam it was an M16 and 1911A1.
The first 3 from left are Colt guns. The first two are Colt SP1 with the triangular handguards.

Asking me for a favorite Colt my answer varies by any given day. I simply like and enjoy shooting all of the colt guns I have.

My favorite Colt would be one of my 1903s but my favorite Colt revolver is a 1919 Colt Army Special.

Love the hand checkering on the cylinder release on these old ones.

Very hard to pick a favorite, but I like this one, a prewary OMM .22. You can't beat the quality of these pre-war revolvers. It is as accurate as my Korth .22, maybe just 004.JPG not as ergonomic.

Heh. I have a good 45 Colt revolver (Blackhawk), but would like a good double-action one. I'm hoping that Colt will come out with a 45 version of the new Anaconda. That'd be sweet.

Only one Colt revo, an older Dick Special with the naked ejector rod; always a fan of Highway Patrol, and Broad Crawford had one. Actually had a toy one back then, for the same reason.
