Bart, that was a line from Marty Robbins" "Mr. Shorty."

The little man's hand was like lightnin'
The bad forty four was the same
The forty four spoke, sent lead and smoke
Seventeen inches of flame

The big one had never cleared leather,
Beaten before he could start
A little round hole had appeared on his shirt
The bullet went clear through his heart

Most gun songs are actually anti-gun. The Beatles were anti-gun, Aerosmith has had anti-gun opinions.

Saturday Night Special is an especially anti-gun song. "Handguns are made for killing, they ain't no good for nuthin else."

There are very very few songs with guns in them that are pro gun, so I can't claim to have a favorite.

Another One Bites the Dust

Here's one by Queen:

Steve walks warily down the street,
With the brim pulled way down low
Aint no sound but the sound of his feet,
Machine guns ready to go
Are you ready, are you ready for this
Are you hanging on the edge of your seat
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
To the sound of the beat

Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
And another one gone, and another one gone
Another one bites the dust
Hey, Im gonna get you too
Another one bites the dust

How do you think Im going to get along,
Without you, when youre gone
You took me for everything that I had,
And kicked me out on my own

Are you happy, are you satisfied
How long can you stand the heat
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
To the sound of the beat

Chorus

Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
There are plenty of ways you can hurt a man
And bring him to the ground
You can beat him
You can cheat him
You can treat him bad and leave him
When hes down
But Im ready, yes Im ready for you
Im standing on my own two feet
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
Repeating the sound of the beat

Loaded Gun by Rev Horton Heat.

shes a runaway Bo Deans

You know Mary was a woman fine
She was living with a hard guy
Mary got beat up
One too many times

She's a runaway
Run, run, runaway

Mary stole some money
And she got herself a gun
Then she shot her man down
Now she's on the run

Chorus

And she ain't looking back anymore
She says, "Catch me if you can, Lord"

You know she didn't want to do it
But he just jpushed her too far
Everybody's got a breaking point
And baby, there you are

Chorus

And she ain't looking back anymore
She says, "Catch me if you can, Lord"

Well that's the story
Of Mary and the gun
She's a lot tougher now
She's living on the run

Chorus

Chorus

Although not a handgun song (neither is "Another One Bites the Dust" for that matter), here's one of notariety.

"Praise the Lord, and Pass the Ammunition"

Down went the gunner, a bullet was his fate
Down went the gunner, then the gunners mate
Up jumped the sky pilot, gave the boys a look
And manned the gun himself as he laid aside The Book, shouting
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition and we'll all stay free!

Praise the Lord and swing into position!
Can't afford to sit around and wishin'
Praise the Lord we're all between perdition
and the deep blue sea!

Yes the sky pilot said it
You've got to give him credit
for a son - of - gun - of - a - gunner was he,
Shouting;
Praise the Lord we're on a mighty mission!
All aboard, we're not a - goin' fishin;
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition and we'll all stay free!

The Ballad of Billy the Kid

Sung by Michael Martin Murphy

'Way out in New Mexico long years ago,
when a man's only protection was a big .44'

17 inches of flame

Bart, Warwagon is right. Here's the quote:

But the little man's hand was like lightning
The Bad Forty-Four was the same
The Forty-Four spoke and it sent lead and smoke Seventeen inches of flame.

Hank Jr.'s "I've Got Rights".

"I went down to the Mary Carter Paint Store
I said 'Gimme one of them Smith and Wesson Magnum .44s"

Hank Jr.'s "The Coalition to Ban Coalitions"

"They wanna get rid of my .44s and all the R rated films
If they only knew how much we'd all love to get rid of THEM."

Motor City Madman

Not a huntin' song(well kinda is) but it's what I play on my way to the field.

Ted Nugent: "Strangle Hold":banghead:

Hank Jr.'s "I've Got Rights"

Ahhh, so I am not the only one who remembers that one. :D I actually heard it on the radio (KVST, Conroe, TX)...it was the first time I'd ever heard that one, and it made the hair stand up on the back of my neck.
As for "Saturday Night Special," well, all I can do when I hear that one is :barf: ...even though I love Skynyrd, I just think now, every time I hear that song, "ahhh, the theme song for Sarah Brady and her evil minions..."

Several songs which fit the specs

- - But many have been mentioned which do NOT refer to Handguns.

I like "The Pistol" as performed by Jim Wilson, mentioned above.

Several done by Robert Earl Keene - -
"Ballad of Tom Ames,": Trapped in an alley in Abilene, with all but four shells spent . . . . He cocked both his pistols and spit in the dirt, and stepped out into the street.

"The Road Goes On Forever": Sonny met the Cubans at a place out on the route
With a briefcase full of money and a pistol in his boot.

Warren Zevon - - -
"I'll Sleep When I'm Dead": I got a .38 Special upon the shelf . . .

Bunch more, but I'm getting sleepy.

Elton John (yes, Elton John!)

My Father's Gun
Music by Elton John
Lyrics by Bernie Taupin

From this day on I own my father's gun
We dug his shallow grave beneath the sun
I laid his broken body down below the southern land
It wouldn't do to bury him where any Yankee stands

I'll take my horse and I'll ride the northern plain
To wear the colour of the greys and join the fight again
I'll not rest until I know the cause is fought and won
From this day on until I die I'll wear my father's gun

I'd like to know where the riverboat sails tonight
To New Orleans well that's just fine alright
`Cause there's fighting there and the company needs men
So slip us a rope and sail on round the bend

As soon as this is over we'll go home
To plant the seeds of justice in our bones
To watch the children growing and see the women sewing
There'll be laughter when the bells of freedom ring

Poncho and Lefty by Willie Nelson

Beer for my Horses by Willie and Toby Keith

The Thunder Rolls by Garth Brooks

"She runs back down the hallway
Through the bedroom door
She reaches for the pistol
Kept in the dresser drawer.
She tells the lady in the mirror
He won't do this again.
Tonight will be the last time
She'll wonder where he's been.

Two old classics - -

"Stagger Lee"
. . . he toted a stack-barrel blow gun*
And a steel blue forty-fo'

*One name for the Remington over/under .41 derringer.

"Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown"
. . . He got a thirty-two gun in his pocket for fun
And a razor in his shoe.

And a couple of newer ones - -

"Lilly, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts,"
sung by Joan Baez
No one knew the circumstance but it happened pretty quick
The door to the dressing room swung open
And a Colt revolver clicked . . .

"Jesse With The Long Hair", performed by Robert Earl Keen
Jesse took a powder, slicked his long hair back
put a cartridge in his gun and stepped outside his shack . . .

Mr. Brown was all alone when Luann came walking in.
She pulled a pistol from her purse and pointed it at him.
When the door blew open she turned to look around
It was Jesse with the long hair hangin' down.

Mr. Brown grabbed Luann's gun and held it to her head.
"I'll blow her to Kingdom Come" is what the banker said.
In that fateful moment Jesse stood his ground.
Jesse with the long hair hangin' down . . . .
The bullet that killed Mr. Brown came through the windowpane.
It put a hole above one eye and lodged down in his brain.
He never saw a puff of smoke, no flash, no fire, no sound.
From Jesse with the long hair hangin' down.

Best

Elton John!!!

Y'know, the mention of Elton John brought back a memory- the was a song called "Tickin'" , I think it was from his Cherokee album. You can't find it now..he has mentioned he's sorry he wrote it. It's the story of a boy who goes crazy and shoots 14 people, then is shot by the police...
Actually, it's a beautiful piece of music.

I can't believe all the votes for "Saturday Night Special" by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

yeah, its great music, but still... a song about guns being good for nothing, and telling you to throw 'em all to the bottom of the sea...

I would think that it would rate as a "least favorite gun song...".
